Children with disorders of consciousness are fully dependent on caregivers for daily care such as hydration (补水), nutrition, washing and dressing. However, there is a shortage of tools to evaluate consciousness for children aged 2 to 18. Neurodevelopmental changes with age further complicate the assessment of children’s awareness.
To address this problem, researchers from Anglia Ruskin University. The Children’s Trust and Temple University have created the MuSICCA tool. It uses musical stimulation to help children demonstrate their level of consciousness. Specially selected music is performed live by a qualified music therapist, who adjusts the music based on the child’s responses to maximize their chance to show their abilities.
The therapist observes and records the child’s behaviour using standard scales, and MuSICCA then generates a diagnosis of their consciousness level.
In the study, researchers invited music therapists, families of brain-injured children and healthcare professionals to evaluate the tool. After demonstration and Q&A sessions, participants rated two statements about MuSICCA: whether it assesses consciousness, and whether it is suitable for children and young people. They also commented on its strengths and weaknesses.
All participants agreed with the two statements, with 85% strongly agreeing with each. Lead author Dr Jonathan Pool stated that children with consciousness disorders rely on others to interpret their subtle behaviour, and reliable assessment tools are urgently needed. MuSICCA enables rigorous assessment of responses to musical stimuli, clearly showing the child’s consciousness level and response patterns. The results are easy to share with care and medical teams and help families understand how to support their child’s recovery.
The study confirms that MuSICCA is a suitable and comprehensive assessment method, with advantages for providing guidance, engaging caregivers and assisting clinical teams.
24. What problem are children with disorders of consciousness faced with?
A. They need help with daily care.
B. They cannot get proper medical treatment.
C. Their consciousness is hard to assess.
D. Their development is affected by age.
25. How does the MuSICCA tool work?
A. It asks children to make music.
B. It uses pre-recorded music to test children.
C. It depends on parents to report behaviour.
D. It changes music based on a child’s reactions.
26. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. Who was invited to take part.
B. How the evaluation was conducted.
C. Why different experts were needed.
D. What opinions participants held.
27. What does Dr Jonathan Pool’s statement suggest about MuSICCA?
A. It aids children’s treatment and healing.
B. All participants agreed it was effective.
C. It can replace caregivers’ observations.
D. Caregivers need to learn how to use it.

A new study from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has uncovered a specific molecular chain reaction in the brain that may contribute to some forms of autism (自闭症) spectrum disorder (ASD). The research, published in Molecular Psychiatry, focuses on the common chemical messenger nitric oxide (一氧化氮). In a healthy brain, nitric oxide helps fine-tune communication between neurons. However, the study suggests that in certain cases of autism, rising levels of this molecule can trigger a harmful biochemical process.
Researchers discovered that nitric oxide can attach to a protective protein called TSC2 through a process known as S-nitrosylation. This modification marks TSC2 for removal from the cell. Normally, TSC2 acts as a critical brake on a major cellular control system called mTOR, which manages cell growth and protein production. When TSC2 levels drop due to this modification, its braking effect weakens. Consequently, mTOR activity surges beyond normal levels, potentially disrupting how neurons function and communicate.
The team, led by Prof. Haitham Amal, successfully interrupted this chain reaction in two ways. First, they used drugs to lower nitric oxide production in neurons, which restored normal TSC2 levels and mTOR activity. Second, they engineered a version of the TSC2 protein that resisted nitric oxide modification, which also prevented the following cellular changes. The study’s relevance was strengthened by clinical samples from children with ASD, including those with SHANK3 mutations (突变) and idiopathic (特发性) autism. These samples showed the same pattern: reduced TSC2 and increased mTOR activity.
By identifying this specific nitric oxide-TSC2-mTOR connection, the research provides a clearer biological map for understanding cellular imbalances in autism. It suggests that developing nitric oxide inhibitors could be a promising direction for future research and, eventually, more targeted therapies aimed at restoring normal signaling in the brain.
28. The underlined word “fine-tune” in Paragraph 1 probably means _______.
A. adjust B. create
C. speed up D. shut down
29. What happens when nitric oxide attaches to TSC2?
A. TSC2 helps control cell growth.
B. TSC2 strengthens the mTOR system.
C. TSC2 gets removed from the cell.
D. TSC2 helps neurons communicate better.
30. What can be learned about how the team stopped the chain reaction?
A. They used drugs to test on clinical samples.
B. They targeted different points in the process.
C. They focused on reducing mTOR activity first.
D. They changed the TSC2 protein into a new form.
31. What does the research suggest for future autism treatment?
A. Replacing TSC2 protein might be an option.
B. More studies are needed to confirm the findings.
C. The link between molecules needs to be identified.
D. New drugs should be developed to fix brain communication.

