On November 8, a large new airship called Pathfinder 1 made its first test flights (飞行) in California. The airship was built by LTA Research, a company that’s hoping to make an old method of transportation new again.
The new airship is at 400 feet long, it’s far longer than a football field. It’s the largest airship of its kind since the 1930s. But the Pathfinder 1 is built using many new ideas, and new materials.
Unlike planes, airships fly because they are full of gas that is lighter than air. Airships were especially popular in the early 1900s. They were used for transportation, for spying, and were even used in war. But most of that ended in 1937, after an airship called the Hindenburg caught fire and burned as it was landing. Hydrogen gas, which does burn, was responsible for this accident. The accident scared people away from airships. By that time, planes were improving quickly. From then on, most air travel focused on (关注于) airplanes.
Now, a company called LTA (Lighter Than Air) Research is hoping to change that. The money for LTA comes from Sergey Brin, one of the two people who started Google. He hired (聘用) Alan Weston to run LTA. Both men have always liked airships. And they believe airships can be used to move people and materials quickly and without polluting.
From the outside, Pathfinder 1 looks similar to the airships of the 1930s. But Pathfinder 1 is completely new. For one thing, the ship gets its lift from Helium—a gas that does not burn. The Pathfinder 1 has 12 electric motors (电动机). The motors make it possible for the airship to take off and land without a runway. The Pathfinder 1 can fly at speeds of up to 75 mph.
Pathfinder 1 can carry about 4 tons of people and things. LTA hopes to show that airships can provide a low-pollution way to move cargo (货物) over a long way. Mr. Brin is especially interested in using airships to help people out in emergency situations, such as after an earthquake or a hurricane, when roads are closed and there’s no place for planes to land.
38. What’s the theme of the passage?
A. Culture. B. Biology. C. Environment. D. Science.
39. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. LTA and Sergey Brin. B. Two men from Google.
C. Sergey and Alan Weston. D. Alan Weston and Google.
40. Why did the airships become less popular than planes after 1937?
A. The materials to build the airships were not easy to find.
B. A terrible accident was caused by an airship called the Hindenburg.
C. The airships in the early 1900s were smaller and lighter than planes.
D. No companies would spend money and energy improving the airships.
41. What advantages of Pathfinder 1 may have among the airships according to the passage? Choose the right answer.
①Being safer ②Carrying more things ③Being smarter
④Being cheaper ⑤Landing more easily
A. ①②⑤ B. ①③⑤ C. ②③④ D. ②③⑤
42. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Many people always like airships and hope to bring airships back.
B. It’s possible to use airships in emergency situations instead of planes.
C. The Pathfinder 1 has the same looks and motors as the airships in the 1900s.
D. The Pathfinder 1 has been put into use in many fields because of less pollution.
C
Do you love to live in a big house or a small one? “Tiny homes”—houses that are around 40 or fewer square meters—have become more popular in recent years, with 53% of Americans saying they would consider buying one. Tiny homes are found all over the world, but they’re the most popular in the US, where there are over 10,000.
Pre-built (预先建好的) tiny houses are available, though many people choose to build their own. Inside, they often look like regular houses, but much smaller. There might be a small open kitchen and a living area, a bathroom and a bed that can be reached by a ladder (梯子). Most houses are built on trailers, making it easy for people to change the location. And this kind of tiny house is very popular in the US.
One big advantage of a tiny house is cost. According to a study, in 2018 the average cost of an 8.5-meter-long tiny home was$65,000, while a normal home in the US cost an average of $272, 000. Some people also like tiny homes because they are good for the environment. They need less energy to heat, and they often use sun’s energy, or are built using green and local materials. Some people choose to live in a tiny house because they want a smaller home after they retire (退休) or because they’re trying to cut down their cost of living. For many, though, they just can’t afford anything bigger.
Carwyn Lloyd Jones, who teaches a course on building tiny homes in the UK, thought that these types of houses seem to become popular to young people. “It’s because they want to have that space to live in, but they are not necessarily able to afford the land to build a full-size house,” he said.
43. In what way does the writer tell us how popular tiny houses are in recent years?
A. By using numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By writing about his own experiences. D. By comparing the different types of houses.
44. What can’t be found in a tiny house?
A. A bed. B. A kitchen. C. A bathroom. D. A swimming pool.
45. What does the underlined word “trailers” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Countries. B. Floors. C. Rooms. D. Trucks.
46. What’s the advantage of a tiny house?
A. It costs too much money. B. People usually sell it after they retire.
C. It is harmful to the environment. D. Some people are able to afford to build it.
47. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. How do Americans Protect the Environment? B. Why do People Choose to Live in Tiny Homes?
C. How do People Save Money to Build a House? D. What will Young People’s Life Be Like in the US?
D
Reading is more than just a fun activity—it can actually change the way your brain works. Studies show that reading can improve your brain’s health, make you feel better, and even help you focus. Let’s take a look at how reading can have a good influence on your brain.
Your brain works hard when you read. It has to understand the words, think about their meaning, and imagine the story. This helps your brain get stronger and improves skills like memory, problem-solving, and thinking. Scientists believe that reading regularly is helpful, because it can protect your brain from getting weaker as you grow older, keeping it sharp for a long time.
Reading can help you feel less stressed. In one study, it was found that reading can reduce (减轻) stress by up to 68%. When you read a book, you focus on the story, which helps take your mind off your worries. This is similar to how activities like listening to music or doing yoga can make you feel relaxed.
Reading stories can help you understand how other people feel. When you read about characters in different situations, your brain learns to feel what they are feeling. This makes you more understanding—able to understand other people’s feelings. Studies show that people who read stories are better at connecting with others and understanding their feelings.
When you read, your brain produces chemicals (化学物质) that make you feel good. For example, dopamine (多巴胺) is produced when something exciting happens in the story. Serotonin and oxytocin helps improve your mood (情绪) . These chemicals make you feel happy and relaxed.
Reading is not only enjoyable——it is also good for your brain and mood. It can make your brain stronger, reduce stress, and even help you understand others better. So next time you read, remember: you are changing your brain chemistry for the better!
48. What does the underlined word “sharp” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Busy. B. Slow. C. Active. D. Silent.
49. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Reading allows people to focus better. B. Reading can help reduce people’s stress.
C. Reading is more popular than doing yoga. D. Reading makes people remember their problems.
50. When does your brain produce dopamine?
A. When you finish a difficult book. B. When you feel stressed and need to relax.
C. When you read something exciting in a story. D. When you try to understand people’s feelings.
51. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To compare reading with other relaxing activities.
B. To show the history of brain research about reading.
C. To encourage students to read more books for exams.
D. To explain how reading improves the brain and mood.
52. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Reading Changes Your Brain. B. How to Choose a Good Book.
C. Reading: A Fun Way to Relax. D. The History of Human Reading.

【答案】例文
The story between Chen Wenjun and the villagers deeply touches me. It shows how kindness can create a cycle of love and support. When Chen needed help, the villagers selflessly offered it, and later he repaid them by helping them become wealthy. This teaches us that helping others is not only a virtue but also a way to build a better society.
I once experienced similar warmth. Last year, I fell off my bike on my way to school. A stranger stopped, helped me up, and even bandaged my knee. Though I never saw him again, his kindness stayed with me. Later, I volunteered to tutor a classmate who struggled with math. Seeing her improve made me realize how small acts can change lives.
From these experiences, I learned that helping others brings joy to both sides. In the future, I will continue to spread kindness, whether by supporting friends or helping strangers.
