After that, nobody said a word and 41 filled the room for a long time. Later, my father came and asked, “Have you really looked at the drawings on your notebook?” I shook my head. Drawing on my notebook was wrong, but my sister’s 44 was true and warm. Feeling bad, I said sorry to my sister, and she smiled back at me.

It’s getting colder outside, and it’s time for the flu and cold season. Why do people get more colds and flu when it’s very cold outside?
In a new study, scientists have found the answer. It turns out that the cold air itself hurts the immune response (免疫反应) in our noses.
When a virus (病毒) goes into the nose, the nose can find it, and the cells (细胞) there begin to create billions of simple copies of themselves called extracellular vesicles (EVs细胞外小泡).
“EVs can’t divide like cells, but they can kill the viruses,” said Benjamin Bleier, the writer of the study from Harvard Medical School. “They catch the viruses as you breathe them in. Then, the viruses sticking to EVs will be thrown out from our body in the form of snot (鼻涕).”
However, when cold weather hits, the nose’s “super power” becomes less powerful. The study found that when the temperature inside the nose drops by 5°C, nearly 50 percent of the billions of EVs will be taken out of the fight. “Cold air makes you catch viruses more easily because you have lost half of your immunity (免疫力),” said Bleier.
This is why we should wear masks (口罩) in winter. “Wearing masks not only can protect us from viruses, but it’s also like wearing a sweater on the nose,” Bleier said.
In the future, Bleier expects to see the development of nasal medications “Scientists may find a way to fool the nose into thinking it has just seen a virus,” Bleier said.
51.What does the underlined word “themselves” in the third paragraph refer to?
A.The viruses. B.The noses.
C.The cells in our noses. D.The immune responses in our noses.
52.What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us?
A.What EVs are like. B.Where we can find EVs.
C.Why it is easy to lose EVs. D.How EVs get the viruses out of the body.
53.How many EVs will you lose when the temperature inside the nose drops by 5°C?
A.Fifty billion EVs. B.About half of the EVs in the nose.
C.All of the EVs in the nose. D.Five percent of the EVs in the nose.
54.What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A.EVs can help people kill all kinds of viruses.
B.EVs work in the same way as the cells in the nose.
C.Bleier doesn’t feel hopeful about the development of nasal medications.
D.The warmer we keep our noses, the better they work to fight against viruses.
55.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Why do people get more colds and flu in winter?
B.Why do people feel cold in winter?
C.How do people make noses throw out viruses?
D.How do people keep noses warm?
【答案】51.C 52.D 53.B 54.D 55.A
51.第三段指出:“the cells there begin to create billions of simple copies of themselves called extracellular vesicles (EVs 细胞外小泡).”,此句主语为the cells,细胞复制自身,因此themselves指代鼻腔内的细胞。
52.第四段指出:“They catch the viruses... the viruses sticking to EVs will be thrown out from our body in the form of snot.”,本段介绍了细胞外小泡捕捉病毒并将其排出体外的过程。
53.第五段指出:“when the temperature inside the nose drops by 5°C, nearly 50 percent of the billions of EVs will be taken out of the fight.”,50 percent对应一半,说明鼻腔降温 5℃会流失近一半细胞外小泡。
54.第五段指出:“Cold air makes you catch viruses more easily because you have lost half of your immunity.”,冷空气降低鼻腔免疫力,反之鼻子越温暖,抗病毒能力越强。

Do you have difficulty falling asleep at night? If so, here is a piece of advice for you: Listen to some soft music.
Scientists have found that soft music can help to improve sleep quality and quantity. This works for sleepers of all ages, and even for those with sleeping problems. Soft music can help us fall asleep faster, wake up less during the night and feel more rested in the morning. You may not notice the effects overnight, though. It could take as many as three weeks to see any improvements.
Why can soft music help us sleep better? The reasons aren’t clear yet. It may have something to do with the relaxing effect of a good song. Music can have real physical effects, too. Soft music can lower our heart rate and slow down our breathing. This prepares us for sleep.
Scientists say that for most people, music that has 70 beats per minute (bpm) works best. Classical, jazz and folk music(民间音乐)are usually more effective than other musical styles. Familiar songs work well, too. You may need to experiment to make your own playlists. If you are not sure how many beats a song has in a minute, you can find out by entering its title into songbpm.com. And remember to get the volume(音量)right. Make sure that the final piece is one that slowly dies down. Otherwise, you may be woken up by the sudden silence.
It is very important to get enough high-quality sleep. Before you go to bed tonight, play some soft music. Then, just prepare to be rocked off to dreamland!
56.According to the passage, whom can soft music help with sleep?
A.people of every age
B.only people under the age of 15
C.only people with sleeping problems
D.only people who are experiencing lots of stress
57.How long might it take before you notice that soft music helps you sleep better?
A.3 hours B.3 nights C.3 weeks D.3 months
58.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.All popular songs should have a relaxing effect.
B.Soft music may do harm to our physical health in the long run.
C.Lower heart rates and slower breathing can help us to fall asleep.
D.Scientists have found out exactly why soft music can help people sleep better.
59.According to the author, what should we pay attention to when playing soft music?
A.Do some interesting experiments.
B.Make sure each of the pieces has 70 beats per minute.
C.Make sure the final piece is the loudest among all.
D.Make the volume of the music neither too high nor too low.
60.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Ways to choose soft music.
B.Soft music helps improve sleep.
C.How to make a music playlist.
D.The importance of good sleep.

