When your pet is ill, you should take it to a pet hospital at once. You must look after it well till it feels better.
It isn’t difficult to keep your pet healthy and happy. Treat (对待) it well and you can get a lot of fun from it.

Winter is a hard time for animals. The weather may be very cold. Food can be hard to find under the snow. How do animals live in this time? Let’s have a look.
In fall (秋天) when the weather gets cool, some animals go away from cold places and move to warm places. Some birds fly to south together because the weather there is warm and food there is easy to find. When warm days come, they will be back.
Some animals make changes to live in winter, like snowshoe rabbits in America. In summer, the rabbits’ fur (毛) is brown. But they grow new, white fur in winter. The new fur keeps them safe (安全的) in snow. In fall, they eat to get fat (脂肪), because the fat can also help them keep warm in winter.
Other animals sleep all winter and they don’t eat at all. Before winter, these animals eat a lot to grow fat. When winter comes, they go to sleep. Black bears (熊) in cold places make beds to sleep in. Some of them can sleep for seven months.
1.Which animals will probably (可能) move to south in winter?
A.Rabbits. B.Snakes. C.Birds. D.Bears.
2.The fur of snowshoe rabbits is ________ in winter.
A.brown B.white C.yellow D.green
3.Before winter, some animals ________ to get fat.
A.sleep a lot B.play a lot C.drink a lot D.eat a lot
4.What is the right structure (结构) of the text? (①= paragraph 1)
A. B.
C. D.
5.What can be the best title (标题) for the text?
A.Where Animals Stay in Winter B.How Animals Live in Winter
C.Why Animals Sleep in Winter D.What Animals Eat in Winter
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.D 4.A 5.B

①For a long time, Iceland was famous as one of the few countries in the world with no mosquitoes (蚊子). However, a recent discovery has changed this fact.
②The story began on a Thursday , evening in October. Björn Haltason, a man who loves studying insects, found a strange insect. He quickly caught it because he thought it might be a mosquito. Excited by his find, he continued to look and later discovered two more of the same insects nearby. He carefully collected all of them and sent his findings to the Icelandic Institute (研究所) of Natural History.
③At the study center, an entomologist (昆虫学家) named Matthias Alfreðsson studied the insects. He made sure they were mosquitoes, specifically a special type called Culiseta annulata that can survive in very cold winters. This finding was very meaningful. It was the first official record of mosquitoes living and growing outdoors in Iceland. He explained that this type of mosquito is special because it can survive in the cold Icelandic winter. These insects stay in warm places during the coldest months, which allows them to live through the winter. Before this, mosquitoes were only sometimes found on planes arriving in the country, but they never managed to survive outside.
④The main reason for this change, scientists say, is because of climate change. As our planet becomes warmer, insects can move to and live in new areas. Iceland is warming at a speed of four times faster than the average in the Northern Hemisphere (北半球). This rapid warming makes the environment more suitable for mosquitoes.
⑤This discovery ends Iceland’s long history of being a mosquito-free country. It clearly shows how climate change is influencing our world in real and clear ways, even changing which animals can live where.

