In the Tang dynasty, there were no tall buildings. People lived in houses made of wood. They thought the wooden houses were warmer.

At that time, there were no cars, trains or planes. People usually went to another place on foot, by horse or boat. They usually spent many days visiting a city, sometimes more than a month.

There were no computers or phones in those days. People couldn’t write letters on the Internet. They usually sent letters with the help of pigeons.

Qilin is a kind and lucky animal. It has many beautiful colours on its body. It has a big head and there are two horns on it. It has four legs, and the feet are just like a horse’s and it runs fast on the land. ​

Pixiu is a brave and lucky animal. It has a loong head and a lion body. Its mouth is very big and its four legs are short and strong. People think it can protect their houses and keep their families safe and happy.​

John wants to go to the shopping centre (购物中心), but he doesn’t know the way. He sees an old woman on the street. He says, “You, tell me the way to the shopping centre!” The old woman doesn’t answer.

John gets angry and shouts (喊叫), “Old woman, tell me the way to the shopping centre! Can you hear me?” The old woman looks at him and says, “Walk along this road and turn left at the third crossing (十字路口), and then turn left. And you will find the shopping centre.”

Then John goes away. He walks for an hour. He meets the old woman again. John is very angry and shouts, “Why do you tell me the wrong way?” The old woman says, “Because you ask in a wrong way.”
