If you are hiking with a friend who is overweight, you may hear them say that the hills look steeper (更陡峭的) and the distances look farther away than what they really are. Is your friend lazy? Actually, this is just what the world looks like in their eyes.
Scientists from Colorado State University show that being overweight distorts perception (扭曲知觉). They think distances are farther away than they actually are.
In one study, scientists asked 66 people of different weights and sizes to say how far away a traffic cone (交通围标) was. In fact, the cone was 25m away. Those who were about 57kg thought it was just 15m from them, but those who weighed about 146kg saw it as being 30m away.
So far from being crazy. Overweight people simply see the world differently when thinking about exercise. The heavy weight can feel like a load (装载物) to carry.
“If you find yourself out hiking with a heavy backpack, hills are going to seem steeper, distances are going to look farther, and a gap across a river is going to look bigger.” Jessica Witt from Colorado State University told the Guardian.
It’s this idea that if you have to make more of an effort to climb that hill because you are carrying this heavy backpack, the hill is going to look more challenging (有挑战性的).
“You are not seeing that hill as it is. You are seeing the world through your ability to act. You have less ability because you are having to carry this backpack.” Witt said. Sometimes the steepest hills exist in the mind before the feet ever feel them.
36. Why might an overweight hiker see a hill as steeper than it really is?
A. Because they don’t want to exercise.
B. Because they need glasses.
C. Because they’re not good at hiking.
D. Because their body makes challenges seem bigger.
37. From the third paragraph we can know that ________.
A. heavier people guessed distances more correctly
B. everyone saw the cone at the same distance
C. people’s weight affected (影响) how far they thought the cone was
D. people who were about 57kg thought the traffic cone was just 30m from them
38. Jessica Witt compared carrying extra body weight to ________.
A. hiking with a heavy backpack B. going uphill on a bicycle
C. wearing uncomfortable shoes D. walking in bad weather
39. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A. Everyone sees the world the same way.
B. People see things based on what they can easily do.
C. Only strong people see things correctly.
D. Your eyes change when you exercise.
40. The writer’s main purpose in writing this passage is to tell ________.
A. hiking is harder for overweight people
B. the importance of being the right weight and size
C. everyone should lose weight
D. we should understand that people experience challenges differently
C
The next morning, we went to chat to the other slaves (奴隶) before they went to work. One of them was carrying food to the locked hut (木屋).
“Are you going to feed the dogs?” Tom asked him. “No, Master. This is for the runaway slave.” So we were right! Jim was in the hut.
We started digging the tunnel (隧道) to the hut that night. It was hard and it took us two nights to finish it. We came up under Jim’s bed. He was very surprised to see us. “Hello, Jim! We’re going to rescue (救) you.”
Tom said. “But we aren’t ready to do it yet. You’ll have to wait a couple of days. Don’t worry! You’ll soon be free!”
Then we crawled (爬) through the tunnel back to our bedroom. We sat on the bed and talked about a rescue plan.
“I’m going to write a letter to Uncle.” Tom said. “Of course I won’t sign it.”
“I’m going to warn him that somebody is planning to steal (偷) the runaway slave.” “Why are you going to do that, Tom?”
“Well, Huck, if Uncle Silas knows, he’ll try to stop the thieves. The adventure (冒险) will be more exciting if somebody tries to stop us.”
I didn’t understand why we had to look for trouble but I said nothing. Tom always knew best. So he wrote the letter and I climbed out of the window and put it under the front door.
Uncle Silas found it in the morning. After reading it, he went out without finishing his breakfast. At half past eleven we climbed out of the bedroom window and went to the hut. “Come on, Jim!” Tom said, “Huck, you go first. Then you, Jim. I will go last.”
We heard someone opening the door of the hut. A man shouted. “He’s gone! The thieves have stolen the runaway slave!”
We quickly crawled out the other end and ran towards the fence (篱笆). I turned around and saw a crowd of men outside the hut. They were carrying guns and looking for the thief.
I climbed over the fence and Jim followed me. Tom was right behind us. Unluckily, he caught his trousers on a nail. He pulled them free but the man heard the noise. They pointed their guns at us.
“Answer! Or we’ll shoot (开枪).” they shouted.
We didn’t answer. We ran and then the men started shooting. We ran faster. We ran to the river, jumped into the canoe and started paddling (划桨). The men were still looking for us but we were safe on the raft.
“Jim! You’re a free man!” I said.
Jim was very happy. We were all happy.
“It was a great adventure.” Tom said. “I even got a bullet (子弹) in my leg!”
It was true. His leg was bleeding badly. Jim and I found some old shirts and wrapped them round Tom’s leg. “We must get a doctor.” Jim said.
“No! I don’t want a doctor.” Tom shouted.
But I agreed with Jim. “Tom Sawyer! You’ve got a bullet in your leg and you need to see a doctor. I’m going to find one.”

Healthy eating is very important for teenagers, because it helps us grow up and keep us strong. Recently, No. 1 Middle School in Wuxi has started a “Healthy Eating” initiative(倡议)to teach students how to eat healthily and form good eating habits.
The school found that many students have bad eating habits: some students skip breakfast(不吃早餐), some eat too much junk food like fried chicken and potato chips, and some don’t like eating vegetables and fruit. These bad habits are bad for their health. For example, skipping breakfast can make students feel tired in class and affect their study. Eating too much junk food can make them fat and cause health problems.
To help students change their bad eating habits, the school did a lot of things. First, the school held a healthy eating speech. A doctor came to the school and told students about the importance of healthy eating and what kind of food is good for their bodies. Second, the school improved the food in the dining hall. It added more vegetables, fruit and whole grains(粗粮), and reduced the amount of fried food and sweet food. Third, the school made a “Healthy Eating Handbook” and gave it to every student. The handbook tells students how to make a healthy eating plan, like eating breakfast every day, eating more vegetables and fruit, and drinking more water.
The initiative has been very successful. Many students have changed their bad eating habits. They start to eat breakfast every day, and they eat less junk food. Some students even start to bring healthy lunch from home, like rice, vegetables and chicken. A student said, “I used to skip breakfast and eat potato chips every day. Now I eat breakfast and more vegetables. I feel more energetic in class, and my study is getting better.”
The school said it will keep the “Healthy Eating” initiative going on. It will hold more activities about healthy eating and keep improving the dining hall food. The school hopes all students can form good eating habits and keep healthy.

八、书面表达(本大题共10分)
Looking back on the past half term, Ive got wonderful memories and joy from two great things: travelling and reading.
When it comes to travelling, I have toured Xian. Its rich culture is second to none, especially the amazing ancient city wall. Though the trip was short, I admired not only the beauty of the city but also its long history.
As for reading, I have read some novels. My favourite book is Gulliver’s Travels. It is full of adventures, and I felt like exploring the world with Gulliver together when reading it. Reading it has taught me to stay curious towards different ways of life.
In the future, I plan to explore the world by reading more books and visiting more historic attractions in person.