Scientists have discovered that some dogs can tell toys apart by what they’re used for, not just what they look like. People learn this skill when they’re kids. For example, young children may find out both a pen and a crayon can be used for writing, even if they don’t look the same. This ability was never seen in dogs before.
In the study, scientists wanted to see if dogs could tell the difference between pull toys for tugging (拉拽) and fetch (去取拿) toys like balls that are thrown and then got back— even if they’d never seen the toys. They chose dogs that are good at learning object names, mostly border collies
The scientists set up the studies in the dogs’ homes. The toys were all different in shape, size and color. When playing with a toy, owners said “pull” or “fetch” so the dogs learned which word matched which toy type. The dogs were tested on the words four weeks later.
Then, the dogs got new pull and fetch toys to play with, and owners didn’t say the words out loud. When they are asked to pick the “pull” or “fetch” toy from a pile (一堆) , the dogs chose correctly most of the time. This shows dogs can label (归类) objects in their minds by what the objects are used for.
Claudia Fugazza, the study’s lead researcher from a Hungarian university, said, “Dogs learn object names quickly and remember them for a long time, even without practice.” Next, scientists will see if dogs can guess an object’s use without being taught what it’s for.
61.How did the dogs learn the words for the toys?
A.By hearing words while playing. B.By watching other dogs play.
C.By looking at toy pictures. D.By getting food from owners.
62.What can we infer (推断) from the dogs choosing new toys correctly?
A.They liked bright colors. B.The owners helped them.
C.They remembered all toys. D.They connected names to use.
63.What was special about the toys used?
A.They were the dogs’ favorites. B.They looked very different.
C.They came from one store. D.They were the same.
64.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Teaching dogs to laugh at home. B.Why border collies are smart.
C.Dogs’ ability to group toys by use. D.The steps of a science study.
65.What will scientists probably study next?
A.How long dogs remember names. B.If dogs can guess a toy’s use alone.
C.If other animals can learn names. D.If loud words help learning.
【答案】61.A 62.D 63.B 64.C 65.B
61.第三段中提及“When playing with a toy, owners said ‘pull’ or ‘fetch’ so the dogs learned which word matched which toy type.”,说明狗狗是在玩耍时通过主人说出的指令来学习玩具对应的单词。
62.第三段中提及“When they are asked to pick the ‘pull’ or ‘fetch’ toy from a pile, the dogs chose correctly most of the time. This shows dogs can label objects in their minds by what the objects are used for.”,说明狗狗能将单词和物品的用途联系起来,因此可以推断出它们把名称和用途建立了关联。
63.第三段第二句“The toys were all different in shape, size and color.”
C“Dogs’ ability to group toys by use.”
65.根据最后一段“Next, scientists will see if dogs can guess an object’s use without being taught what it’s for.”
E
Every living thing needs to reproduce. Reproducing means creating more members of your group. If plants only grow in one small place, they may compete for sunlight, water, and soil. To survive better, they need to send their young to different places. In order for plants to reproduce, they have to spread their seeds to other areas. 66
The simplest way is gravity (重力). Many seeds are inside of fruit. When a piece of fruit gets too heavy, it falls from a tree to the ground. Then wind or small animals may pass by and move the fallen fruit to another place. Rainwater carries the seeds to a new place as well. 67 Apples spread this way. When apples fall to the ground, their seeds can begin a new life under suitable conditions.
68 Dandelions (蒲公英) are a good example of this. Dandelion seeds are so light that when wind blows, it carries dandelion seeds to new places. Maple seeds also use wind. Their seeds are connected with long, thin wings, so they can fly farther because they have special flat parts that look like wings. When the seed falls from the tree, its“wings” help it fly farther from the tree. Strong wind can take these seeds quite far away.
Some animals help plants spread their seeds. 69 Animals often eat fruit with seeds. While the seed is in the animal’s body, it stays whole. The digestive (消化的) system of the animal does not harm the hard seed coat. When the seed leaves the animal, it’s in a new place.
Ants also help spread seeds. Some seeds have a special smell that attracts ants. The ants bring the seeds back to their home, which of course is underground. 70 They leave the rest of the seed underground. After that, the seed can start growing. This is another smart way for plants to grow in new places.
A.They only eat a small part of the seed for food.
B.Other plants use wind to spread their seeds.
C.These help move the seed even farther away.
D.Plants have developed all kinds of ways to do this.
E.Sometimes animals will pick up the fruit and drop it in another area.
【答案】66.D 67.C 68.B 69.E 70.A

C选项“These help move the seed even farther away.”
B选项“Other plants use wind to spread their seeds.”
E选项“Sometimes animals will pick up the fruit and drop it in another area.”
A选项“They only eat a small part of the seed for food.”

A.Fifty billion EVs. B.About half of the EVs in the nose.
C.All of the EVs in the nose. D.Five percent of the EVs in the nose.
54.What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A.EVs can help people kill all kinds of viruses.

59.According to the author, what should we pay attention to when playing soft music?
A.Do some interesting experiments.
B.Make sure each of the pieces has 70 beats per minute.
C.Make sure the final piece is the loudest among all.