For years, researchers have pointed to a potential upside of Antarctic melting: as glaciers melt, iron trapped in the ice would be released into the ocean, fueling algae (海藻) blooms that absorb carbon dioxide. This process, known as iron fertilization, was seen as a rare positive feedback in a warming world.
However, new research from Rutgers University challenges that assumption. In the most precise measurement to date, scientists found that melt-water from an Antarctic ice shelf contributes far less iron to the surrounding ocean than previously believed. The study, published in Communications Earth and Environment, raises questions about current climate models.
The Southern Ocean supports abundant phytoplankton (浮游植物) growth, which forms the foundation of the Antarctic food web. These microscopic plants feed krill, which sustain penguins, seals, and whales. As they grow, phytoplankton absorb massive amounts of carbon dioxide, making this region the world’s largest oceanic carbon sink.
Until now, scientists’ understanding of iron sources came mainly from computer models. In 2022, researchers traveled aboard an icebreaker to West Antarctica’s Dotson Ice Shelf to collect direct measurements. They sampled seawater at points where it flows into and out of cavities beneath the ice shelf.
Back in the lab, scientists measured iron concentrations and analyzed isotopic (同位素的) ratios to trace the iron’s origin. The results were unexpected. Melt-water accounted for only about 10% of the dissolved iron flowing out of the ice cavity (洞). The majority came from deep ocean water (62%) and sediments on the continental shelf (28%).
“Roughly 90% of the dissolved iron coming out of the ice shelf cavity comes from deep waters and sediments outside the cavity, not from melt-water,” said lead author Venkatesh Chinni.
The isotopic data also pointed to processes beneath the glacier itself. A liquid melt-water layer lacking dissolved oxygen appears to help dissolve iron oxides in bedrock, potentially releasing more iron than melting ice shelves do.
The findings challenge long-held assumptions about iron sources in the Southern Ocean as the planet warms. “Our claim is that the melt-water itself carries very little iron,” said principal investigator Rob Sherrell. He noted that most iron comes from bedrock erosion, not from the ice driving sea level rise, a conclusion many scientists may find surprising.
32. What assumption does the new research challenge?
A. Melt-water releases large amounts of iron. B. Iron in ocean helps slow warming.
C. Antarctic melting matters for climate. D. Algae blooms absorb large amounts of CO₂.
33. Why do scientists focus on iron levels in the Southern Ocean?
A. Because iron is a nutrient.
B. Because iron is vital for plant and animal growth.
C. Because iron levels affect climate model accuracy.
D. Because iron supports carbon-absorbing phytoplankton.
34. What did the new study find about the source of iron in the Southern Ocean?
A. Deep ocean water is not the main iron source. B. Sediments contribute less iron than melt-water.
C. Melt-water plays a minor role in iron supply. D. The ice itself releases more iron than expected.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Iron’s Importance to Ocean’s Carbon Sink B. Study: Antarctic Iron Comes from Elsewhere
C. Iron’s Role in Southern Ocean Ecosystem D. Iron Data: Key to Climate Models

Micro-connections: The Small Interactions That Matter
Many of us, especially introverts, avoid small talk with strangers in daily life. However, brief and kind interactions with strangers and acquaintances, known as micro-connections, carry great value.
____36____ Micro-connections refer to short, shared moments, such as greeting passers-by, chatting with baristas (咖啡吧服务员), thanking servers, or complimenting others. Despite being tiny, these moments are far more meaningful than people think.
Today, society is highly connected digitally but faces rising loneliness and division. People increasingly stay indoors and complete tasks online, reducing chances of communicating with strangers. ____37____
Why are micro-connections valuable? They effectively fight loneliness: studies show over 40% of U.S. adults feel lonely, and micro-connections help ease this. Such interactions lift one’s mood by increasing feel-good hormones and reducing stress. ____38____ Besides, micro-connections strengthen our sense of belonging and safety. They allow people to share deeper thoughts with less emotional risk. Strangers often provide new information, exposing us to different views and broadening our horizons. Moreover, they increase trust and strengthen the whole community.
____39____ We don’t need to be outgoing to practice micro-connections — introverts can also benefit. First, put ourselves in social situations where we might meet others. ____40____ Then, when we are comfortable, use the QUICK method: ask questions, find common ground, and show kindness. Repeated practice helps us become comfortable again. In short, these small interactions can improve mental health, reduce loneliness and build a warmer society.
A. What exactly are micro-connections?
B. How do micro-connections affect our mental well-being?
C. Therefore, micro-connections are particularly important.
D. Start small with simple gestures like smiles or greetings.
E. How can we make the most of micro-connections in daily life?
F. They also improve others’ mood, creating a two-way positive effect.
G. Meanwhile, distrust grows, and people rarely interact with those who are different.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do — mine was Mrs White.
I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. I would bring back what I wrote, and she would look at it and see that there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a “Good!” was scrawled (潦草地写), which would make my heart soar with happiness. But it worried my mother, so one day when she went in to meet Mrs White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes.
And my mother said Mrs White said — The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about forming sentences. I don’t want to dampen that enthusiasm with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait. The wonder of words won’t ... And what my mother gave me was the gist of what she could remember. The rest I added in. Because I grew up learning to use words with loving confidence like that.
And it occurs to me that if Mrs White had used her red pen more precisely, I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather extraordinary teacher — to exercise such red-pen-restraint. To allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression flower — however faultily — like that. Because to bloom is better than not to bloom. And a bud once nipped (掐) never opens. May we all be so kind ...
I used to misspell “beautiful” a lot. I never could quite remember that the e went before the a. It exasperated (使气愤) my teacher in high school no end. Eventually the e’s and a’s settled into their right places of their own accord. I’m glad I didn’t wait on them though.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸相应位置作答。

