The beautiful handiwork of leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉绣) in Tongren,Guizhou Province, has made Guizhou embroidery one of the most important styles of embroidery in China.
Leaf-vein embroidery first appeared in the Song Dynasty. Local people in the southwestern area used it to pass on information.Yang Li,an inheritor(传承人) of this skill, has brought together the traditional embroidery of the Miao, Tujia, and Dong ethnic groups on the leaves. It shows traditional beauty with modern skills.
Making leaf-vein embroidery is not easy. First, people pick the leaves of special plants from Fanjing Mountain and dry them. After about 20 days, when the leaves become soft, people steam (蒸) them. Then, patterns inspired by ancient stories and nature are drawn on the leaves and then people embroider something on them.

However, because of the difficult making process, Yang still faces the challenge of passing down the traditional skill. In 2022, Yang set up the Guizhou embroidery intangible cultural heritage industry base.Since then, she has used social media to show leaf-vein embroidery through short videos with her studentYang Xinyu.“Leaf-vein embroidery is a treasure. As a young person influenced by my teacher Yang Li,Ihave decided to pass down this skill and hope that more young people will return to their hometowns to inherit it,” Yang Xinyu said.

Static electricity(静电) means there is an electric charge(电荷) on an object's surface. It comes from different charges between two objects. It seems that we can't avoid it, especially in winter. 58 Here are some ways you can use.
Reduce static electricity at home. 59 In winter, when we heat our houses, the air gets drier. A humidifier can make the air wetter. This can stop the electric charge from building up. Besides, growing indoor plants can also make the air wetter.
Reduce static electricity on your body. Use lotion(护肤乳) on your body after showering and before getting dressed. Lotion can prevent the electric charge from building your body. Another way is to change the materials of your clothes. 60
Use quick fixes. Use a safety pin. 61 The metal part of it releases(释放) the built-up charge in your clothes and prevents static electricity. Carrying a coin is also a good choice. Use any of these little things to touch a grounded metal surface before you touch the surface with your hand. This action can move the charge to the metal objects.
62 The easiest way to avoid static electricity is to touch objects with your knuckles(指关节) first instead of your fingers. You can also touch a non-metal thing, like a wall, before you touch metal things.
A. Touch objects correctly.
B. Avoid touching metal things.
C. How can we avoid static electricity?

Zhang Peidong from the Ocean University of China has spent the past 17 years on one thing: planting“grass”. This special grass, known as seagrass, grows in the ocean. It helps clean the air by taking in carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) and provides food for many sea animals.
Starting in 2008, Zhang's team studied how seagrass grows in coastal waters. They bravely went into cold water and carefully recorded every small change of the seagrass.“When does seagrass produce flowers and seeds(种子)? When do the seeds fall off? And when do they start to grow?” Zhang asked. To find out the answers, they did many experiments and never gave up.
Zhang said the biggest difficulty in restoring(修复) seagrass beds is planting the seeds in the right place.“We usually plant the seeds at 1 to 1.5cm deep in the soil,” said Zhang.“If the seeds are placed too deep, they can't grow easily, while if they are too near the surface, the water might wash them away.”
To help the seagrass grow faster, the team came up with new methods. Every June, they collect young seagrass plants and grow them in pools. By the end of September, they move the young plants to the ocean floor.
Thanks to their efforts, there is now more seagrass in the ocean. This has made the water cleaner and brought more animals to the area. For Zhang's team, every tiny plant is a step toward making the sea healthy again. They believe that even small actions can make a big difference for the future of the ocean.

Yang Li has done very well in leaf-vein embroidery. In 2011, Yang's leaf-vein embroidery work won the special“Guizhou Artisan” award. In 2012, she won many awards, including the gold prize at the First China Silver Jewelry and Embroidery Fair (中国银饰刺绣博览会).

D. Static electricity is more active in dry air.
E. Take the safety pin and tie it to your clothes.
F. For example, you can wear clothes made of cotton.

My Mother Raised Me Up
In the journey of my growth, it was my mother who truly raised me up. Once, when I struggled with math and felt like giving up, she sat beside me patiently, guiding me through each problem. Her support and belief in my ability lit up a tiny light within me.
This experience taught me the power of never giving up. It made me realize that challenges are opportunities for growth. With my mother's encouragement, I learned to face difficulties head-on, turning setbacks into stepping stones. Her love and trust help me be a more confident and determined person.
Through this journey, I grew stronger and wiser, understanding that the love and support from family are the tiny lights that light our road in life.

Hi, everyone! At today's class meeting, I'd like to introduce the Environmental Protection Star of our school— Wang Fei. He is fifteen years old and his hobby is picking up rubbish. He especially collects wood. Those pieces of wood may not be wanted by others, but he can give them new life. Besides, he likes picking up bottles, such as drinking bottles. He always not only uses them to water flowers but also cuts them into small pieces to make pots to grow plants. He finds picking up these things very enjoyable. These used things can be turned into useful resources. Like Wang Fei, by doing small things, we can not only make cool new things but also create a cleaner environment. Would you like to join him? Let's all do our part to help make the world a cleaner and better place!
