Dorothy lived with her uncle Henry and aunt Em who were both farmers. Their house had only four walls, a floor and a small space under the floor to protect them from powerful winds. The house was in the middle of poor land with strong sunlight and few plants. Aunt Em used to be young and cheerful, but the sun and wind had taken away her happiness. Uncle Henry also looked serious and strict. Only Toto, a little black dog with shiny hair and bright eyes, could bring laughter into Dorothy’s life.
One day; they heard low sounds of wind from both the north and the south. Uncle Henry realized a strong wind was coming. He rushed to protect the animals while Aunt Em hurried Dorothy to the basement. Suddenly, the house began to rock and rise to the air. In the center, the wind blew loudly, but Dorothy found herself riding safely on the rising house.
Frightened, Toto ran around the room until Dorothy caught him and protected him from falling through the open door. She closed it carefully to avoid further danger. As hours passed, Dorothy slowly got over her fear. She finally fell asleep on her bed with Toto by her side. The wind had set Dorothy’s house down gently in a beautiful country.
As she looked around, she saw green grass, fruitful trees, and colourful flowers. Birds with special feathers sang and flew around. As she stood enjoying the beautiful views, a group of strangely dressed people came near. They wore round hats that rose to a small point a foot above their heads. Once in a physics class, the teacher asked students, “Why do we have brakes (刹车) in our car?” A student got up and replied, “Sir, to stop the car.” Another student replied, “To reduce and control the speed of the car.” Another said, “To avoid crashes.” Soon, all the students began to give similar answers. So, the teacher decided to answer the question himself. He said, “I agree with all of your answers, although I look at it this way—the brakes in our car enable us to make it run faster.”
Listening to this, there was a deep silence in the class because no one had imagined this answer. The teacher continued, “For a moment, let’s suppose our car has no brakes, then how fast are we ready to drive our car? It is the brakes in our car that give us the courage to drive faster, as they ensure we can stop when needed and reach our destination (目的地) safely.” All the students got confused. They never thought this way about brakes in a car.
The teacher smiled and continued, “Similarly, there are many such Brakes in our life, which stop us or restrict (限制) our movement. Our parents, teachers, friends ask us about the direction we want to follow, our progress or decisions in life. We tend to view their questions or difficult situations as Brakes that slow us down. But what if we see them as our supporters that enable us to take risks while making sure that we protect ourselves? From time to time, we have to stop or even step back, so that we can take a big step. It is because of such questions or situations that we are able to reach where we are today. Without these Brakes, we could slip, lose direction or be a victim of unlucky accidents. Therefore, we need to understand that Brakes in our life are not meant to push us back but to help us move forward faster than before, so that we can reach our destination quickly and safely. Should we be thankful for Brakes in life or just see them as a hindrance (障碍物) to our work?”
30. Which of the following statements about brakes is NOT from the students?
A. They are difficult to fix up. B. They are helpful to control speed.
C. They are used to stop driving. D. They are the key part of safe driving.
31. The teacher thinks brakes help run faster because ________.
A. no one knows how to drive without brakes B. no one has ever imagined a car without brakes
C. we are afraid to drive fast without brakes D. we can’t reach our destination without brakes
32. What does the teacher compare to Brakes in our life?
A. Unlucky accidents and mistakes. B. Questions and difficulties.
C. Risks and accidents. D. Directions or decisions.
33. What does the teacher mainly want to tell the students?
A. Brakes are often misused and misunderstood.
B. Brakes in cars are necessary for increasing speed.
C. Brakes in life push us back and force us to step back.
D. Brakes can be viewed as supporters and safety guards.