Some people say dolphins (海豚) are smart like humans. They can think, understand and learn things quickly. Scientists say dolphins are like humans in some ways. How?
Like humans, every dolphin has its own “name”. The name is a special sound. Each dolphin chooses a special sound for itself at birth (出生时).
Dolphins are like people in other ways, too. They “talk” to each other about a lot of things—such as their age and finding food. They also use sounds and body language to talk. Understanding dolphin words is not easy for humans. No one speaks dolphin words, but some scientists are trying to learn.
Dolphins are also social (群居的) animals. They live in groups, and often join othersfrom different groups to play games and have fun—just like people. Scientists believe playing together is something only smart animals do.
Both humans and dolphins make plans for getting things they want. For example, when there are fish near a boat, dolphins jump high to ask the fishermen to put their nets (网). The men can catch a lot of fish. Why do dolphins help the men? Because they can get some fish that run away from the net.
1.Why do people say dolphins are smart?
A.Because they are like cats and dogs.
B.Because they can think, understand and learn things quickly.
C.Because their brains work the same as humans’.
D.Because every dolphin has its own “name”.
2.From this passage, in which ways are dolphins and humans like each other?
①They have names. ②They play in groups.
③They can talk to other kinds of animals.
④They can make plans to get things they want.
A.①②④ B.①③④ C.①②③ D.②③④
3.What does the underlined word “others” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Other fishes. B.Other dolphins. C.Other people. D.Other animals.
4.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Smart Dolphins Can Talk. B.Dolphins Help Humans.
C.Dolphins Are Like Humans. D.Dolphins Are Different From Humans.
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.B 4.C
【导语】本文介绍了海豚在多个方面与人类的相似之处,说明海豚是一种高智商的群居动物。
1.第一段“Some people say dolphins (海豚) are smart like humans. They can think, understand and learn things quickly.”,开篇直接给出官方定义,人们认为海豚聪明,就是因为它们能快速思考、理解、学习事物,这是文章对“海豚聪明”的直接解释。
2.第二段“Like humans, every dolphin has its own ‘name’.”,海豚和人类一样都有自己的“名字”,①正确;第四段“They live in groups, and often join others from different groups to play games and have fun—just like people.”,海豚和人类一样会群体生活,一起玩耍,②正确;文中未提及海豚能和其他种类的动物交谈,③错误;第五段“Both humans and dolphins make plans for getting things they want.”,海豚和人类都会为得到自己想要的东西制定计划,④正确。因此含有①②④的为正确选项。
3.“Dolphins are also social (群居的)animals. They live in groups, and often join others from different groups to play games and have fun—just like people. ”可知,这里的“others”指的是其他海豚,它们会和不同群体的海豚一起玩游戏。
4.文章主要围绕海豚在很多方面和人类相似展开,如都有“名字”、会“交谈”、群居、能制定计划等,因此选项C“海豚和人类一样”最适合作为文章标题。
进阶拓展训练5篇
For some people, it can be very hard to do nothing. Many of us want to help wild animals when they seem (似乎) to be in danger. But we need to stop doing so. You should leave the animals alone (单独地). They are stronger than we think.
Young wildlife (野生动物) is not usually alone. Their parents may be just around them. For example, baby birds often leave their homes before they can fly. They jump around under the tree for days. At the same time, their parents may get food somewhere else.
Your “help” may hurt animals. A man in Georgia sees a manatee (海牛) out of the water. He thinks the manatee needs help. So he puts it back into the water. But the manatee may just enjoy the sun on a warm day.
Your “help” may also hurt you. Even professionals (专业人士) get hurt sometimes. Manatees may look slow. But they are very strong.
Sometimes wildlife does need our help. You’ll know it when it is in a man-made trap (人造陷阱). If so, call professionals. They know how to help wild animals.
In a word, the best way is to leave wildlife alone. Just keep it really wild. It is good for both you and the animal.
1.How does the writer show his idea in Paragraph 2?
A.By asking questions. B.By giving an example.
C.By using numbers. D.By telling stories.
2.What do we know about manatees?
A.They don’t like staying in the water.
B.They always go out of the water to enjoy the sun.
C.They move quickly in the water.
D.They are strong and dangerous for people.
3.Which of the following may the writer agree with (同意)?
A.Jason takes a baby bird under the tree home.
B.Tom calls professionals when he sees a whale on the beach.
C.Danny leaves a fox in a man-made trap alone.
D.Anne gives food to pandas in the zoo.
4.What does “it” refer to?
A.the baby bird B.the manatee C.the wildlife D.the food
5.What is the best title for the text?
A.Birds under the tree B.Wonderful manatees
C.The best for wildlife D.Wildlife professionals
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.B 4.C 5.C

2.第四段说明关于海牛的情况:“Manatees may look slow. But they are very strong.”,结合第三段海牛可能只是想晒太阳以及第四段专业人士也可能被海牛伤害,表明海牛很强壮,对人有危险性。
3.第五段指出正确帮助野生动物的方式:“Sometimes wildlife does need our help. You’ll know it when it is in a man-made trap. If so, call professionals.”,说明看到野生动物陷入人造陷阱时应联系专业人士,由此可推断汤姆看到海滩上的鲸鱼时联系专业人士,是作者会同意的做法。
4.第五段前文提到“Sometimes wildlife does need our help.”,后文“ You’ll know it when it is in a man-made trap.”,结合上下文可知,it指代前文提到的wildlife(野生动物)。

