the Middle East started to use it as a drink. Also, the physicians in the Turkish city of
Constantinople believed coffee was healthy and approved its use as a medicine. At the time,
instead of drinking coffee at home, people went to coffee houses to drink it.These people,
usually men, would meet to drink coffee and chat about issues of the day.In 1623,the ruler
of Constantinople thought it was dangerous for people to share ideas and opinions,so he
demanded to close all the coffee houses.

第二节
参考范文:
And then something amazing happened. One rainy morning,my daughter burst
through the back door, her face flushed with excitement."Daddy!Come look! The garden is
full of green shoots!"I followed her outside.Green shoots emerged from the soil in every part
of the garden. My daughter knelt down, touching one tenderly."Grandma planted these,
didn't she?"she whispered.I nodded,unable to speak,as tears mingled with raindrops on my
cheeks. My mother had been planting her parting gift on that cold winter day, knowing she
wouldn't be there to see it bloom. In the days that followed,we attended to them carefully,
hoping they would grow well.
With our attentive care, the green shoots (revealed themselves. The first golden
blossoms appeared on a warm morning-daffodils,my mother's favorite flowers,nodding
their cheerful heads in the sunlight.Soon the entire garden transformed into a sea of yellow
and white, their bold, irresistible fragrance spilling from our house, our lawn and our garden,
over the fence into the surrounding neighborhood. And then,I remembered my mother's
words,"I left you something. You'll know when you see it."She had planted them in the
winter, knowing well that they would bloom in the spring. When she was gone, there was a
final gift and love for her children and grandchildren.

My best friend and I were headed to Italy for travelling. When we started packing for the
trip the week before, she said,"We are told to only take our smallest suitcase, and we have to
use it for ten days. So,think small."I'd never packed this light for a trip before, and I'd been
big on fashion and I loved clothes.I would have to learn to re-wear clothing for the ten days
we were there. It would be a challenge.
I looked at my wardrobe (stuffed with so many items. How had I accumulated so
much clothing that I didn't even wear?I picked out basic pieces,finding tops,shorts,pants,
and skirts that I could mix and match for the warm June weather we would be enjoying. To
my utter disbelief, they all stowed away in my suitcase with my toiletries(洗漱用品).I
wondered why I needed all the rest of my stuff.I decided I'd think about that after the trip.
Off we went, and as we sipped delicious drinks on rooftop restaurants in Italy,we talked
about our suitcase packing.Even though we chose far fewer clothing items than we were used
to,we were having the best time.It was like taking a worry off our backs by not having to
think about what to wear every day.Was this just travel happiness that wouldn't last as soon
as I got home?Could I live this minimally at home and be happy with it once the vacation was
over?
As soon as I got home,I began eliminating non-necessities from my wardrobe.
Afterward, getting ready for the day was no longer a chore.I lived for relationships and
experiences rather than things, and I'd never been happier.

With their bright green eyes and slim bodies, gulper sharks are odd-looking,prehistoric
creatures that used to be found worldwide in waters from 200 to 1,500 meters deep. But now,
they face a crisis.Three quarters of the species are threatened with extinction, targeted for
their liver oil, which is particularly rich in a chemical compound known as squalene(角s鲨烯),
commonly used in beauty products for its antioxidant and moisturizing (properties.
New international trade protections, announced at the 20th conference of parties to the
Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES),
could turn the fate of these deepwater sharks around.Gulper sharks have been listed on
封
CITES Appendix II,which regulates trade of the species across international borders and
improves monitoring, while endangered whale sharks are among those that have been uplisted
to CITES Appendix I,which bans all commercial trade of the species and their products.
According to a 2024 study, nearly two-thirds of threatened deepwater sharks have been
used in liver oil products.Gulper sharks are particularly prized because their liver oil contains
over 70%squalene,the highest percentage of any shark family. As a result, populations of
gulper sharks have dropped by more than 80%in some regions. This could be disastrous for
gulper sharks, which mature late in life and have slow reproductive rates.Once their
populations decline,it can take years for them to recover.By one scientific estimate, the
线
dumb gulper shark is a species that has been severely overfished in Australia, and would take
86 years to recover just 25%of its original population size.
Before today, despite there being more than 100 sharks and rays listed in CITES
Appendix I and Appendix II,few were deep-water species.Luke Warwick,director of
shark and ray conservation at the Wildlife Conservation Society, said,"Sharks are the second
most endangered group of species on the planet, and many are running out of time...The
latest decision could not have been more urgent."
28.What has caused the sharp decline in gulper shark populations?
A.Their prehistoric appearance.
B.Their slow reproductive ability.
C.The loss of deep-sea habitats.
D.The rising demand for squalene.
【高三英语第5页(共10页)】
29.What do we know about the new CITES decision?
A.Gulper sharks face tighter control over international trade.
B.International trade in gulper sharks is completely banned.
C.Gulper sharks'liver oil can no longer be used in products.
D.Gulper sharks are better protected within national borders.
30.Why are the dumb gulper shark in Australia mentioned?
A.To prove the achievement of protecting gulper sharks.
B.To show it's hard to rebuild gulper shark populations.
C.To explain why gulper sharks have high squalene content.
D.To present the similar situation of other deepwater sharks.
31.What is Luke Warwick's attitude towards the new CITES decision?
A.Critical.
B.Doubtful.
C.Supportive.
D.Dismissive.

