Prasiddhi Singh became an environmentalist at age 7 after a cyclone()destroyed
trees in her hometown in Tamil Nadu.Seeing the damage made her realize how important
trees are for protecting communities from natural disasters. She started by planting trees
and later created the Prasiddhi Forest Foundation to share her message.
This non-profit organization teaches people about living in a green way through its "3G
Network"programme. This programme encourages people to produce their own oxygen(
by planting trees, grow their own food, and gift these efforts to their community.
Prasiddhi is a young girl who has done many great things to help the environment.
Even though she is still very young, she has already made a big difference. She has planted
more than 150,000 trees all by herself. This helps keep the Earth green and healthy.
Prasiddhi has actively contributed to the recovery of mangroves (and lakes-
important natural habitats that safeguard wildlife. This has also helped reduce the risk of
flooding and protect the balance of nature.
She has spoken at big events like TEDx and the United Nations Climate Change
Summit (COP 28 and 29).She talks about how we can all help fight climate change. When
she was only 8 years old,she won the Pradhan MantriRashtriyaBalPuraskar, which is the
highest award for children in India.
Prasiddhi's work has inspired thousands of people, particularly in her home state of
Tamil Nadu. Her concept of "fruit forests"has been especially successful, where many
kinds of fruit-growing places are created in community areas, schools, and offices. These
forests do not only help the environment but also act as places for people to meet, bringing
people together and encouraging them to take part in community life.

We know animals help their close family. However, whether unrelated animals can be
long-term friends has long been questioned.Proving this kind of social behaviour is very
difficult without enough research facts.
Now,a new study with 20 years of field data(),published in the journal Nature,
has found that the African superb starling()forms groups with both family and non-
family members. And these groups can be as small as 7 birds or as large as 60,and they
live much like humans do.
“Starling societies are not just simple families,.they're much more complex(复杂的),
having a mixture of related and unrelated birds that live together, explains Professor
Dustin Rubenstein of Columbia University.
African superb starlings belong to the starling family, living over 15 years and
growing up to 19 cm tall. The study looked at starlings from central Kenya that breed(
twice a year, during rainy seasons. After observing them for over 40 continuous
breeding seasons, researchers were able to understand the relationship between breeding
birds and helpers.
They found each breeding pair was helped by up to 16 non-breeders,called helpers.
This help even included searching for food for the young birds and protecting the nest from
predators().In return, this helped increase group size. The adult survival rate of
larger starling groups was seen to be higher than that in smaller groups.
However, this doesn't mean that the helpers are fair to both family and non-family
members.Starling helpers still preferred relatives, but also often and actively help
unrelated members.
Robert Trivers'1971 paper on helping each other in the animal kingdom suggested
that these kinds of helpful behaviours among animals were probably common,as animals
spent short-term energy helping another, trusting that there would be some benefit
later on.
"Many of these birds are forming friendships over time,"Rubenstein said."I think
this kind of helping each other behaviour is likely going on in a lot of animal societies, and
people just haven't studied them long enough to be able to see it.
28.How long did the new study last?
A.For 7 years.
B.For 15 years.
C.For 20 years.
D.For 60 years.
29.What is the main purpose of the third paragraph?
A.To tell how birds find food.
B.To explain starling societies.
C.To compare birds with humans.
D.To show why starlings are special.
【高一英语第4页(共8页)】
30.What is the key finding about starling helpers?
A.They get no return for their help.
B.They only help their close relatives.
C.They help both relatives and others.
D.They avoid meeting with predators.
31.What can be inferred from Rubenstein's words?
A.Studies on birds are enough.
B.Most animals never help each other.
C.Only starlings can form real friendships.
D.Animal friendships might be quite common.

The idea of jetpacks(喷气背包)has long had us daydreaming of flying around in the
air. Now,a company called CudaJet has taken these dreams and placed them elsewhere-in
the ocean. The UK company has created what they say is the world's first underwater
jetpack.
Invented by Archie O'Brien and produced in England, the CudaJet offers speeds of up
to 10 feet per second-faster than any swimmer out there-and provides about 90 minutes
of self-powered underwater adventures.Having a special system, the jetpack is operated
by a handheld controller, with the user's body providing the direction while the machine
creates forward force. The CudaJet has a "quick attach"technology that fits most sizes and
can be put on and set in a matter of seconds.
It looks like a backpack and even allows users to roll sideways like a dolphin in the
ocean. Its carbon fiber structure(碳纤维结构)keeps it lightweight while providing the
perfect balance between strong and flexible().But,to keep yourself safe, you must
wear a diying mask that covers your nose to prevent any injury, and you must safely
compensate for your ears-this means leveling the air pressure between your middle ear and
the surrounding environment.
The jetpack has been tested at depths of up to 131 feet;however, out of safety, the
CudaJet has a 10-foot limit to prevent inexperienced users from going too deep, too
quickly. If this happens, the power will cut out, with the buoyancy()of the jetpack
bringing the user to the surface. The CudaJet also stops the moment the wearer lets go of
the handheld controller and doesn't go any further, aided by the force of water.
The biggest downside of the CudaJet is that it can only be used for free diving with
special tools.Besides, long hair can get caught in the intake,so it must be pulled back
carefully;you can only charge()with dry connections in a dry environment;and you
mustn't store it when it's fully charged.
32.What is the main function of the CudaJet?
A.Flying in the sky.
B.Moving in water.
C.Driving on roads.
D.Running in forests.
33.How is the CudaJet controlled?
A.By a handheld controller.
B.By the user's body.
C.By a special system.
D.By the water force.
34.What does the underlined phrase "compensate for"in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Balance.
B.Clean.
C.Protect.
D.Check.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.The History of Jetpacks
B.The Dream of Flying Comes True
C.How to Use an Underwater Jetpack
D.A New Invention for Underwater Fun:CudaJet

The sharp winter wind felt like ice against Alex's face as he walked home. The
afternoon was quickly turning into evening, and the air grew colder by the minute. He
pulled his coat tighter, noticing how his breath looked like thick white smoke in the fading
light.The sun had almost disappeared,leaving long,strange shadows()from the
leafless trees that seemed to move on the icy ground.
Everything was so quiet that his own footsteps sounded like loud drums in his ears.
He kept his head down against the cold, thinking about tomorrow's difficult maths test.
He had studied for hours, but the last problem set still confused him, making him feel
worried and unsure.
Passing one of the oldest, most worn buildings,he noticed an elderly woman with
silver hair neatly tied in a bun().She stood at the bottom of a poorly lit staircase,
her thin body looking weak in the growing darkness. She was clearly finding it hard to
carry a very full shopping basket. Each step she took looked like a real struggle.
Suddenly, hurried footsteps came from behind."Alex!Wait up!"It was his two
classmates,James and Ben."Are you ready for the maths test tomorrow?"James asked,
with a nervous look."I stayed up until midnight trying to solve them, but the geometric
proofs(几何证明)still make no sense to me,”Ben added, pressing his forehead with his
fingers."And the word problems are just confusingly long.James said with a low,
unhappy voice."Yeah,I think we're all in trouble if this is what tomorrow brings. Those
last few problems are really hard.
Just then, they heard a soft cry from the stairs. The old woman's foot had slipped