Climate change is leading polar bears to be in danger, according to the research published on Monday. It says the top carnivores (食肉动物) could all disappear within the human lifetime.
In some areas, they have fallen into a vicious circle. As sea ice melts, it cuts the time for bears to hunt seals, scientists reported in Nature Climate Change. “Their decreasing weight reduces their chances of surviving Arctic winters without food,” the scientists added.
“The bears face an ever longer fasting period (禁食期) before the ice refreezes and they can head back out to feed,” Steven Amstrup, who designed the study, told AFP.
The study predicted that the number of polar bears in the subpopulations (亚种群) would decrease because of the rapid pace of change in the Arctic. The polar bears in 12 of 13 subpopulations will disappear within 80 years. The Arctic is warming at three times the rate of the Earth. “By 2100, the number of newborn polar bears will decrease to 0, except in the Queen Elizabeth Island subpopulations,” said Amstrup.
According to the study, one degree of warming has caused many disasters so far. Sea level rise will lead to even more problems. Even if humans can control global warming at 2.4℃, it would probably only delay the disappearance of polar bears. There are many animals at risk on the Earth, but only polar bears are among the species most endangered by climate change. In fact, the rising temperature is not a danger to other animals, but to polar bears. They cannot get used to a rapidly changing environment.
“However, the situation may not last long, and should be seen as a warning of how climate will influence other animals in the coming years,” the experts said.
The polar bear’s “vulnerable” status is on the IUCN Red List of endangered species, but it does not show their difficulties, the experts argue. The IUCN has taken measures in place to stop poaching. “But we cannot build a fence to protect sea ice from rising temperatures,” said Amstrup.
34. How does the melting of sea ice influence polar bears?
A. Polar bears’ population will rise. B. Polar bears can find more food easily.
C. Polar bears may live longer than before. D. Polar bears have less time to hunt seals.
35. According to the study by Amstrup, why would rising temperatures cause fewer polar bears?
A. Rising temperatures make polar bears become homeless.
B. Rising temperatures have left polar bears with food.
C. Polar bears can’t live in such a quickly changing environment.
D. The rising sea level is stopping people from protecting polar bears.
36. What do the experts think of the influence of temperature on polar bear population?
A. Annoying. B. Harmless. C. Unimportant. D. Worrying.

Welcome to the world of clay sculpting (泥塑)! Shape your imagination and show your creativity. Here are some tips to help you pick the right clay and improve your sculpting skills.
What type of clay should you use?
There are several types of clay used for sculptures, -depending on how you can use them and the type of finished product you would like to have.
Oil-based modeling clay
※ hard and does not dry out like water-based clay
※ not easy to work with as it requires heat to soften
Polymer-based modeling clay
※ soft and does not dry out, making it easy to mold (成形)
“Firing” clay
※ water-based clay
※ easy to sculpt with this clay to create different shapes
Walter E. Disney clay
※ water-based clay
※ used by experienced sculptors
Using water-based clay is the best for beginners to practise sculpting skills at home. It is by far the easiest to use to create shapes with simple tools and it can be cleaned up easily with soap and water.
How do you start sculpting?
Follow the five useful tips to make clay sculptures.
Think of the final piece
Before you start, design how you imagine the final product to look like in different ways.
Test clay for wetness
Pull off a small piece of the clay and roll (卷) it in your hand until it forms a cylindrical (圆柱形的) shape. If it is soft, it is usable. If it breaks, try adding more water.
Shape your clay
Coiling the clay is a good way of turning clay into circles to create detailed shapes. This prevents the shaped clay from breaking into pieces.
Try out and practise
Check how different tools affect the material. Try out ways of building up clay, connecting pieces and adding details.
Have fun
All sculptors improve by learning from their mistakes. Working with clay is supposed to be a relaxing and fun experience. Do not be afraid to try even if you know nothing.
37. If you start to learn sculpting at home, which type of clay should you choose?
A. “Firing” clay. B. Walter E. Disney clay.
C. Oil-based modeling clay. D. Polymer-based modeling clay.
38. What should you do first if you try making a clay sculpture?
A. Make sure the clay is totally wet. B. Use different tools to shape the clay.
C. Roll the clay to make sure it’s soft. D. Draw the pictures of your final product.
39. Which picture best describes “coiling the clay”?
A. B.
C. D.

To protect the environment, our school held an “Earth Hour” activity last Saturday.
It started at 8:30 p.m. on March 28. The activity aimed to make people realize their duty to protect the Earth. Its theme was protecting biological diversity and speaking up for our planet. During that hour, we turned off lights together and felt the quiet beauty of the night.
I think we can do more. Firstly, we should save water by taking shorter showers and reusing water when possible. Secondly, using both sides of paper helps reduce waste. If everyone takes action, our Earth will become better.
