Forest elephants are a kind of lovely wild animals that live in the rainforests of Central Africa. They are smaller than African savanna elephants, with shorter tusks and rounder ears. Forest elephants are very important to the rainforest ecosystem (生态系统). They eat a lot of fruit every day, and the seeds (种子) in the fruit will be spread to different places with their excrement (粪便), which helps many plants grow.
These elephants live in small groups of about 2 to 6 members, usually led by an old female elephant. They are very gentle and shy, and they like to stay in the deep rainforest to avoid humans. However, forest elephants are in great danger now. Many people hunt them for their tusks, and the rainforest is being cut down for wood and farmland. Their living places are becoming smaller and smaller, and the number of forest elephants is dropping quickly.
To protect forest elephants, many African countries have made laws to stop hunting them. Some international organizations also set up nature reserves (自然保护区) for them. Besides, people around the world are called on to stop buying products made of elephant tusks. Only in this way can we save these lovely animals and keep the rainforest ecosystem balanced.
