Dear Chris,
How have you been? I’m thrilled to share an inspiring elective I’m taking, AI and Artistic Creation, which is part of our school’s new “Art and Science” series.
The course explores how artificial intelligence can work as a creative partner in artistic production. In class, we learn how to use AI tools to turn abstract ideas into vivid posters, and even original pieces of music. What I find most impressive is its blend of imagination and technology, which makes artistic creation more innovative.
Through this course, I have not only sharpened my creative skills but also gained a deeper understanding of how technology is reshaping art.
Yours,
Li Hua

At that instant, I realized I was the only one left to save us. Frightened as I was, I tried to calm down and recalled what Dad had taught me. I quickly moved to the captain’s seat and found the first-aid kit to clean his wound and cover it with a bandage. Then I grabbed the radio and sent a distress signal, telling the coast our location clearly. I also used the bowline knot Dad taught me to fix the broken parts tightly to stop the boat from being more damaged. I kept praying and stayed with Dad, waiting for help bravely.
Hours later, the storm finally exhausted itself, leaving a sea of calm. The gentle waves touched the boat softly. Soon I saw a rescue boat coming towards us. Dad woke up slowly and looked at me in surprise. I told him what I had done to save us. At that moment, I no longer feared the sea. Instead, I understood Dad’s love for the ocean — it taught me to be brave and responsible. This trip became the most unforgettable birthday gift in my life.

(新情境)Over the summer, my daughter, Cora, then 9, attended her first sleepaway camp. It had been her longest time away from home. “How much longer?” she asked with increasing frequency during our return trip to Stanford.
Just past Crystal Springs Lake, Highway 280 peaks and then bends left, going down through golden grasses. I asked her to look out of the window. “Do you recognize where we are?” She stared out, then let out a cry of longing. By the time we turned onto Campus Drive, it had become a repeated shout: “Home! Home!”
Cora has lived as a resident fellow kid in dorms since she was one. She’s connected to the land and its inhabitants: the coast live oak trees she climbed and the annual summer ants into every campus kitchen. She’s tied to its people — notably, college students. She has joined their Halloween costume competitions and eaten dining hall chicken beside them since she could hold one up.
I, on the other hand, have a hard time answering the question of where I am “from”. By the time I was Cora’s age, I’d lived in Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and North Carolina. Any friendships built to last did so by letter. In adulthood I added four more states. Where can I lay claim to? I’ve now lived at Stanford a collective 13 years and built a family here.
In that moment Cora cried out, I was filled with a realization. Cora is from here. Up to that day, I’d thought of Stanford as a thing I was sharing with my children, but I realized it is something they are sharing with me. And this place grounds us, my daughter and me, and it connects us to each other.
24.What does the daughter’s repeated question “How much longer?” show?
A.She is physically exhausted. B.She is unsure of the route.
C.She is eager to return home. D.She is uneasy about leaving.
25.Why does the author describe Cora’s childhood life?
A.To show how unusual her childhood is. B.To explain why Cora enjoys outdoors.
C.To contrast what life her mother had lived. D.To illustrate how deeply Cora belongs.
26.What difficulty does the author note about her own background?
A.She has lived in too many places to feel rooted.
B.She has lost contact with her childhood friends.
C.She regrets moving frequently during adulthood.
D.She feels disconnected from her family history.
27.What realization does the author reach at the end?
A.Her children feel more at home than she does.
B.Her family has become deeply rooted in Stanford.
C.Stanford gives them a shared sense of belonging.
D.Long-term residence creates a sense of ownership.

