The Story of Post-it Notes
Post-it Notes are one of the most useful inventions in daily life. You can
find them in offices, schools, and even at home. But do you know how they
were invented?
In 1968,Dr.Spencer Silver,a scientist at 3M Company,was trying to
create a very strong glue.Unexpectedly,he made a glue that was sticky but
could be easily removed. It didn't ruin the surface it was stuck to.However,
no one knew what to do with this"weak"glue. For several years, the glue had no use.Silver tried
to share his discovery with others, but nobody was interested.
Then in 1974,another 3M scientist named Art Fry had an idea.He sang in a church choir and
used small pieces of paper to mark the songs in his book. But the markers always fell out.He
remembered Silver's glue and thought,"What if I put this glue on the back of a paper marker?
The paper could stick but also be removed without damage. That was how Post-it Notes were born.
Fry was excited about his idea and worked hard to make it real.
The company first sold them in 1977.At first, people weren't sure if they needed them. The
company gave away free samples to let people try them.Once they tried them, they loved the
product.Today,Post-it Notes are sold all over the world in many colours and sizes. They help
people remember important things and organise their work. This invention shows that sometimes a
"mistake"can become a great success. It also reminds us that creative thinking can turn something
useless into something helpful.

Money is something that people often talk about in daily life. Some think it can buy almost
everything, from fancy clothes to exciting amusement park tickets, while others believe it's not the
most important thing in the world.Lily,an eighth-grader who used to love buying cute stickers
and tasty snacks, once had a simple idea:money was just for buying snacks and toys that could
make herself happy.
Last week,Lily's class planned a charity sale so that they could raise money for kids in a
poor mountain village who lacked basic stationery. She
hesitated at first but finally decided to sell her favourite
storybooks and handmade bracelets that she had spent weeks
making. At first, she worried no one would buy them because
the items were not brand-new.But to her joy, many teachers
and students came to her stall, and she raised 200 yuan in
total.
When Lily sent the money to the village school with her classmates, she saw the kids'big
smiles as they received new pencils, notebooks and colorful erasers. At that moment, she realised
money could bring warm happiness to others, not just herself. She also noticed that the time and
effort she put into preparing for the sale mattered more than the money itself.
Later,Lily talked with her parents about this meaningful experience. Her father patted her
shoulder and told her,"Money is a tool It can be used to do good things if you have a kind heart."
Lily nodded thoughtfully. She started to think about how she could help others more often.
Task 1:Answer the questions.
51.What did Lily think of money once?
52.Why did Lily hesitate at first to join the charity sale?
53.How did Lily help kids in a poor mountain village who lacked basic stationery?

Lily was a shy student who loved painting but never showed her artwork to anyone. She painted pictures alone in her bedroom every afternoon. Her paintings were beautiful, but she lacked confidence.
One day, her art teacher Mr. Brown saw her drawings and was amazed. “Lily, these are wonderful!” he said. “You should take part in our school art competition next month. Your talent should be shared with everyone.” Lily felt nervous, but Mr. Brown encouraged her gently. “Every great artist starts with courage.”
Lily decided to take the challenge. For three weeks, she worked very hard on her painting. She chose to paint her garden because it held special memories for her. She used bright colours to show the flowers and trees.
At the competition, hundreds of people came to see the artworks. The judges looked at Lily’s painting carefully. They praised her attention to detail. To everyone’s surprise, Lily won first prize! She stood on stage with tears of joy. That day taught Lily that believing in herself was more important than fear. Now she paints with confidence and helps other shy students discover their artistic talents.

The Story of Post-it Notes
Post-it Notes are one of the most useful inventions in daily life. You can find them in offices, schools, and even at home. But do you know how they were invented?
In 1968, Dr. Spencer Silver, a scientist at 3M Company, was trying to create a very strong glue. Unexpectedly, he made a glue that was sticky but could be easily removed. It didn’t ruin the surface it was stuck to. However, no one knew what to do with this “weak” glue. For several years, the glue had no use. Silver tried to share his discovery with others, but nobody was interested.
Then in 1974, another 3M scientist named Art Fry had an idea. He sang in a church choir and used small pieces of paper to mark the songs in his book. But the markers always fell out. He remembered Silver’s glue and thought, “What if I put this glue on the back of a paper marker?” The paper could stick but also be removed without damage. That was how Post-it Notes were born. Fry was excited about his idea and worked hard to make it real.
The company first sold them in 1977. At first, people weren’t sure if they needed them. The company gave away free samples to let people try them. Once they tried them, they loved the product. Today, Post-it Notes are sold all over the world in many colours and sizes. They help people remember important things and organise their work. This invention shows that sometimes a “mistake” can become a great success. It also reminds us that creative thinking can turn something useless into something helpful.

Money is something that people often talk about in daily life. Some think it can buy almost everything, from fancy clothes to exciting amusement park tickets, while others believe it’s not the most important thing in the world. Lily, an eighth-grader who used to love buying cute stickers and tasty snacks, once had a simple idea: money was just for buying snacks and toys that could make herself happy.
Last week, Lily’s class planned a charity sale so that they could raise money for kids in a poor mountain village who lacked basic stationery. She hesitated at first but finally decided to sell her favourite storybooks and handmade bracelets that she had spent weeks making. At first, she worried no one would buy them because the items were not brand-new. But to her joy, many teachers and students came to her stall, and she raised 200 yuan in total.
When Lily sent the money to the village school with her classmates, she saw the kids’ big smiles as they received new pencils, notebooks and colorful erasers. At that moment, she realised money could bring warm happiness to others, not just herself. She also noticed that the time and effort she put into preparing for the sale mattered more than the money itself.
Later, Lily talked with her parents about this meaningful experience. Her father patted her shoulder and told her, “Money is a tool. It can be used to do good things if you have a kind heart.” Lily nodded thoughtfully. She started to think about how she could help others more often.
