In my ninth-grade writing class last year, I met a cowboy who saved his town, a strict father who demanded his son earn straight A’s, and a modern-day Juliet who died of heartbreak after her parents rejected the love of her young life. More than once, I found myself wondering just how my students, who’d created these people, knew their subjects so well.
But things were different for their first essay, which was about the question: “Why is writing important?” Most of the essays filled less than one page, and few contained a sentence that could be interpreted as a thesis (论点) statement. I was shocked. Then I realized that the problem was the question itself. They could have written pages on the necessity of computers, but writing, in and of itself, simply didn’t strike them as important. This would have to change.
As a new unit started, I asked everyone to write a persuasive piece on a health-related topic of their choice. This time they found the exercise much more interesting. For the next two assignments, a personal-narrative unit followed by a creative-writing workshop, I only required that the piece meet the specifications of its genre (体裁) and that it contain a thesis. The results were staggering. The students took on diverse topics and turned in stories, 10 to 20 pages each, with characters that broadened my view and touched my heart.
I walked into class believing that writing is important as a means of communication. However, my students demonstrated something more important to me. When the final bell rang in June, I walked away with a yearbook full of messages about writing’s most powerful significance — the ability to connect people, to put us in another’s skin, to teach us what it means to be human.
4. Who are the people mentioned at the beginning of paragraph 1?
A. Ninth graders. B. Students’ parents.
C. Modern writers. D. Fictional characters.
5. Why did the students perform poorly in writing their first essay?
A. They were not given enough time. B. They had a very limited vocabulary.
C. They misunderstood the question. D. They had little interest in the topic.
6. What does the underlined word “staggering” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Mixed. B. Amazing. C. Similar. D. Disturbing.
7. What does the author’s experience show?
A. Teaching is learning. B. Still waters run deep.
C. Knowledge is power. D. Practice makes perfect.
D 5. D 6. B 7. A
根据文章第一段中“In my ninth-grade writing class last year, I met a cowboy who saved his town, a strict father who demanded his son earn straight A’s, and a modern-day Juliet who died of heartbreak after her parents rejected the love of her young life. More than once, I found myself wondering just how my students, who’d created these people, knew their subjects so well.
根据文章第二段中“Most of the essays filled less than one page, and few contained a sentence that could be interpreted as a thesis (论点) statement. I was shocked. Then I realized that the problem was the question itself. They could have written pages on the necessity of computers, but writing, in and of itself, simply didn’t strike them as important. (大多数文章篇幅不足一页,几乎没有包含可被视为论点的句子。我感到震惊。随后我意识到问题出在题目本身。他们本可以就电脑的必要性写下数页内容,但写作本身根本没让他们觉得重要)”可推知,学生们在写第一篇作文时表现不佳,是因为他们对写作这个话题本身不感兴趣。故选D。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第三段中划线词下文“The students took on diverse topics and turned in stories, 10 to 20 pages each, with characters that broadened my view and touched my heart. (学生们选取了多样的主题,交上来的故事每篇都有10到20页长,其中的人物拓宽了我的视野,也触动了我的心)”可推知,此处指学生们写出了内容丰富、打动人心的故事,与之前的表现形成强烈对比。划线词“staggering”意为“令人惊叹的、惊人的”,与B选项“Amazing (惊人的)”语义一致。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,再根据文章最后一段中“I walked into class believing that writing is important as a means of communication. However, my students demonstrated something more important to me. When the final bell rang in June, I walked away with a yearbook full of messages about writing’s most powerful significance — the ability to connect people, to put us in another’s skin, to teach us what it means to be human. 故选A。
C
How can classic literary works stay lively in the digital age? A 17-year-old high school student from Chengdu, Sichuan, named Wu Yaduo, has found a wonderful way to answer this question.
Using her iPad and creative drawing skills, Wu turns stories from famous classics into hand-drawn animated (动画的) videos. These works include well-known books like A Dream of Red Mansions, Water Margin and The Peony Pavilion, as well as life stories of famous poets such as Li Bai of the Tang Dynasty. Her videos have won tens of thousands of followers online and got millions of views. Wu thinks these classics are timeless because they talk about human emotions and social themes that never go out of date.
However, she notices many students are not interested in these works just because they have to learn them for school. So Wu wants to bridge the gap between classics and modern life, making them more relatable and interesting for young people. Therefore, she usually chooses texts from her high school Chinese textbooks as the starting point.
In her creations, Wu combines text and sound cleverly. For example, one of her works about A Dream of Red Mansions was inspired by a sad song from an indie band She drew the flourishing Daguanyuan, or the Grand View Garden, and the sad scene of the family’s downfall at the same time to create a strong emotional impact. Unlike traditional story-telling, her videos are full of bright colors and striking visual effects, as she loves experimental movies and artworks.
Though Wu has received much support, she feels sorry that she can’t perfectly turn the images in her mind into drawings. But she still looks forward to creating more works to bring classics closer to daily life.
8. What do we know about Wu Yaduo’s animated videos of classic works?
A. She pays more attention to sound than visuals.
B. She takes band songs as main creative materials.
C. She combines traditional tools with electronic devices.
D. She uses digital tools and drawing skills to show classics.
9. Why does Wu use materials from textbooks in her works?
A. To choose the easiest content to animate.
B. To make students interested in the classics.
C. To show the importance of classics at school.
D. To explain the classic texts in a simpler way.
10. Which of the following best describes Wu Yaduo’s animated videos?
A. Creative and vivid. B. Plain and thoughtful.
C. Serious and traditional. D. Popular and demanding.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. A student gains popularity online by creating digital content.
B. Classic literature is becoming less interesting to modern students.
C. A student creates animations to make classics connect the youth.
D. Digital technology offers a new way to link traditional culture.
D 9. B 10. A 11. C