(原创题)Human language is complex and rich, yet from the view of information science, the same messages could be sent in a much more compressed format. This leads to a puzzle: why don't we communicate like computers using only ones and zeros?
Michael Hahn, a linguist, and Richard Futrell from the University of California tried to solve this puzzle. They created a model explaining the structure of human language. They found that although human language seems inefficient, it actually fits how our brains work best.
Their research shows that human language is shaped by our real-life experiences. For example, if someone uses an invented word like "gol" to describe half a cat and half a dog, no one would understand it because it doesn't match our shared knowledge of the world. Human language works because it connects to familiar concepts. This makes communication easier. A scrambled word might be shorter, but it is meaningless to listeners.
The brain prefers familiar patterns to reduce effort. Although digital code might send information faster, it would be too difficult for our brains to process because it is detached from daily life. Hahn compares this to driving to work. A familiar route feels easy and automatic, while a shorter but unknown route requires full attention and feels tiring. Similarly, when we speak naturally, our brains use far fewer "bits" of energy because we rely on deeply learned patterns.
This process is called "predictive processing." When we hear a sentence, our brain guesses what word comes next based on what we already know. For instance, hearing "The five green..." makes us expect a countable, plural, green object. Only when we hear the final word, like "cars," does the meaning become clear. This way of speaking reduces uncertainty step by step. In short, human language is designed to save mental energy, not to save space. These findings might also help improve artificial intelligence by teaching it to communicate more like humans.
28. Why do scientists think human language is inefficient?
A. It is too difficult for computers to understand.
B. It is not based on real-life experiences.
C. It uses too many words to express ideas.
D. It cannot be compressed into digital codes.
29. What does the author intend to show by using the example of "gol"?
A. The importance of creating new words.
B. The difficulty of learning a new language.
C. The link between language and shared experience.
D. The complexity of human linguistic structures.
30. What is the main purpose of the "commuting" example in Paragraph 4?
A. To explain why new routes are more challenging.
B. To compare human brains with computer processors.
C. To prove that familiar patterns reduce mental effort.
D. To show the importance of daily driving experience.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph about human language?
A. It is designed to save storage space.
B. It aims to minimize cognitive load.
C. It relies on guessing words randomly.
D. It is inefficient for artificial intelligence.

(原创题)Some of the ocean's top predators are facing a "double jeopardy" (双重危险)as rising temperatures threaten their survival. A new study reveals that warm-bodied fish like tunas and sharks, which can keep parts of their bodies warmer than the surrounding water, use nearly four times more energy than cold-blooded fish of similar size. This high-performance lifestyle allows them to swim faster and hunt better, but it comes at a huge cost: they need to consume far more food to fuel their bodies.
The researchers found that as these fish grow larger, their bodies naturally generate and retain heat more effectively due to basic physics. While this helps them stay warm, it also creates a dangerous risk of overheating. If water temperatures rise too high, these large fish cannot release heat quickly enough to maintain a stable body temperature. For example, a large warm-bodied shark may struggle to survive in waters above 17°C without changing its behavior.
To avoid dangerous warming, these fish must slow down, dive into cooler depths, or migrate toward the poles. However, diving deeper makes it harder to find food, and moving toward cooler regions limits their habitat. As global temperatures continue to rise, the suitable living space for these species is expected to shrink significantly, especially during warmer months.
This situation is made worse by the fact that many of these species are already heavily impacted by overfishing. With their energy needs increasing and their food sources potentially becoming scarce, they are being pushed closer to their physiological limits. The study highlights that climate change is not just warming the oceans, but is also narrowing the survival options for these marine giants.
32. Why do warm-bodied fish face a "double jeopardy" according to the text?
A. They need more food while their living space is shrinking.
B. They cannot swim fast enough to catch their prey.
C. They are too large to hide from human hunters.
D. They are losing their ability to control body heat.
33. What is the main challenge for large warm-bodied fish as they grow bigger?
A. Finding enough cold-blooded fish to eat.
B. Balancing the heat they produce and lose.
C. Migrating long distances across the ocean.
D. Competing with other predators for food.
34. What can be inferred about the future of these species from the text?
A. They will easily adapt to warmer waters.
B. Their population will increase rapidly.
C. Their survival will become increasingly difficult.
D. They will stop diving into deep waters.
35. What is the main purpose of this text?
A. To describe the hunting methods of sharks.
B. To warn about the impact of climate change on marine life.
C. To compare different types of fish metabolism.
D. To promote new fishing regulations.

