In music history, one of the most iconic songs is “Hotel California” by the Eagles. It came out in 1976 and before long it was considered to be one of the greatest rock songs of all time.
The song begins with a long, slow guitar solo (独奏) – about 1 minute and 15 seconds long – but instead of making people bored, it creates a sense of mystery and expectation, and draws the listener into a cinematic mood, like entering a strange but beautiful world, which matches its lyrics.
The lyrics describe a traveler who checks into an expensive hotel that turns out to be strange and unsettling. On the one hand, the lyrics describe a haunting (闹鬼的) story; on the other hand, many people think it is a metaphor (暗喻) for the American Dream at that time, particularly in California during the 1970s. As a result, the hotel in this song stands for (代表) people who were living the American Dream, in a rich but hollow (空虚的) lifestyle, spending their whole lives chasing fame and wealth.
To sum up, the song is still popular today because of its timeless themes, memorable melody and the charming atmosphere (氛围) it creates. It won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1978 and continues to be popular among generations. Its mix of story-telling and musical skill has made it a classic that never fades away.
19. “Hotel California” is still popular today mainly thanks to ________.
A. its short and sweet voice B. its famous writer
C. its mix of story-telling and musical skill D. AI technology
20. What does the hotel in the song stand for?
A. A haunted hotel in California. B. A peaceful place for visitors.
C. The success of the Eagles band. D. People who look for the American Dream.

A. Hotel California made The Eagles famous.
B. The guitar solo is amazing.
C. Hotel California came out in 1978.
D. Hotel California is not popular now any more.
22. How is the passage structured?
A. B. C. D.

In your body, there is a hormone (激素) called insulin (胰岛素). It is really important and is used to regulate blood sugar. It works like a “key” that unlocks cells to allow sugar to enter and be used for energy. However, when people continuously (持续不断地) take in too many sweets, fried foods, sugary sodas, or lead a sedentary lifestyle with little exercise and poor sleep, the cells start to ignore insulin. This condition is called insulin resistance.
Imagine you now have a correct key to the lock. The lock won’t open because it has rusted (锈蚀). It is just like the cells stop responding to insulin. As a result, the body has no choice but to produce more and more insulin. Over time, this puts a heavy burden on the pancreas (胰腺) and can finally lead to Type 2 Diabetes (糖尿病).
Insulin resistance is a common problem in modern society, especially among people who are obese, teenagers who stay up late, or those who lack physical activity. It won’t immediately cause any pain but it can gradually lead to an increase in weight, darker skin, tiredness, and even high blood pressure (压力).
The most important treatment is not medication, but a change in lifestyle – healthy and regular eating habits, going to bed and waking up early, increasing physical activity, and avoiding binge (放纵) eating.
The good news is that insulin resistance can be reversed with persistence. Many chances will be given before it turns into Type 2 Diabetes. Protecting insulin is important because it helps protect our health for life.
23. What does the underlined word “sedentary” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. active B. strong C. fit D. lazy
24. How does the writer explain insulin resistance in Paragraph 2?
A. By giving an experiment result. B. By making a comparison.
C. By listing numbers. D. By quoting a saying.
25. Who is most likely to have insulin resistance?
A. Amy, who likes lying on the bed and eating cakes, always feels tired.
B. Bell, who likes swimming, felt acute (剧烈) pain this morning.
C. Candice, who likes feeding cats, broke her leg yesterday.
D. Diana, who likes eating chocolate, keeps losing her weight.
26. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Type 2 Diabetes can easily turn into Type 1 Diabetes.
B. The more you eat, the stronger your pancreas is.
C. People still have chance to be well from insulin resistance.
D. People with obesity must have insulin resistance.

Nowadays, more and more young Chinese people are choosing flexible jobs, which allow them to freely choose their working hours based on their own plans and needs. Instead of going to the office at a fixed (固定的) time, they can focus more on their freedom and the chance to balance work and life.
A report by Zhaopin, a job website, says over half of the people born after 1995 either have worked in or are looking for flexible jobs as they prefer less strict rules and a more relaxing working environment. Experts say the government should offer more support so that flexible jobs can become more common and widespread in the job market.
However, flexible jobs are not always easy since they require people to manage their time well and plan their future. Many companies now also want to hire flexible workers to save costs and bring in fresh ideas. Zhaopin says 38% of the companies they asked hired more flexible workers according to a survey in April 2025.
Zheng Yuan, a 28-year-old designer in Beijing, left his full-time job because it was too stressful. As a result, he takes small design jobs from different places, and he feels happier and more respected.
Feng Shuaizhang, a university professor, says there are two types of flexible jobs. One is location-based, like food delivery (送外卖). The other is online work, like design or IT, which often requires workers to have more skills and higher education. He suggests that the government help both kinds of workers get fair income (收入) and insurance. He also thinks workers should take part in designing the systems that give them jobs, to make sure they are treated fairly.
From a social perspective (角度), flexible work can make China’s job market more active, but it also makes it harder to protect workers’ rights; from the individual worker’s perspective, flexible work allows for a better and freer balance between work and life, and they help reduce stress. However, they can also lead to unstable income.
In conclusion, although flexible work is a double-edged sword (双刃剑), it has become more and more unreplaceable in China’s job market.
27. What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A. Many Chinese people like flexible jobs. B. People are not good for the job market.
C. How flexible jobs came out. D. How flexible jobs influence income.
28. Which statement is correct according to the passage?
A. People refuse flexible jobs because they can’t offer stable income.
B. If you want to have a flexible job, you must deliver food.
C. It is more likely to save money for flexible workers.
D. Managing your time wisely is important if you want to succeed in flexible jobs.
29. What is the writer’s opinion toward flexible jobs?
A. Flexible jobs are harmful and should be stopped by the government.
B. Flexible jobs are difficult to be realized in China.
C. Flexible jobs are getting more and more popular even though they have bad sides.
D. Flexible jobs are only good for young people.
30. What is the best title for this passage?
A. How to Get a Flexible Job in China

In conclusion, although flexible work is a double-edged sword (双刃剑), it has become an unstoppable trend in China’s job market.

A. People refuse flexible jobs because they can’t offer stable income. (因果倒置,所以错误)
B. If you want to have a flexible job, you must deliver food.
C. It is more likely to save money for flexible workers.
D. Managing your time wisely is important if you want to succeed in flexible jobs.
29. What is the writer’s opinion toward flexible jobs?

One possible version:
Many schools in Beijing and Shanghai now offer interesting after-school services. Students now have a platform on which they can learn something advanced.
Generally speaking, there are three types of after-school services. First, students receive homework help from their teachers when facing difficulties and consolidate their knowledge at the same time. Second, special classes are provided through public resources to cultivate students’ knowledge and skills. Finally, in order to ensure students’ safety, they can stay at school until their parents arrive to pick them up.
From my personal perspective, after-school services are beneficial to society, providing great convenience to students and parents, which also demonstrates the significant progress of humanistic care in our country.