【答案】24. C 25. D 26. B 27. A
【解析】

C
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. B 31. D

【答案】32. A 33. D 34. C 35. B

根据第一段“For years, researchers have pointed to a potential upside of Antarctic melting: as glaciers melt, iron trapped in the ice would be released into the ocean, fueling algae (海藻) blooms that absorb carbon dioxide.(多年来,研究人员一直指出南极冰川融化可能带来的一个积极影响:随着冰川融化,冰层中所含的铁会释放到海洋中,从而促进藻类的大量繁殖,而藻类能够吸收二氧化碳)”以及第二段“However, new research from Rutgers University challenges that assumption. In the most precise measurement to date, scientists found that melt-water from an Antarctic ice shelf contributes far less iron to the surrounding ocean than previously believed. The study, published in Communications Earth and Environment, raises questions about current climate models.(然而,罗格斯大学的新研究对这一假设提出了质疑。在迄今为止最为精确的测量中,科学家们发现,来自南极冰架的融水向周围海洋输送的铁元素量远低于此前的预期。该研究发表在《地球与环境通讯》杂志上,引发了对当前气候模型的质疑)”可知,它挑战的核心假设是“融水是铁的主要来源”或者“融水会大量释放铁”这一论断。故选A。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The Southern Ocean supports abundant phytoplankton (浮游植物) growth, which forms the foundation of the Antarctic food web. These microscopic plants feed krill, which sustain penguins, seals, and whales. As they grow, phytoplankton absorb massive amounts of carbon dioxide, making this region the world’s largest oceanic carbon sink.(南冰洋为大量的浮游植物提供了适宜的生长环境,这些浮游植物构成了南极食物网的基础。这些微小的植物为磷虾提供食物,而磷虾又为企鹅、海豹和鲸鱼提供营养来源。随着它们的生长,浮游植物会吸收大量的二氧化碳,使得该地区成为世界上最大的海洋碳汇)”可知,科学家关注南冰洋中的铁含量是因为铁能为能够吸收碳的浮游植物提供养分。故选D。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Melt-water accounted for only about 10% of the dissolved iron flowing out of the ice cavity (洞).(融水所携带的铁元素仅占从冰洞中流出的铁元素总量的约10%)”和第六段““Roughly 90% of the dissolved iron coming out of the ice shelf cavity comes from deep waters and sediments outside the cavity, not from melt-water,” said lead author Venkatesh Chinni.(该研究的第一作者文卡特什·钦尼表示:“从冰架空洞中流出的溶解铁物质中,约90%来自空洞外部的深层海水和沉积物,而非来自融水。”)”
【答案】36. A 37. G 38. F 39. E 40. D

【答案】范文
Thirty years later, I attended a local education seminar as a famous writer. As I walked into the venue, a familiar figure caught my eye — an elderly lady whom I recognized immediately as Mrs White. My heart raced with excitement. I approached her tentatively, and when she turned around, those warm eyes lit up with recognition. “Li Hua? Is that really you?” she asked softly. I nodded eagerly, introducing myself as the little girl who used to misspell “beautiful” as “baeutiful” but never lost her love for writing, all thanks to her.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I hugged Mrs White tightly. I told her how her red-pen-restraint had shaped my life, allowing me to express freely without fear of mistakes. She smiled gently, patting my back. “I always knew you’ d make good use of words,” she said. “Spelling can be fixed, but passion can’t be restored once crushed.” Before we parted, I handed her a copy of my latest book, inscribed with “To Mrs White — Thank you for letting my words bloom.” As I watched her leave, I realized her kindness wasn’t just a memory; it was a gift that had kept on giving.