Our solar system is named after the Latin word for sun, “Sol”. The thing about our solar system is that while there are lots of other suns and planets out there, 36
Most other systems feature planets orbiting closer to their parent sun than Mercury (水星) does, the closest planet to Sol. Other systems also have “super Earths”. 37 And these systems usually have “hot Jupiters (木星)”, which are gas giants orbiting very close to their sun.
38 Other systems have planets with highly non-circular orbits, similar to those of comets (彗星). In our solar system, the planetary orbits are nearly circular and the planets are widely spaced. Other systems have planets grouped closely together, like peas in a pod.
Astronomers, and scientists in general don’t like “special” things. They like things that are “usual” or “typical” because that allows explanation. Yet, when faced with something unusual, they seek to understand it as well. 39 One theory states that at an early stage, Jupiter may have migrated through our solar system clearing out an initial group of large planets orbiting closer to Sol, before it settled in its current orbit. Another, more interesting, approach is to ask whether our solar system seems different simply because we have evolved to notice its uniqueness. 40 Or there are yet other possibilities.
A.our system is just a bit different.
B.there are more of them to be found.
C.The orbits of planets in our solar system are different too.
D.The act of observation may have changed what is observed.
E.So, of course, there are theories on why our solar system is different.
F.They are rocky planets larger than Earth but smaller than Neptune (海王星).
G.In fact, some planetary systems have orbits just as circular as those in ours.

My father was a man of the ocean, a retired captain who believed that the salt water could cure anything from a common cold to a broken spirit. I, however, was his complete opposite. While he found peace in the rhythmic crashing of waves, I found only a terrifying vastness that made my heart race. To me, the sea was an unpredictable monster.
For my 18th birthday, Dad insisted on a “man-to-man” fishing trip on our old wooden boat “The Seeker”. He wanted to pass on his passion before I left for college. I reluctantly agreed, not wanting to disappoint him. As we sailed miles away from the coast, Dad was in high spirits, teaching me how to cast the line. He especially pointed to the radio on the dashboard, reminding me, “If the sea ever gets angry, Elias, this radio is your lifeline to the shore.” He even taught me how to tie a “bowline knot”, a knot that never slips.
However, our quiet rhythm was soon broken. By mid-afternoon, the horizon turned a dark purple. A sudden, violent wind swept across the water with a speed that caught even my father off guard. The waves, once gentle, transformed into giant walls of grey water, striking heavily against “The Seeker”.
Then, disaster struck. A loud crack echoed through the howling wind — the engine had died, choked by some floating rubbish. We were powerless, drifting deeper into the angry heart of the storm. Fear, cold and sharp, froze me. I watched my father struggle to fix the engine. “Elias, stay back!” he shouted, “And remember, the first-aid kit is right under the captain’s seat!” he yelled over the roar .But before I could move, a massive wave rocked the boat fiercely. Dad lost his footing, his head hitting the metal railing hard before he collapsed onto the deck (甲板). Blood began to run down his forehead as he lay motionless on the deck.

M: Thank you for having me. In some northern regions of China, many people only eat porridge for breakfast. But in southern areas, breakfast usually includes protein like eggs and lean meat, which is more balanced.
W: So for those who only have porridge for breakfast, it’s a misunderstanding that porridge alone can meet the body’s morning needs, right?
M: Exactly. Some people are also surprised when others refuse to drink milk before bed, because these people believe it blocks sleep. People in coastal areas are confused by those who avoid seafood entirely. But ideas vary from person to person.
W: I get it. Diet misunderstandings are everywhere.
M: Absolutely. Personal eating habits and family influence play a key role here. There’s no absolute right or wrong. Different living environments lead to different concepts.
W: Doctor Smith, thanks a lot for coming to our community lecture and bringing us such useful knowledge.

