Comprehensive teaching and learning objectives:
By the end of this period, the students will have been able to:
1) Learn about the usages of new words, chunks and sentence patterns and try to use them in real language situations to improve language competence;
2) Comprehend the text better to reconstruct the text and improve thinking quality;

Teaching and learning procedure:
Step 1 Review
Activity 1 Review
Check the answers to the reading comprehension exercises in the reference book to review the main content of the text to improve the students’ reading comprehension of the text.
Step 2 Language Focus
(In this step, the teacher explains some of the new and important language items in the context by offering some examples so that the students could comprehend the text better and focus on how to use the new language items in specific language situations created by the teacher.)
Activity 2 Learning about the new language items
Learn about the following new language items:

3. Located to the south of the equator, below many other countries on the globe, it’s often informally referred to as “down under”. (澳大利亚)位于赤道以南,并在地球上很多国家的下方,它常被非正式地称为“down under”。

Whenever you come across some unfamiliar words, I strongly suggest that you (should) refer to your English dictionary/ look them up in your English dictionary.

5. To survive in this vast land on the ocean, the Aborigines had to be in close contact with nature.

句式结构:不定式(短语)作状语。1)不定式(短语)用作目的状语有两个可能的位置,一是在句首,二是在句末;2)不定式(短语)还可作结果状语,通常放在句末,一般不放在句首,only to do sth.这类结果状语表示的往往是一种出乎意料的结果。
e.g. The boys were making the most of time to finish the work earlier.
I called the TV station to ask for conditions about the little dog, only to be told that he was receiving medical treatment for falling on the ground.
To raise people’s awareness of environmental pollution, our city held an activity themed “The Earth Is Our Only Home” on People’s Square last Sunday. 为了提高人们对环境污染的意识,上周日,我市在人民广场举办了一场主题为“地球是我们唯一的家园”的活动。
6. Most of their musical instruments are really just sticks found on the ground, among which there is an amazing instrument called the didgeridoo. 他们绝大多数的乐器其实就是地上找到的树枝,其中就有一种令人惊叹的、叫作迪吉里杜管的乐器。
分析句式结构:1) 过去分词短语作后置定语:sticks found on the ground,instrument called the didgeridoo;2) 介词+which 引导的非限制性定语从句,which指代most of their musical instruments。
7. It is said that now nearly half of all Australian citizens were either born overseas or have parents who were born overseas.
据说,现在近一半的澳大利亚公民要么是在海外出生的,要么他们的父母是在海外出生的。
句式结构:It is said that...。1)句式“It is said that...=Sb./Sth. is said to do sth.”,意为“据说……”。其中,不定式根据情况可用一般式、进行式或完成式;2)用于本句型的动词还有 think, believe, expect, report, consider, suppose, see, recommend等。
e.g. It is said that he is an overseas Chinese. →He is said to be an overseas Chinese.
It is known that reading English books can benefit students a lot.
众所周知,阅读英语书籍对学生有很大好处。
It can easily be seen that the percentage of students who choose listening to English songs and watching English movies is respectively 65% and 50%.
不难看出,选择听英语歌曲和看英语电影的学生比例分别为65%和50%。
注意:1)在“主语 + be + said/expected/... + 不定式”结构中,不定式根据需要有时态和语态的变化:当不定式动作发生在谓语动词动作之后或与谓语动词动作同时发生时,常用不定式的一般式;当不定式动作与谓语动词动作同时发生,常用不定式的进行式;当不定式动作发生在谓语动词动作之前时,常用不定式的完成式。2)“It is suggested/recommended that...人们建议……”,that从句中的谓语动词需用虚拟语气,即 (should+)do。
e.g. It is said that the professor has already succeeded in carrying out this experiment.
→The professor is said to have already succeeded in carrying out this experiment.
It is believed that Indians were the first settlers in the Americas.
→Indians are believed to have been the first settlers in the Americas.
It is universally acknowledged that learning English well will be of great benefit to us all.
→Learning English well is universally acknowledged to be of great benefit to us all.
It is suggested that you (should) make friends with people having different characteristics or backgrounds.
8. Personally speaking, what I like most about Australia is the people themselves.
就我个人而言,我最喜欢的是澳大利亚人本身。
1) personally speaking 就本人而言,就个人意见而言
generally speaking 一般来说
broadly/ exactly /frankly /roughly /strictly speaking 泛泛地/确切地/坦白地/粗略地/严格地说
e.g. Personally speaking, I think the show is going to be a great success.
Personally speaking, working out on a daily basis is one of the good ways to keep fit.
2) 句式结构:what引导主语从句。1)what引导主语从句时,在从句中可作主语、宾语或表语;2)that引导主语从句时,可用it作形式主语,而把主语从句后置。
3) that与what引导名词性从句的区别:1) that引导名词性从句只起连接作用,在从句中不作任何成分,无意义,在宾语从句中通常省略,但在主语从句、表语从句和同位语从句中均不能省略;2) what引导名词性从句在从句中充当成分,意为“所……的(东西)”,在含义上等于“名词/代词+that引导定语从句”。
e.g. For students, what benefits most to their study is reading English books.
对学生来说,阅读英语书籍对他们的学习最有益。
It is imperative to protect oceans. First of all, what we can do is to place importance on our daily actions.
保护海洋是当务之急。首先,我们能做的就是重视我们的日常行为。
However, what amazes you most is the following new function.
It is well-known that more attention has been paid to the inquiry of traditional culture in high schools.
What is known to us is that Peking University is one of the top universities in China.
→Something that is known to us is that Peking University is one of the top universities in China.
9. They have a straightforward and free-and-easy attitude towards life, and their friendliness and warmth made me feel at home wherever I went.
他们拥有坦率且无拘无束的生活态度,他们的友善和温暖让我无论到哪里都感到轻松自在。
1) straightforward adj. 坦率的,诚实的;简单的
straightforwardly adv. 简单地;坦率地
e.g. I was impressed by his straightforward intelligent manner.
If you have any further information, just be straightforward and write to me without hesitation.
Nor does scientific knowledge derive straightforwardly from experiments and observations.
2) feel/be at home (=to feel comfortable and relaxed) 无拘束,自由自在
e.g. After a while we began to feel at home with each other.
They did everything they could to make me feel at home.
Step 3 Post Reading—Thinking quality improvement and text reconstruction
Activity 3 Thinking quality improvement and text reconstruction
1. Discuss the following questions.
1) Who wrote the travel blog? Let’s share our assumptions about the blogger’s identity and give supporting facts.
The writer may be a Chinese university student. She went on the trip during the school holiday. She majors in social studies. The National Day holiday of China usually lasts from Oct. 1 to Oct. 7. Of the great number of food experiences in Australia, the writer particularly mentions the Chinese-inspired dim sim;
The writer might also be an exchange student in a Chinese university: The blog was written in English. If the writer were Chinese, why bother to write it in English?

2) Do you like traveling? Why? What do you often do during the travel?
3) Now that we have read the blog. What do you think of the writer’s travel? Why?
2. Reconstruct the text by retelling the text, using some of the language items above.
Step 4 Evaluation and summary
Activity 4 Self-evaluation
Guide the students to reflect on their learning of this period by considering the following aspects.
1. How is your mastery of the new language items? (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor)
2. How is your learning performance? (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor)
Activity 5 Summary
(The teacher) Summarizes the usages of the main language items of this period briefly and encourages the students to explore more about Australia.
Homework:
1. Arrange notes after class to consolidate the new language items.
2. Complete the vocabulary exercises in the workbook.
3. Complete the vocabulary exercises in the reference book.