Language is embedded in almost every aspect of the way we interact with the world. It’s hard to imagine what it would be like not to have it. What would be the result if we didn’t have names for things or didn’t have experience talking about things that hadn’t actually happened? Would we be able to think? What would our thoughts be like?
The answer to the question of whether thought is possible without language depends on what you mean by “thought”. Can you experience impressions and feelings without language? Yes, and very few would argue otherwise. But there is a difference between being able to experience “pain” and possessing the concept “pain”. Most would say true thought involves having the concept.
Many artists and scientists say they do not use words to solve problems, but images. The autistic author Temple Grandin, in explaining how she thinks with images rather than in language, says that concepts for her are collections of images.
Of course, Grandin has language, and knows how to use it, so it is hard to say how much of her thinking has been influenced by it, but that there are people who are deficient in the ability to use language and think in the way she describes.
There is evidence that deaf people cut off from language possess the ability to think before being exposed to language. Also, the sign languages developed by deaf students without language models display the kind of thinking that goes far beyond mere sensory impression or practical problem solving.
However, while it appears that we can indeed think without language, there are certain kinds of thinking that are made possible by language. Language gives us symbols we can use to fix ideas, reflect on them, and hold them up for observation. It allows for a level of abstract reasoning we wouldn’t have otherwise. The philosopher Peter Carruthers has argued that there is a type of inner language thinking that allows us to bring our own thoughts into awareness. We may be able to think without language, but language lets us know we are thinking.
12. What does the author intend to show with the experience of Temple Grandin?
A. People without language can’t think.
B. Language has no influence on thinking.
C. Some people may think in a non-language way.
D. Autistic people have a special way of using language.
13. How does the author develop the argument that thought can exist without language?
A. By tracing the history of linguistic theories. B. By providing multiple counterexamples (反例).
C. By conducting a controlled experiment. D. By relying on a single personal story.
14. What could we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Language makes abstract reasoning easier.
B. Language is merely useful for reflection.
C. Language is a must for people to understand the world.
D. Language restricts people’s ability to think visually.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Thinking Without Language B. The Power of Abstract Reasoning
C. How Language Shapes Our World D. Temple Grandin’s Unique Experience
C 13. B 14. A 15. A
根据第三段“Many artists and scientists say they do not use words to solve problems, but images. The autistic author Temple Grandin, in explaining how she thinks with images rather than in language, says that concepts for her are collections of images.(许多艺术家和科学家说,他们不用语言来解决问题,而是用图像。自闭症作家Temple Grandin在解释她如何用图像而不是语言思考时说,对她来说,概念是图像的集合)”可知,Temple Grandin通过图像而不是语言来思考,这表明有些人可能以非语言的方式进行思考。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Of course, Grandin has language, and knows how to use it, so it is hard to say how much of her thinking has been influenced by it, but that there are people who are deficient in the ability to use language and think in the way she describes.(当然,Grandin会使用语言,也知道如何使用它,所以很难说她的思考有多少受到了语言的影响,但确实有一些人在使用语言的能力上有缺陷,并以她描述的方式思考)”以及第五段“There is evidence that deaf people cut off from language possess the ability to think before being exposed to language. Also, the sign languages developed by deaf students without language models display the kind of thinking that goes far beyond mere sensory impression or practical problem solving.(有证据表明,与语言隔绝的聋人在接触语言之前就具备思考的能力。此外,没有语言模型的聋哑学生开发的手语所显示的思维类型远远超出了单纯的感官印象或实际问题的解决)”可知,作者通过提供多个反例来论证没有语言也可以进行思考这一观点。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, while it appears that we can indeed think without language, there are certain kinds of thinking that are made possible by language. Language gives us symbols we can use to fix ideas, reflect on them, and hold them up for observation. It allows for a level of abstract reasoning we wouldn’t have otherwise.(然而,尽管我们似乎确实可以在没有语言的情况下进行思考,但某些类型的思考是由语言促成的。语言为我们提供了可以用来固定想法、反思它们并展示它们以供观察的符号。它允许我们进行一种我们原本无法进行的抽象推理)”可知,语言使得抽象推理变得更加容易。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“The answer to the question of whether thought is possible without language depends on what you mean by “thought”.(在没有语言的情况下是否可以思考的问题的答案取决于你对“思考”的定义)”以及最后一段“However, while it appears that we can indeed think without language, there are certain kinds of thinking that are made possible by language.(然而,尽管我们似乎确实可以在没有语言的情况下进行思考,但某些类型的思考是由语言促成的)”可知,文章主要探讨了在没有语言的情况下是否可以进行思考的问题,故A项“Thinking Without Language(没有语言的思考)”是本文的最佳标题。故选A项。

