By my early 40s, I had tried all the hobbies that were supposed to make me feel better about entering middle age. And then, when I was almost ___16___ I decided to sign up for a ballet class. “But you’re not very flexible (灵活的),” my husband gently reminded me. He wasn’t ___17___. I nearly injured myself the one time I tried to lift my leg to stretch (拉伸). Also, my record for physical activities wasn’t great: Between short stays on the badminton court, a brief experience of cycling, and an on-and-off relationship with ___18___ I could see how I didn’t exactly look like ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员) material. But I made up my mind to give it a try. I needed to be certain that my body could move in a beautiful way.
My every move invited my teacher’s close examination, but I didn’t know that he would change my way of being in the world. My teacher reminded me that ballet isn’t about perfection. ___19___, he said, it’s about trying your best for perfection.
Slowly, I started becoming more comfortable with the body I saw staring back at me in the ___20___. I still need to work on the way I stand, and my ___21___ are never as high as they feel. If anything, ballet is forcing me to rethink my relationship with my ___23___ and instead of noticing only the beginnings of older age, I am now amazed at what I can do and the changes I’ve seen as I’ve learned to stand with more confidence and courage.
Eight years into my ballet classes, I’m what you would call a lifelong advanced beginner. At the age of 50, I am still not the kind that anybody would pay money to see on ___24___. But as I stood in my living room, dancing for nobody but myself, I felt every inch a ___25___.

He was an old man who fished alone in a boat and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish, the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now exactly and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week.
It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his boat empty and he always went down to help him carry fishing tools.
The old man was thin with deep wrinkles (皱纹) in the back of his neck. His hands had the deep scars (疤) from dealing with heavy fish. But none of these scars were fresh.
Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same colour as the sea and were cheerful and full of confidence.
“Santiago,” the boy said to him as they climbed from the bank where the boat was pulled up. “I could go with you again. We’ve made some money.”
The old man taught the boy to fish before and the boy loved him. “No.” the old man said. “You’re with a lucky boat. Stay with them.”
“But remember how you went eighty-seven days without fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks.”
“I remember,” the old man said. “I know you did not leave me willingly.”
“It was papa made me leave. I am a boy and I must do what he told me to.”
“I know.” the old man said. “I quite understand that.”
“He hasn’t much faith (信念).”
“No.” the old man said. “But we have. Haven’t we?”
“Yes,” the boy said. “Can I offer you a beer on the Terrace and then we’ll take the fishing tools home.”
“Why not?” the old man said. “Between fishermen.”
They sat on the Terrace and many of the fishermen made fun of the old man and he was not angry. Some other older fishermen looked at him and were sad. But they didn’t show it and they spoke politely about the sea, the weather and of what they had seen.

At the Jinzhong National Agricultural High-Tech Industry Demonstration Zone in Shanxi province, some truly “out-of-this-world” work is going on. Descendants (后代) of upland rice seeds that experienced “space breeding (育种)” have been harvested there.
The upland rice seeds were taken to the Tiangong space station by the Shenzhou XVI crew in May 2023. There, they experienced space radiation (辐射) and microgravity (微重力), which caused genetic mutations (基因突变).
After spending more than 150 days in space, the seeds returned to Earth on Oct 31. Scientists studied the mutations. They found that some of the mutations gave the seeds qualities (品质) that farmers prefer, such as higher production, faster growth, and better resistance (抵抗) to diseases.
“For space breeding, the space environment holds great value, which cannot be easily replicated (复制) on Earth,” Professor Dong Qi from Shanxi Agricultural University told China Daily. “Traditional breeding usually takes eight to ten years, but space breeding could reduce the time by half, ” he added. He explained that these seeds may look the same on the outside but go through important changes on the inside.
Space breeding, however, is not a simple task. Not all seeds mutate in space, so careful selection is key. With limited space on the spacecraft, only select seeds are sent to space. After space travel, the seeds still need to be tested for things like production, quality, and market value. In the end, only a few of the seeds pass the test to become true “space seeds”.
The journey of Chinese crop seeds into space began in 1987 when a recyclable scientific experiment satellite carried seeds into space. Since then, over 3,000 space breeding experiments have been done, resulting in more than 240 main grain types and over 400 new types of vegetables, fruits, trees, grasses, and flowers. These have result in an increase in grain harvests by about 2.6 million tons every year.
37. Which is true about the upland rice seeds that experienced space breeding?
A. They were taken to space by Shenzhou XV.
B. They were bred in space for about six months.
C. Some became better for farmers to grow.
D. Some could cure the diseases after genetic mutations
38. What did Dong Qi say about space breeding?
A. It allows for larger seed production. B. It is faster than traditional breeding.
C. It will never be done in a lab on Earth. D. Traditional breeding will disappear soon.
39. Which of the following statements is NOT a fact?
A. Space breeding is not a simple task.
B. Only select seeds are sent to space.
C. Seeds returning from space are tested for production and market value.
D. Only a few of the seeds pass the test to become true “space seeds”.
40. Which practice would the author agree with?
A. Sending as many seeds to space as possible to increase mutation chances.
B. Being quite careful in choosing seeds for space breeding.
C. Using space breeding on animals in the future.
D. Stopping traditional breeding to focus only on space methods.
