Have you noticed that the picture of Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, looks different in today’s history textbooks? For many years, students saw him with a “shoehorn face”, which means he had a chin (下巴) that stuck out and a very long face. Now, the picture has changed to make him look more calm and handsome.
This change isn’t brand-new. The new picture has been in high school textbooks since 2019, and it was added to Grade 7 textbooks in 2024.
In history, Zhu is pictured with two different appearances. One is called the zhengxing portrait (肖像), showing him with a round face and calm expression. The other is the yixing portrait, showing a sticking-out chin, long face and many dark spots. Historians believe the zhengxing portrait is closer to how Zhu really looked. This idea is supported by family features, as his son, Zhu Di, also had a round face.
Why are there two types of portraits? Professor Jin Wen explains that the yixing portrait became popular because of ancient beliefs. People thought that if a ruler looked unusual, it was a sign from heaven, making them trust the ruler more. In fact, Zhu himself also encouraged this unusual image. Some studies suggest he did this to protect himself by not showing his real look.
Today, not only textbooks but also the portraits at the Ming Xiaoling Museum in Nanjing show the zhengxing portrait. Many visitors support this change. It is not only about making the emperor look better, but it also helps young people think more critically about history. They can have their own understanding and judgement. Meanwhile, using the correct pictures shows respect for historical characters and helps teach history correctly, said Professor Lin Wei from Zhejiang University.
24. Which of the following is TRUE according to paragraphs 1 and 2?
A. Zhu Yuanzhang was the second emperor of the Ming Dynasty.
B. The new picture has been in high school textbooks since 2019.
C. The change of Zhu Yuanzhang’s picture is a completely new thing.
25. According to Professor Jin Wen, why was the yixing portrait popular?
A. Because it matched what people believed.
B. Because it looked like Zhu Yuanzhang’s real face.
C. Because it showed high-level painting skills.
26. What does the underlined word “critically” in the last paragraph mean?
A Understand quickly and use freely.
B. Follow blindly and accept fully.
C. Judge independently and never believe easily.
27. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The reason for using the wrong portrait.
B. The importance of using the right portrait.
C. The discoveries about Zhu Yuanzhang.

That morning, I was very late for school, afraid of being punished. Mr. Hamel had told us he would examine us on participles (分词), but I knew nothing about this at all. The day was warm and lovely. I could hear blackbirds singing and Prussian (普鲁士) soldiers training in the fields, which made me want to get away from school. However, I managed to fight against it and ran to school as fast as I could.
Passing the mayor’s (市长的) office, I saw people getting together around the notice board. For two years, all bad news had come from there. What could it be this time?
Usually, at the beginning of school, there was a great noise which could be heard in the street, desks opening and closing, lessons repeated aloud, and the teacher’s iron ruler beating on the desk, “A little more quiet!”
But that day, everything was unusually quiet, like a Sunday morning. Through the window, I saw my classmates already seated, and Mr. Hamel walked around with his iron ruler under his arm. I thought he would get mad at me for being late. But no! Mr. Hamel just looked at me gently and said, “Go at once to your seat, my little Frantz. We were going to begin without you.”
After sitting down, I noticed Mr. Hamel wore his handsome blue coat, which he only put on for special days. To my surprise, many villagers were also sitting at the back of the classroom silently, and it seemed there was a heavy weight on their shoulders. Then Mr. Hamel said seriously, “My children, this is my last class. Berlin has ordered that only German can be taught in the town. The new teacher will come tomorrow. This is your last French lesson. Please stay focused.”
(to be continued)
28. Why was the writer afraid of going to school that morning?
A. Because he was late and would have a participle exam.
B. Because the Prussian soldiers were training nearby.
C. Because he would be punished for fighting with his classmates.
29. What happened after the writer arrived at school?
A. Many people gathered around the notice board.
B. Students were opening and closing their desks.
C. His classmates sat quietly in the classroom.
30. How did villagers feel when they seated in the classroom?
A. Excited. B. Upset. C. Surprised.
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The first school day B. The teacher’s love C. The last French lesson

The Underdog’s Victory
In 2025, the story of Yongzhou Team in the “Xiang Super League” touched many people in Hunan. This young team was not seen as a strong competitor at first. They started with very little money and trained on a poor-quality field, so they were even jokingly called the “beggar team”.
Their journey was full of challenges. Players had to balance school and training. Sometimes after finishing games, they took overnight buses back home to save money. At the beginning of the season, they lost three games in a row. But they never stopped fighting. In a decisive quarter-final match, player Zhang Tao scored with an amazing overhead kick to save the team. In the semi-final (半决赛), young Peng Bin scored two important goals against a strong competitor team.
Their secret of winning was not having star players, but their unbreakable team spirit, called the “Forever Charge (永冲锋)” spirit. It means always fighting hard, sticking together, and never giving up. After losses, the team would quickly encourage each other and prepare for the next match. The coach said that the victory belonged not just to the players, but also to the proud history and culture of Yongzhou City.
The support from the city was unbelievable. When tickets were sold out, creative “tree tickets” and “second viewing sites” were set up, so thousands of fans could watch and cheer together. This unity between the team and its fans created a powerful force.