Factoring in the biting wind, I knew the temperature was below zero. The bitter cold cut through my Californian sensibilities, as well as my enthusiasm as a tourist, so I moved to the nearest door for warmth and found myself in a station.
I settled onto one of the public benches with a steaming cup of coffee——waiting for feeling to return to my fingers and toes——and relaxed to watch the people around.
Several tables of diners spilled out into the great hall from the American Restaurant, and smells of the food caused me to consider an early dinner. I observed a man seated nearby and, from the longing in his eyes, realized that he, too, noticed the tasty food. His skinny body, chapped (皲裂的) hands and shabby clothes nearly shouted, “Homeless, homeless!”
I wondered how long it had been since he last ate.
Half expecting him to approach me for a handout (施舍物), I almost welcomed such a request. He never did. The longer I took in the scene, the crueler his situation seemed. My head and heart experienced a’ silent war, one telling me to mind my own business, and the other urging a trip to the food court on his behalf.
While my internal debate went on, a well-dressed young couple approached him. “Excuse me, sir,” the husband began. “My wife and I just finished eating, and our appetites weren’t as big as we thought. We hate to waste good food. Can you help us out and put this to use?” He extended a large container.
“God bless you both,” came the grateful reply.
Pleased, yet upset by my own lack of action, I continued to watch. The man rearranged the soup crackers, inspected the sandwich and stirred the salad dressing. Then, slowly he lifted the soup lid, cupping his hands around the steaming bowl. At last, he unwrapped the plastic spoon, filled it to overflowing, lifted it toward his mouth and, all of a sudden, stopped short.
I turned my head to follow his narrow-eyed gaze.

He placed the still-warm bowl of soup in the old man’s hands without waiting for an answer.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Entering the hall and walking slowly in our direction was an old man. Hatless and gloveless, the elderly man was in a worn jacket, lightweight pants and open shoes. His face was blue with cold. I wasn’t alone in seeing this sad sight, but my needy neighbor was the only one doing something about it. Setting aside his meal, he jumped up and guided the elderly man to his seat. Gently, he put his worn jacket over the old man’s shoulders. “Sir,” he said, “an angel brought me this meal. I just finished eating and hate to waste good food. Can you help me out?”
He placed the still-warm bowl of soup in the old man's hands without waiting for an answer. “Sure, but only if you go halfway with me on that sandwich. It’s too much for a man my age,” the old man answered. It wasn’t easy to make my way to the food court with tears blocking my vision, but I soon returned with two large containers of hot coffee and a big box of cakes. “Excuse me,gentlemen, can you...” I left the station that day feeling warmer than I had ever thought possible.

A. Mixed. B. Amazing. C. Similar. D. Disturbing.

A. Teaching is learning. B. Still waters run deep.
C. Knowledge is power. D. Practice makes perfect.