【答案】24.C 25.D 26.A 27.C
根据第一段““How much longer?” she asked with increasing frequency during our return trip to Stanford.(“还要多久?”在我们返回斯坦福的途中,她问得越来越频繁。)”以及第二段“By the time we turned onto Campus Drive, it had become a repeated shout: “Home! Home!”(当我们拐进校园大道时,这已经变成了重复的呼喊:“家!家!”)”可知,女儿不断问“还有多久”是因为急切想要回家。故选C。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段“Cora has lived as a resident fellow kid in dorms since she was one. She’s connected to the land and its inhabitants: the coast live oak trees she climbed and the annual summer ants into every campus kitchen. She’s tied to its people — notably, college students.(科拉从一岁起就作为住宿研究员的孩子住在宿舍里。她与这片土地及其居民紧密相连:她爬过的海岸橡树,以及每年夏天涌入校园每个厨房的蚂蚁。她与这里的人息息相关——尤其是大学生。)”可知,作者描述女儿的童年生活是为了说明女儿对斯坦福这片土地有深厚的归属感。故选D。
26.细节理解题。根据第四段“By the time I was Cora’s age, I’d lived in Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and North Carolina. Any friendships built to last did so by letter. In adulthood I added four more states. Where can I lay claim to?(在我和科拉差不多大的时候,我已经住过俄亥俄州、印第安纳州、密苏里州和北卡罗来纳州。任何想要长久维系的友谊都是通过书信实现的。成年后,我又多住了四个州。我能声称自己来自哪里呢?)”可知,作者一生在太多地方居住过,以至于找不到自己的根,没有固定的归属感。故选A。
根据最后一段“I’d thought of Stanford as a thing I was sharing with my children, but I realized it is something they are sharing with me. And this place grounds us, my daughter and me, and it connects us to each other.(我曾以为斯坦福是我和孩子们分享的东西,但我意识到,它是孩子们和我分享的东西。这个地方让我和女儿有了根基,也把我们彼此联系在一起。)”可知,作者意识到斯坦福给了她们一家人共同的归属感。故选C。

C 29. C 30. C 31. B
根据第一段 "Human language is remarkably rich and intricate. Yet from the standpoint of information theory, the same ideas could theoretically be transmitted in a far more compressed format." C "It uses too many words to express ideas"(用太多词表达想法)符合文意。选项 A 和 B 文中未提及;选项 D 与文中 "encoding speech as binary sequences... would be more efficient"(将语言编码为二进制会更高效)矛盾。
紧接着下一句 "Human language works because it connects directly to shared knowledge and lived experience" 直接点明了语言与共享经验的联系。 C "The link between language and shared experience"(语言与共享经验的联系)。
作者通过这个比喻是为了说明上一段提到的观点 "it places far less strain on the brain"(对大脑的压力更小)。 C "To prove that familiar patterns reduce mental effort"(证明熟悉的模式能减少精神努力)。
根据最后一段 "In short, human language is designed to save mental energy, not to save space." B "It aims to minimize cognitive load"(旨在最小化认知负荷)是对该句的同义替换。
D
A 33. B 34. C 35. B

37.根据上文“Most other systems feature planets orbiting closer to their parent sun than Mercury (水星) does, the closest planet to Sol. Other systems also have “super Earths”.(大多数其他星系中的行星都比水星(距离太阳最近的行星)更靠近其母星运行。此外,这些星系中还存在“超级地球”)”可知,前文提及“超级地球”的话题,推测本句是对超级地球进行定义解释,故F项“它们是比地球大但比海王星小的岩石行星”衔接紧密。故选F。
38.根据后文“Other systems have planets with highly non-circular orbits, similar to those of comets (彗星). In our solar system, the planetary orbits are nearly circular and the planets are widely spaced. Other systems have planets grouped closely together, like peas in a pod.(其他星系中的行星有着极为不规则的轨道,类似于彗星的轨道。而在我们的太阳系中,行星的轨道近乎圆形,且行星之间的距离较为广阔。而在其他星系中,行星则紧密地聚集在一起,就像一串串的豌豆)”可知,后文围绕行星轨道形状、间距展开对比;C项“我们太阳系中行星的轨道与其他行星系统也不相同”总起本段内容。故选C。
39.根据上文“Astronomers, and scientists in general don’t like “special” things. They like things that are “usual” or “typical” because that allows explanation. Yet, when faced with something unusual, they seek to understand it as well.(天文学家以及所有科学家都不喜欢“特殊”的事物。

Dear Chris,
How have you been? I’m thrilled to share an inspiring elective I’m taking, AI and Artistic Creation, which is part of our school’s new “Art and Science” series.
The course explores how artificial intelligence can work as a creative partner in artistic production. In class, we learn how to use AI tools to turn abstract ideas into vivid posters, and even original pieces of music. What I find most impressive is its blend of imagination and technology, which makes artistic creation more innovative.
