During the Jin Dynasty (265-420), there was a child named Che Yin. He was smart and loved to read. He grew up in a poor family and couldn’t afford lamp oil to study at night.
One night, he saw fireflies (萤火虫) outside his house and came up with an idea. He caught some fireflies in a cloth bag and hung the bag up as a lamp. It was said that he spent all of his summer nights reading like this.
Another child named Sun Kang who lived during the same time period also loved reading. One night during winter, Sun used up all of his lamp oil and couldn’t study at night. When he suddenly woke up at midnight, he saw the thick snow reflecting the moonlight outside his house. His first thought was “Oh, I can use the reflected light to read!” He took out his books and read, even though he was freezing cold.
Both of these kids later became successful government officials. People were touched by their hardworking spirit and their stories inspired the Chinese idiom nangying yingxue, or “to read by the light of bagged fireflies or the reflected light of snow”.
In the past, people had a much harder time studying than we do. They might have had to copy books by hand because books were very rare. For poor families, paper and writing brushes were often too expensive to afford. Students even had to travel over mountains and rivers in order to find a good teacher. However, tough conditions cannot stop young minds from learning. If there is a will, there is always light on the road to knowledge.
29. What do we know about the two children?
A. They wasted their time during the day.
B. They were hard-working and smart.
C. They invented a Chinese idiom.
30. What does the underlined word “tough” mean?

32. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Nothing Can Stop Studies
B. Fight Hard Against Poverty (贫穷)
C. Light that Makes Your Life Bright

Over the last few centuries, there have been many changes in our lives.
To start with, people were not able to travel such a long distance in such a short time in the past. Planes were not very popular at that time because they used to be a very expensive way to travel. Nowadays, we have fast, comfortable vehicles, such as cars and high-speed trains.
Secondly, in the past, people had to work much harder because they did not have the tools that we have today. Today, most of the difficult and dangerous work is done by computers and machines.
Thirdly, in the past, the living conditions were not as good as they are now. There were no bathrooms or running water in many houses, and many people could not buy things like fridges, TV sets or washing machines. Now, most families have several of these things.
Lastly, communications have become much easier than before. In the past, we kept in touch with others by writing letters or sending faxes, but now we have many other ways to choose from, such as making a phone call, sending emails or messages and chatting online. Moreover, we can even see the people we care about when making a phone call through mobile phones, and we can see each other while chatting online. The most surprising thing is that we can make a phone call with the astronauts and see them when they are in space. What a magical thing!
Thanks to technology, especially the Internet, our lives have become much easier and happier than before. I’m sure they will become more wonderful in the future. Don’t you think so?
33. Why were planes not so popular many years ago?
A. Because they were not able to fly long distances.
B. Because they were very expensive.
C. Because they were not fast enough.
34. What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Many families have TV sets and washing machines nowadays.
B. There were no bathrooms or running water before.
C. Living conditions have been improved.
35. The writer’s last example for great changes in people’s lives is about ________.
A. traveling B. living conditions C. communication
36. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. Great Changes in Our Lives B. Fast Development of Science C. We Live a Happy Life Now
D
Have you ever noticed something around you that you’ve never seen before? They all came about because someone invented them. Most inventions begin with an idea. Someone sees a need or a problem. Then he or she thinks of an idea to meet that need or solve the problem.
But not all inventions happen on purpose. Someone may be working on one idea and invent something else by chance. Or an inventor might make a mistake that turns out to be a good idea.
Between AD 600 and 900, scientists in ancient China were working in a lab when they invented fireworks by accident. They were working on an invention that would help people live forever. They mixed materials together like salt, charcoal (木炭), and sulphur (硫黄). They put the mixture into pieces of bamboo. Then they threw them into a fire. This is how fireworks were invented.
In 1905, a boy named Frank Epperson left a cup of soda outside all night. It had a wooden stick in it. The soda froze in the cold evening. In the morning, Frank tasted the frozen soda. He shared the frozen soda with his friends. All of them spoke highly of his new invention. It tasted really good! He called his invention “Episicle”.
In 1968, scientist Spencer Silver was researching adhesives (黏合剂) when he discovered one that stuck to things, but could then be easily taken away. For years he tried to find a use for his invention. At the same time, another scientist named Art Fry was singing. He used small pieces of paper to mark the songs in his book. He needed bookmarks that would stay in place. Silver and Fry discussed their ideas and created the Post-it note.
37. According to Paragraph 3, scientists in ancient China were working in a lab to ________.
A. invent fireworks
B. invent something that could make fire
C. invent something that would help people live forever
38. If the text is followed by another story, what will the story probably be?
A. The Wright brothers invented the airplane.
B. Whitcomb Judson invented the zipper.
C. George Crum invented potato chips.
39. What’s the structure of the text? (Paragraph 1 =①)
A. B. C.
40. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The Importance of Inventions B. Inventions by Accident C. Some Famous Inventors

Everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. ___44___ Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place, so you can understand the problem better.

1. I wonder if there is ________ underground parking lot ________ the bank.
A. a; besides B. an; beside C. the; beside
2. —What’s the secret to your success, Daddy?
—You should pay attention to ________ mistakes.
A. avoiding making B. avoid to make C. avoid making
【答案】A
“avoid doing sth.”是固定搭配,表示“避免做某事”,“make mistakes”表示“犯错”,所以“避免犯错”应该是“avoid making mistakes”;“pay attention to”中“to”是介词,后面接动词的-ing 形式,所以这里要用“avoiding making”。
3. —As a teenager, do you know ________ when you are in trouble?
—Yes, I can ask my parents, teachers or any other adult I trust.
A. who you can ask for help B. how you can ask for help C. who can you ask for help
【答案】A
宾语从句的语序应用陈述语序,排除C;根据“I can ask my parents, teachers or any other adult I trust.” 故选A。
4. Ms. Lin used to ________ to work, but now she gets used to ________ to work.
A. riding; walking B. ride; walking C. riding; walk
根据“used to”可知,第一空用used to do sth.,表示“过去常常做某事”;根据“gets used to”可知,第二空使用get used to doing sth.,表示“习惯于做某事”。故选B。
5. I think it is better to ask someone for advice ________ risk doing something.
A. instead of B. because of C. rather than
6. By the time I got to the cinema, the movie ________ for ten minutes.
A. had been on B. had stopped C. had begun
【答案】A
had been on已经上映;had stopped已经停止;had begun已经开始。 故选A。
7. You can’t go home ________ your homework ________.
A. unless; finished B. if; is finished C. unless; is finished
8. —We had fun________ at the party last night.
—Oh! It was ________ exciting party that I would never forget it.
A. to dance; so B. dancing; such an C. to dance; such an
9. Carmen likes musicians ________.
A. who plays different kinds of music B. that can sing along C. who play quiet and slow songs
who plays different kinds of music 演奏不同种类音乐的人(who引导定语从句,plays为第三人称单数形式,主谓不一致,此选项错误);that can sing along 可以跟着唱的(that引导定语从句,但此句缺少宾语且语义不符合语境);who play quiet and slow songs 演奏安静缓慢歌曲的人(who引导定语从句,修饰先行词musicians, play与musicians在数上保持一致,语义也符合喜欢某种类型音乐家的语境)。根据句子结构和语义,应填who play quiet and slow songs 。
10. —I hear a common worker has been chosen to play the lead role in the film.
—So lucky! Just as the saying goes, “________.”
A. Practice makes perfect
B. The early bird catches the worm
C. Every dog has its day
The early bird catches the worm早起的鸟儿有虫吃;Every dog has its day凡人皆有得意日。 Every dog has its day符合题意。

For poor families, paper and writing brushes were often too expensive to afford. Students even had to travel over mountains and rivers in order to find a good teacher.
