Chicago-based Jim Bachor is an expert in fixing up poholes (坑洼) on the streets by filling them up with his beautiful and strong mosaics (马赛克).
In fact, Bachor’s career as a pohole artist began with a trip to the ancient city of Pompeii in Italy, where he learned mosaic could remain for a long time, standing the test of time. The tour guide pointed at a 2,000-year-old artwork and said that although it had gone through so many years, the marble and glass pieces had not fadeD. The realization of the artwork’s staying power blew Bachor away. A few months later he was in Italy learning the secrets of ancient mosaic art and he pursued it as a hobby for a few years.
In May of 2013 he got the idea of applying his skill to fixing an annoying pohole in his neighborhood. Bachor said. “There was a long-standing pohole right outside our house, which the city repeatedly filled with concrete, yet it kept reappearing.” So, what I did was that I created a special piece of art for that pohole.”
However, creating pohole mosaics was quite different from doing them in the comfort of his own studio. For instance, it was challenging to protect them for a few hours before they became firm. One day, while he accompanied his sons to their soccer practice, the training cones (锥桶) inspired him. Jim Bachor placed them around the pohole mosaics to act as temporary traffic markers, guiding traffic around them.
Bachor started doing pohole mosaics in his neighborhood with many of his neighbors coming to help him, and as his work started getting more attention, he even did some projects in other major cities.
4. What inspired Jim Bachor to be a pohole mosaic artist?
A. The secrets of creating mosaic. B. The beauty of Pompeii’s artworks.
C. Suggestions from Pompeii’s tour guide. D. Pompeii mosaics’ long-lasting capacity.
5. Why did Bachor started his pohole mosaic art in 2013?
A. To fulfill a task from the city. B. To show up his artistic skills.
C. To fix a recurring pohole issue. D. To raise people’s awareness of art.
6. How did Jim Bachor protect his pohole mosaics from damage?
A. He used soccer training cones. B. He asked his sons to help him.
C He hired workers to direct traffic. D. He applied a quick-drying material.
7. What can we learn from Jim Bachor’s story?
A. Art needs to be passed down. B. Art can solve practical issues.
C. Creativity is the key to success. D. Ancient artworks are the most precious.

Most people agree that transforming from fossil fuels to sustainable electricity, whether directly or indirectly, is the best strategy for human beings. However, some industries face significant challenges in this shift. Aviation (航空) is one such area. Batteries are too heavy, and hydrogen (氢), made from clean power, has some difficulties in moving and storing it.
However, a new approach could offer a solution by producing fuels from CO2 waste generated by various industrial processes. A recent study published in Nature by Dr. Aldo Steinfeld of ETH Zurich and his colleagues illustrates how these fuels might be created from thin air. Scientists at ETH Zurich have created a system that can emulate the natural process of photosynthesis (光合作用), where plants change CO2 and water into energy by using sunlight.
The system consists of three stages: first, it takes in CO2 and water from the atmosphere; second, it uses sunlight to heat a material, which reacts with both CO2 and water, then making new gases; and finally, it transforms these gases into a liquid fuel.
The team’s device was installed on the roof of ETH’s Machine Laboratory Building. While the current output is small, the experiment demonstrates the practicability of the concept. Rough estimates suggest that completely replacing the global aviation fuel market through this method would require about 45,000 km² of suitable land. That sounds a lot, but it’s just about 0.5% of the Sahara Desert’s area.
To promote the adoption of this air-produced fuel, policy measures such as taxes on traditional fuels and legal support will be necessary. These measures could encourage the use of more sustainable aviation fuels. Anyway, Dr. Steinfeld’s research that turns air into fuel holds great potential for making flying more eco-friendly. It not only reduces reliance on fossil fuels but also contributes to the fight against climate change by offering a sustainable alternative for air travel.
8. What is a main challenge in using sustainable electricity for aviation?
A. Costs of traditional fuels. B. Efficiency of labor force.
C. Transportation of clean energy. D. Shortage of advanced technology.
9. What does the underlined word “emulate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Copy. B. Establish. C. Adapt. D. Speed.
10. What can be inferred about the team’s device from paragraph 4?
A. It must be set up on roofs of buildings.
B. It is likely to take the place of traditional fuels.
C. Its concept is impractical for use in real-world.
D. Its output will increase if it is installed in deserts.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward Dr. Steinfeld’s research?
A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Tolerant. D. Supportive.
D
“Can you finish the work by the end of the day?” This question might cause anxiety for many employees. However, recent research indicates that shorter deadlines can actually help some individuals to complete tasks more efficiently and perceive their workload as less frightening.
In a study focused on retirement planning, volunteers completed a brief online survey under two different deadline conditions. One group had seven days to finish the survey, while the other was given 14 days. The researchers discovered that those facing the longer deadline often viewed the task as more difficult. Although participants with the extended deadline initially invested more time and resources, they were also more likely to procrastinate (拖延) and less likely to complete the assignment compared to those with shorter deadlines.
Recognizing that people frequently deal with multiple deadlines, researchers explored how individuals manage various tasks at the same time. The findings found a mental tendency: individuals often delay important tasks in favor of urgent but less significant ones. For example, many delay routine medical check-ups — crucial for health — in favor of rushing to a store for a limited-time sale. This occurs because important tasks feel more complex and distant, while urgent tasks provide immediate satisfaction.
These patterns have significant results for managers and others involved in setting deadlines. Understanding these mental processes can help find strategies to enhance task completion rates. Short deadlines for urgent tasks tend to draw attention more effectively, leading to higher completion rates and reduced procrastination. On the other hand, longer deadlines can lead to excessive careful thought or distraction, resulting in incomplete work.
However, it’s essential to recognize that longer deadlines may still be necessary for complex tasks, particularly when external factors, such as resource availability or cooperation, require additional time for proper completion. In such cases, a balanced approach is crucial: setting realistic deadlines that account for both urgency and complexity can lead to improved outcomes. By recognizing the minor differences of human motivation, individuals and organizations can develop effective strategies for task management.
12. According to recent research, what may shorter deadlines bring about?
A. Increased stress. B. Higher efficiency.
C. Reduced workload. D. Slower completion.
13. Why do people tend to delay important tasks for urgent ones?
A. Urgent tasks offer instant rewards. B. Urgent tasks are more complicated.
C. Important tasks are less challenging. D. Important tasks needs multi-tasking.
14. How should managers set proper deadlines to improve outcome?
A. Set all tasks with shorter deadlines. B. Prioritize resources and cooperation.
C. Balance task urgency and complexity. D. Extend deadlines for significant tasks.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Role of Urgency in Task Completion B. Strategies for Managing Various Deadlines
C. Influences of Procrastination on Work Quality D. The Power of Deadlines in Task Management

