B In February,Dr.Robert Lefkowitz published a memoir (回忆录) called A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Stockholm:The Adrenaline-Fueled Adventures of an Accidental Scientist. As a physician and biochemist,Lefkowitz is a professor of biochemistry and chemistry at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham,North Carolina. In a recent conversation via video,Lefkowitz said that he wanted his memoir to be “funny, interesting, and easy to understand”.In the book,Lefkowitz humorously describes his journey from a cardiologist (or a heart doctor) to a biochemist. Lefkowitz’s dream of becoming a doctor began when he was eight years old and growing up in the Bronx of New York City. After his father died of a heart attack,Lefkowitz made up his mind to be a cardiologist. He earned his medical degree at Columbia University. Lefkowitz is no stranger to conducting experiments and making discoveries. He was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Brian Kobilka. The two scientists were honored for their discoveries that could help unlock the secrets of many diseases. When asked what played the most important role in his success,Lefkowitz mentioned about himself and he described himself as “reasonably intelligent and creative, hardworking, and not easily disturbed”.He added that being funny could also be very good for you and the people around you. Before winning the Nobel Prize,Lefkowitz did countless experiments, and only 1 out of 50 turned out OK.“With difficult decisions I’ve had to make,I tend to make them with my heart rather than my head.” Lefkowitz said.“However,I don’t mean that deciding with your heart is always right.” At age 78,the scientist has no plans for slowing down.“My body and mind are still working,” he said.“I want to continue running my lab at Duke University and writing and publishing research papers.” 24.What directly motivated Lefkowitz to be a doctor? A.His conversation with a cardiologist. B.His father’s death from a heart attack. C.His enthusiasm for a doctor’s memoir. D.His poor physical health in childhood. 25.What is the key to Lefkowitz’s success in his own opinion? A.His good teamwork. B.His family’s support. C.His positive qualities. D.His interest in research. 26.Which of the following can best describe Lefkowitz according to the last paragraph? A.Practice makes perfect. B.Bad luck brings good luck. C.You are never too old to work. D.Experience is the best teacher. 27.Where is the passage probably taken from? A.A travel journal. B.A play review. C.A short story. D.A science magazine. C A handful of stencils (模板) and three pens sound like materials for a child’s art project. But researchers have now used these tools to draw functional health monitors directly on human skin. A team led by biomedical engineer Faheem Ershad of the University of Houston first developed a conductive (导电的) ink that is safe to use on human skin. The researchers loaded the ink into ballpoint pens, then placed a stencil made of tape on a volunteer and followed within it to draw the simple circuit diagram (电路图).Within five minutes the ink dried to create a working sensor. The researchers then taped on an electrical line to provide power and send data to a computer. Using just this type of ink,the team measured the electrical activity of the heart and muscles.Because the sensor stuck perfectly to the skin, wearers could walk around without jarring it,which reduced data quality. The ink didn’t take in sweat and was easily removed with a wet paper towel and soap. For more advanced equipment,Ershad’s team used two additional inks:one served as a semi-conductor (半导体),and the other acted as an object to prevent electricity.Zheng Yan,a biomedical engineer at the University of Missouri, and his colleagues have developed similar technology using pencils and paper, but their method is limited to passive conductors that cannot introduce energy into a circuit.Ershad says that he hopes to create high-tech sensors to discover health indicators ranging from elements in sweat to the brain’s electrical activity. The researchers plan to eventually make their sensors truly wireless by combining more advanced ink-based circuits. After that achievement, they say, people could use affordable sets of stencils and pens to carefully watch their own health at home. 28.How does the new wearable sensor technology work? A.By placing a stencil to send health data. B.By applying a conductive ink to human skin. C.By loading a safe ink to a working sensor. D.By drawing a simple circuit diagram with pens. 29.What does the underlined word “jarring” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A.Shaking. B.Accessing. C.Curing. D.Hiding. 30.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A.Hospitals will increase the cost of testing health indicators. B.Researchers aim to make advanced wireless ink-based sensors. C.A safe sensor will be applied to make human skin less sensitive. D.Yan’s team has developed a technology to lead energy into a circuit. 