When I was a little boy, something sad happened to me and I never put any animals in a cage . The story is like this. I lived near the forest. Every evening the mockingbird (知更鸟) would sing around me. I loved the bird very much. I decided to catch a young one and keep it in a cage. In this way, I would have my own musician. Then I succeeded in catching one.
At first, the bird was afraid, so it fluttered (扑腾) in the cage. But finally, it lived in the cage quietly. I felt very excited and looked forward to some beautiful singing.
On the second day, the little bird’s mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth. I was pleased to see the baby bird eat everything. However, on the third day, when I went to the cage, I found my bird dead. I didn’t know why.
Later, a friend of my father’s visited my home. After he knew my story, he explained to me, “A mother mockingbird, finding her baby in a cage, will bring it poison berries (毒果). She thinks it is better for her baby to die than to lose freedom.” I was shocked (惊) about his words; I never caught any living animals from then on.

How do you greet your friends? People from different cultures have different answers: shaking hands, nodding, bowing (鞠躬), and kissing on the face. But do you know how animals “say hello” to each other? Here are some examples.
Everyone knows how similar chimpanzees (黑猩猩) are to humans. So the most usual ways of greeting between chimpanzees are handshaking and hugging (拥抱). Sometimes they also kiss each other. Some chimpanzees can even learn easy sign language.
Giraffes hardly ever make loud sounds. Their necks can grow to two meters. When two giraffes meet, they may “shake” their necks and rub (摩擦) them against each other. This is to feel how strong and tall the other is.
Dolphins greet one another with whistles (哨声). They can hear other dolphins from many kilometers away. Every dolphin has a different whistle. When two groups of dolphins meet, they each choose a member to “talk” to the other group. Then they can travel together. Unlike most of the other animals, dolphins are ________ enough to learn a new language by making and copying new sounds.

In Thailand there are many elephants and they are very important. The elephant is one of Thailand’s symbols. Their first flag had a white elephant on it. This is a symbol of good luck. In 1916, the king of Thailand changed it.
Elephants are very useful animals. They can carry heavy things so they often help do a lot of difficult work for people. And they are very smart, too. They can play soccer or music. They can also draw very well. People say that “an elephant never forgets”. Elephants can walk for a long time and never get lost. They can also remember places with food and water. This helps them to live.
But later, elephants were once in great danger. People cut down many trees so elephants lost their homes. People also killed elephants for their ivory (象牙). As a result, the number of the elephants fell to 3,000 (over 100,000 before).
Luckily, people in Thailand have realized (意识到) the problem. They begin to save the elephants. They try to save the trees and not to buy things made of ivory.