In a small village of Somerset, England, there lived a boy named Jack and his beloved grandfather, an experienced sailor. The wise old man had seen the world and he often told Jack “My boy, remember, no matter how tough things get, as long as you have faith, nothing is impossible”. These words were Jack’s guiding light, especially in the dark days after his grandfather’s passing away.
Luckily, Jack had a companion with him, a horse named lightning. Jack and lightning grew up together, exploring the forest and playing by the river. They were inseparable friends. One day, Jack set out on an adventure with lightning. As they went further into the forest, a sudden storm came. When lightning tried to get away from a falling tree, he accidentally stepped into a hidden swamp (沼泽). The mud was so thick that lightning got stuck, unable to free himself no matter how hard he tried.
Panicked, Jack tried to pull lightning out with his own hands, but the swamp was too strong. He ran back to the village seeking for help. Swiftly, a group of villagers followed Jack to the swamp, their faces turning concerned as they saw the half- buried lightning. From their past experience, the villagers were all aware that a situation like this meant death for the trapped animal. Yet, they still tried to use ropes to pull lightning out, but in vain.
As the villagers returned to the village, Jack remained by the swamp, looking at lightning. The once strong horse now stood with his head lowered, his eyes filled with a mixture of fear and helplessness as he sank deeper into the mud. Jack, determined to save his friend, recalled his grandfather’s words. Closing his eyes, Jack concentrated, and then a voice echoed in his mind: “Nothing is impossible. Use life to awake life.” Inspired, he thought, “What if I have the other horses run around the swamp to give lightning the strength to keep fighting?”

C. He hired workers to direct traffic. D. He applied a quick-drying material.

To promote the adoption of this air-produced fuel policy measures such as taxes on traditional fuels and legal support will be necessary.
A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Tolerant. D. Supportive.

【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. D

With regained hope, Jack rushed back to the village. His heart pounded as he explained his plan to the villagers. Seeing the determination in Jack’s eyes, they agreed to help. Together, they led the horses to the swamp, and they rode the horses to circle around Lightning. The horses’ energy seemed to transfer to lightning, his eyes filled with a shining will to live. Lightning struggled and attempted for several times but he failed to break free. However, Lightning didn’t give up and Jack’s faith and the horses’ circling never stopped. Jack kept shouting, “You can do it, Lightning I believe in you.” His encouragement rang out over the swamp.
On the seventh try, Lightning jumped out of the swamp. Like a flash of lightning, he made it Jack ran over and hugged Lightning’s neck, with tears of joy and gratitude. The villagers burst into cheers, their faces lighting up with relief at the miracle. They surrounded Jack and Lightning, praising Jack for his determined faith. Bowing deeply, Jack expressed his heartfelt thanks to the villagers. From then on, the bond between Jack and Lightning grew stronger, and their story of faith became a legend throughout the village. And Jack’s understanding of his grandfather’s wisdom deepened: with faith and unity, any challenge could be overcome.