31.What is the text mainly talking about? A.A child’s art project helping check health indicators. B.A conductive ink sensor sending data to a computer. C.An electronics system checking brain’s electrical activity. D.A pen-and-ink method producing wearable health equipment. D Mosquitoes carry malaria (疟疾),which kills thousands of people each year. Now some researchers are trying to use genetic engineering to make the annoying insects into partners in the fight against the disease. For years, public health officials have tried to limit the disease by controlling mosquito populations.“But that approach is temporary,” says Anthony James,a professor of biology and genetics at the University of California,Irvine,“Because mosquitoes are extremely tough little insects, and their populations can quickly rebound.” Therefore,James and his colleagues want to try a different approach:making mosquitoes themselves into malaria-fighting warriors, which is a complete departure from traditional ways of controlling malaria. To understand how it works,it helps to understand the life cycle of malaria. The malaria pathogen (病原体) is a parasite (寄生虫) that grows inside humans. It’s passed via mosquitoes that move from person to person, sucking blood.“If we can make the mosquitoes difficult for the pathogens to survive,we can wipe out the disease,” he says. But making mosquitoes uninviting to malaria is a tough job. To solve the problem, the team used a gene-editing technique called CRISPR.They started with genes from mice, whose immune systems do fight human malaria, engineered those genes, and then gave them to the mosquitoes. It turned out the malaria-fighting antibodies which gene-edited mosquitoes produced worked very well. They reduced the number of parasites in the mosquito before they were passed to a human host. James’ team are now working on planning a field trial, which he hopes could be conducted on an island or in another isolated location. But genetically changing wild animals does not sit well with environmentalists.“There’s no need to engineer a mosquito,” says Dana Perls, senior program manager for the emerging technology program at the non-profit Friends of the Earth.Perls points out that naturally occurring methods for reducing malaria appear to be showing promise,as does a new vaccine (疫苗) against the disease.“Why take unnecessary risks and release a species that can’t be recalled once it’s released into the wild?” she asks. 32.What can we know from the second and third paragraphs? A.Mosquitoes reproduce quickly. B.Mosquitoes depart from malaria. C.Mosquitoes are malaria-fighting warriors. D.Mosquitoes’ populations are under control. 33.Which of the following are attractive to the malaria pathogen? A.Mice. B.Parasites. C.Mosquitoes. D.Gene-edited mosquitoes. 34.What is environmentalists’ attitude toward this new approach? A.Tolerant. B.Favorable. C.Objective. D.Disapproving. 35.What is the best title for the text? A.Limiting Malaria by Controlling Mosquito Populations B.Controlling Malaria by Editing Mosquitoes’ Genes C.Curing Malaria with Gene-edited Mosquitoes D.Preventing Malaria with a New Vaccine 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 In a popular video,Emily McDonald,a neuroscience consultant, discusses three things she does each day to protect her brain-staying off her phone in the morning, thinking positively, and avoiding junk food. The advice McDonald gives in her video isn’t bad. 36   Catch some z’s Practicing good sleep hygiene (卫生),as well as getting six to eight hours of sleep each night,is one of the best things you can do for your brain health.Sleep helps the brain form memories, reinforce new concepts and ideas, and remove the buildup of bad proteins in the brain. 37 With enough sleep, you can preserve your brain’s functionality even when you get older.  Get your heart pumping Regular exercise makes for powerful heart muscles. And a strong heart helps pump enough blood to the brain to maintain its performance. The official recommendation is to have 150 minutes’ moderate exercise a week which is not limited to certain types of physical activities. 38 Remember that anything is better than nothing.  Try new things. Exposing yourself to new people, places, and challenges can keep your mind sharp, and improve brain plasticity. But trying new things doesn’t necessarily mean you need to spend money traveling or take up a new hobby. 39 If you can keep using your brain in new ways, you’ll have better mental outcomes as you age.   40   Many studies have shown highly processed foods, like packaged goods, can increase the risk of health problems, like diabetes and high blood pressure. These diseases can generally harm the entire body, including your brain. To keep your brain healthy, limit processed foods and get sufficient nutrition from a wide variety of plants and animals. A.Remain socially involved. B.Stick to a healthy,well-rounded diet. C.Walking your dog a couple miles a day counts as well. D.It also boosts the brain’s ability to adapt to new situations. E.It can be as simple as trying a crossword you haven’t done before. F.But there’s more to the health of the brain and the science behind it. G.Besides, this doesn’t mean getting into routines is necessarily harmful. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 One day,my 12-year-old daughter participated in a school poetry reading event. All her classmates were invited to write a “lie poem” about how 41 they were and read them aloud. They were supposed to 42 untruths about themselves that made them sound 43 wonderful. As I listened to the poems,I realized that the children were actually 44 the picture of their future.By “lying” to themselves, they were creating a 45 of who they wanted to be in the future.  I couldn’t help admiring the school for 46 the children to dream big in such a special way, even if it might not be the first intention. In fact, most of us are 47 to see the truth of who we could be.My daughter’s school developed an unintended 48 to that difficulty:If it’s hard for you to imagine the 49 in yourself, then you might want to begin by expressing it as a 50 ,as did the children who wrote the poems.  Think up some stories about who you would like to be.In due course, this 51 exercise would help you build the necessary blueprint for 52 your achievements.Without a picture of your 53 self, you can’t live into that self.So 54 it till you make it.The lie will become the 55 in the end.  41.A.rich B.busy C.great D.smart 42.A.point out B.make up C.hold back D.rely on 43.A.unbelievably B.unconsciously C.unacceptably D.unreasonably 44.A.exaggerating B.restoring C.admiring D.clarifying 45.A.sample B.vision C.message D.principle 46.A.forcing B.requesting C.motivating D.warning 47.A.unable B.anxious C.nervous D.unwilling 48.A.excuse B.balance C.solution D.connection 49.A.interest B.courage C.expectation D.potential 50.A.fantasy B.fortune C.benefit D.reference 51.A.healthy B.creative C.gentle D.formal 52.A.ensuring B.informing C.stretching D.measuring 53.A.highest B.biggest C.happiest D.bravest 54.A.stop B.forget C.hide D.pretend 55.A.dream B.reality C.memory D.nightmare 第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。 Shen Kuo was an excellent scientist of the Northern Song Dynasty. He was an all-round scholar of astronomy, literature, physics, chemistry, calendars, geology, meteorology 56. medical science. He was also an outstanding engineer and excellent military strategist. He even made a great contribution 57. art and literature. So Shen Kuo was well known for being 58. When I was in the third grade,I was picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had practised my lines so hard with me.But no matter how easily I delivered them at home,as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally,my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白) part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day.But she sensed my pain, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤蔓) was turning green.Under the huge trees,we could see yellow dandelions popping through the grass in bunches,as if a painter had touched our landscape with a little bit of gold.I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the dandelions.“I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, suddenly pulling a flower up by its roots.“From now on,we’ll have only roses in this garden.” “But I like dandelions,” I protested (抗议).“All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions.” My mother looked at me seriously.“Yes,every flower has its own beauty, doesn’t it?” she asked thoughtfully.I nodded, feeling pleased that I had won her over.“And that is true of people too,” she added.“Not everyone can be a princess.Hence, there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had sensed my pain,I started to cry when I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 “You will be a beautiful narrator,” she comforted. ______________________________             Backstage on the night of the performance,I still felt nervous. ______________________             参考答案 附:听力原文 (Text 1) M:Will you go hiking with me this coming weekend? (Text 10) M:Hello, everybody.Today I’d like to share with you something about John Audubon.John was born on April 26th,1785.He spent much of his childhood in France, where he spent many hours each day outdoors painting pictures. At the age of 18,he moved to the United States.Well, actually,John began his life in the US as a businessman. However, instead of taking care of his business,John was often off exploring nature. At first,John spent his time hunting for fun. Then he found that the animals around were very beautiful, and he particularly enjoyed observing the birds he saw.He began studying them, trying to learn the differences between the birds and noticing their different behaviours. Therefore he painted the birds he observed a lot.In 1819,John realized that he didn’t have enough money to pay his bills. He was very upset that he couldn’t earn enough money to support his family,so he spent time improving his painting skills and began to sell his paintings. He discovered that he could earn some money while doing something he really enjoyed. We are lucky now to have so many paintings of American birds by John Audubon. 1.B 2.B 3.C 4.A 5.C 6.A 7.A 8.A 9.B 10.C 11.C 12.A 13.B 14.C 15.B