There comes a point in many a parent's life when their sweet child begins to fire back
with cutting remarks and sarcastic (behaviour that's enough to make parents want to
go into hiding for the foreseeable future.
Why are teens mean sometimes?According to Counselling Directory member Ana
Hristov, teens still lack emotional control, and the part of the brain that deals with reasoning
and planning is still developing. That can result in poor filtering (and general directness
that may come across as rude, touchy and sometimes even mean.On top of all, their nervous
system is maturing, meaning teens can experience a heightened sensitivity to stress, which
can make them overreact to the situations, with small stimuli leading to big reactions.
Another factor for the big change around this time has to do with the normal process of
slowly distancing from family in favour of peers(同龄人),where they go through great
efforts to fit in and avoid being perceived by their peers negatively.Social media and study
pressure add an extra layer of complexity to the mix.
It's OK to let this kind of behaviour slide occasionally for the sake of not getting into a
constant cycle of negative interactions. But Hristov cautioned that if the rude behaviour is
directed at siblings(兄弟姐s妹),for instance, parents need to pull up on it immediately as
your other children need a visible demonstration of you taking a firm stand, and it must be
made clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated in your home.
However, immediate punishment can sometimes escalate the situation further.
Similarly, responses rooted in further shaming or sarcasm will increase defensiveness rather
than encourage reflection.Hristov's advice for parents in this position is to respond, rather
than react.Try to remain calm, reflecting on what might be underneath the comment.Revisit
the conversation when everything's calm.Lastly, parenting teens is hard work so it's vital
that you take time out to recharge your batteries.
【高三英语第6页(共10页)】
32.What does Ana Hristov say about teenagers'rude behaviour?
A.It results from their immature brain.
B.It is mainly affected by social media.
C.It is a reminder of improper parenting.
D.It reflects their desire for independence.
33.What can be inferred about teens'distancing from family?
A.It potentially brings about study pressure.
B.It leads to long-term family breakdown.
C.It results from negative peer judgement.
D.It is a natural part of their development.
34.What is Ana Hristov's view about teenagers being mean to their siblings?
A.They may be trying to fit in with their peers.
B.They will eventually grow out of it naturally.
C.They require parents'immediate intervention.
D.They want to demonstrate their firm stand.
35.What is Ana Hristov's advice about parenting teenagers?
A.It ought to be strictly disciplined.
B.It requires empathy and self-care.
C.It involves always maintaining distance.
D.It demands constant negative interactions.

As a university lecturer,I cannot deny the widespread use of Al,which has already
become an essential tool in education today.36 I am deeply disappointed to see that some
of our students use AI to complete their assignments.I observe that they are telling AI to
think for them, rather than thinking with Al.I believe this trend will, over time, blunt
(使…变钝)the minds of our youth, consequently weakening the value of our young
generation's human capital.AI has the potential to transform the way we learn, work, and
think when used thoughtfully.
37 In the past,we had to go to bookstores to find reference books and workbooks to
test our understanding.Even then, some workbooks were too difficult, while others were too
easy and did not challenge our abilities.Based on our conversations with Al,it can alleviate
this problem by tailoring specific learning materials and self-assessments to our level of
understanding and ability.
AI can be our debate opponent.Doing so not only sharpens our ability to argue effectively
but also strengthens our capacity for critical thought.Numerous reports indicate that critical
thinking ranks as the most vital skill across all industries in the 21st century. To further
develop this skill,we can use AI to assess how deeply we understand an issue.38
AI can provide feedback.39 After doing exercises and debating with AI,it can

summarize our progress by providing constructive feedback.Traditionally,we only receive
feedback from teachers, however, the quality of feedback is dependent on a person's mood as
human feedback can change according to the situation and atmosphere.40 Al doesn't
have moods like humans do.
A.AI can help us personalize learning.
B.But with AI,the feedback is more objective.
C.This complements the points mentioned earlier.
D.Therefore,we must set clear boundaries in the use of Al.
E.AI can't be an excellent tool to recognize our learning styles.
F.It can also evaluate how capable we are of defending our position.
G.However,AI is increasingly used to finish a given task by irresponsible users.

My mother was an amazing person. She was amazing not because of any major
achievements or honors. She was amazing because of the quiet intensity of her love for her
husband, children, and grandchildren.Their needs came before her own.
The one pleasure she allowed herself was her garden. It was there that she found her joy.
Yet,even there, the flowers, herbs, and vegetables were not for her but for others.Mom
would arrange roses and lilies for a friend's wedding and sweeten our house with her favorite
yellow and white daffodils(水仙花),until the day she had to leave her garden behind.
She had been diagnosed with cancer and could no longer live alone. She came to live with
me,my wife and our 7-year-old daughter.Between treatments,my mother would work in my
garden, which, though not as spacious or inclusive of varietals as hers, became a source of
欧
comfort. She planted varieties on every exposed piece of earth she could find. Our house
became a veritable botanical garden, the envy of the neighborhood.
However,as winter came,my mother's health continued to fail.One day,I returned
from work to find she was slowly digging small holes in the garden and putting something into
them."What are you planting,Mom?"I asked.She smiled with a hint of mystery,"I left
you something. You'll know when you see it."I didn't think much of it at the time.
After that planting, she was unable to do any of her gardening work. And then, one day,
she was gone.In the following days,my family was absorbed in the seemingly endless details
associated with her. There were tears, laughter and nostalgic gatherings, during
which no plants bloomed (and my garden returned to bare earth.Weeks passed. The
coolness of the winter gave way to the richness and warmth of spring.