Three students are talking about their favourite animals:
Amy
My favourite animal is the chameleon (变色龙). I like chameleons because they can change colour. Many people think that chameleons change colour to match where they are. But that’s not true! Chameleons change colour when they feel afraid, angry, too cold, or too hot. So, their colour tells us how they feel. Chameleons also have a long, sticky tongue (黏的舌头). They use it to catch insects. Do you know their eyes can look in two different directions at once? I think they’re amazing animals!
Steve
I really love elephants. They are big and kind. I love their big ears and long trunks. Their trunks are very strong and useful. They use their trunk to pick up food and put it in their mouth. They also collect water in their trunk and spray it out (喷出) to drink or take a shower. Elephants live in big families and help each other. I enjoy watching videos of elephants, especially (尤其) baby elephants. Baby elephants stay close to their mothers. I laugh a lot when they trip over (绊倒) their own feet — they’re so cute!
Isabella
Dolphins are my favourite animals. I like them because they’re so smart and friendly. Dolphins live in the sea and love to play. They communicate with clicks and whistles (咔嗒声和哨声), almost like a secret language. Some dolphins live in zoos and have to do tricks (把戏) for people, like jumping through circles or playing with balls. That makes me really sad. I think it’s cruel (残忍的) to keep them in small pools. Dolphins should be free to swim, play, and explore the open sea. They’re happiest when they’re free.
1.According to Amy, why do chameleons change colour?
A.To stay safe.
B.To catch insects for food.
C.To match the things around them.
D.To show their feelings or their health.
2.How does Steve feel when he watches videos of baby elephants?
A.He has a lot of fun.
B.He is surprised by how quickly they learn.
C.He is unhappy about their safety in the wild.
D.He feels sorry because they often fall over.
3.What does Isabella think about dolphins living in zoos?
A.They should live freely in the ocean.
B.They are safer in zoos than in the wild.
C.They do not learn enough skills in zoos.
D.They enjoy playing with balls and jumping.
4.What is the main idea all three students share?

Alone in a town in England, Genevieve Moss had serious hearing loss. Her world had always been quiet.
Then one day in April 2021, a photo of a tiny black-and-white cat caught the 64-year-old lady’s eye as she read the local newspaper. A family was looking for a home for the kitten (小猫). Genevieve fell in love with him at once and phoned the family. Soon, the cat came to her and Genevieve called him Zebby.
However, ________. When the phone was ringing or someone was knocking at the door, the cat would keep walking up and down in front of Genevieve until she got the message. At night, Zebby slept next to her. If there was an unusual noise outside, he would jump up and tap the owner on her head to let her know this.
The cat soon took on another job: collecting Genevieve’s mail. Whenever he heard the mailbox being opened, he would run over, carry the mail in his mouth and drop it at the lady’s feet. Zebby would even bring Genevieve her slippers (拖鞋)!
Later, Zebby was named Britain’s National Cat of the Year by Cats Protection. According to the largest cat charity, Zebby stood out from about 3,000 other cats because of his great service. The cat had no training at all, but his talents seemed to have told him that his owner needed his help.

For many people, our closest encounter (相遇) with wild animals is at a zoo. Zoos let us see amazing animals like lions, tigers, and even small lizards up close. It’s fun and educational, but is it really the best place for the animals?
In the past, people could only see wild animals as stuffed displays (标本) in museums. Later, explorers caught live animals and showed them in menageries (小型动物园), which were early zoos. Back then, people didn’t care much about the animals’ well-being. Today’s zoos are different. They now provide bigger spaces and try to make the animals’ homes look like their natural environments.
Some people think it’s cruel to keep animals in cages just for entertainment. However, zoos argue that they help educate people about wildlife conservation. In the UK, a law passed in 1981 requires zoos to teach visitors about conservation. Many zoos also help support and fund programs to protect wildlife.
Zoos often say they are important for saving endangered species that could become extinct because of climate change. Robert Young, a professor of conservation, said many species would not live without zoos. For example, Chester Zoo in the UK helped save the golden skiffia fish from disappearing.
As the debate about zoos continues, new technologies like virtual reality may offer different ways to experience wildlife.
1.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.To show that all zoos are now educational.
B.To highlight the educational function of zoos.
C.To explain how zoos have become more entertaining.
D.To discuss the financial support for zoos.
3.Which of the following statements is TRUE based on the passage?
A.Zoos have always provided large spaces for animals.
B.The main purpose of zoos has changed to entertainment.
C.Zoos in the past focused on animal welfare and education.
D.Modern zoos are required to educate visitors about wildlife conservation.
4.What is Robert Young’s attitude toward zoos?
A.He believes zoos are harmful and should be shut down.
B.He thinks zoos are important for protecting endangered species.
C.He feels that zoos do not provide enough education for visitors.
D.He thinks zoos are only focused on entertainment.
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.B

2. Don’t keep cool all the time.
If a pet always stays in a cool room, it’ll get sick. You should make an exercise plan and walk it in the morning or evening. But remember not to take it out on a hot afternoon suddenly.
3. Go to a pet hospital quickly.
When your pet is ill, you should take it to a pet hospital at once. You must look after it well till it feels better.

A.They don’t like staying in the water.
B.They always go out of the water to enjoy the sun.
C.They move quickly in the water.
