A CLEAN, GREEN ENERGY FUTURE
Nowadays, many countries are making the important change from fossil fuels to clean, green and renewable sources of energy.Fossil fuels produce emissions, but renewable energy sources cause limited damage to the environment.
Here are the main types of renewable energy, with facts and examples from around the world.
Solar
Solar panels turn heat from the sun's rays into electricity, and solar heaters use that energy to heat water directly.Germany has the highest solar capacity in the world, but China is the world's largest market and the largest producer of solar technology.
Hydropower
The power of water turns turbines which produce electricity.Since ancient times, watermills have been used a lot. Most of the renewable energy in China comes from hydropower plants, such as the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest power station.
Geothermal
This has been a natural source of energy for thousands of years.Today, heat from below the earth's surface heats water into steam that turns turbines to generate electricity. The USA has the largest capacity, with over 80% generated in California. The Yangbajing Power Plant is the largest geothermal plant in China.
Wind
Tall turbines are turned by the wind to produce electricity.Wind “farms” are built on land, or offshore, to take advantage of more frequent and powerful winds at sea.The world's largest wind farm is the London Array. It has 175 wind turbines and is 20 km off the coast of England.Researchers think China could meet all her electricity demands from wind by 2030.Wind farms in provinces such as Gansu have an endless wind supply.

In the livestreaming(直播的)channel of Yang Weiyun, no singing or dancing is performed nor are products sold.Yang, 74 years old, teaches children Pinyin, reading and writing, something that has been most familiar to her for the past 50 years. But this time, her students are mostly adults.
In retirement, Yang also wanted to do something meaningful. The rise of short video platforms gave her the idea of continuing her education career through livestreaming online. She opened her livestreaming account in May 2021 and offered free Pinyin courses designed for illiterate(不识字的,文盲的)adults.
“Many illiterate adults didn't have the chance to go to school when they were young. They are the ones in urgent need of becoming literate.I wanted to give them a new starting point,” Yang said.Considering that most of the adult students have to make time to attend the lessons, Yang holds two livestream classes every day starting at 8:30 am and 8:30 pm.Her livestreaming channel offers an easy and private way for those who want to overcome adult illiteracy. Now she has nearly 400,000 followers on the short video platform.
Zhang Mei is among the students who benefits from Yang's livestream lessons. She was born and raised in the countryside and had never been to school. She found illiteracy brought challenges to her city life. She couldn't find suitable work. She also couldn't fill in forms or read the assignment from teachers for her children. She watches Yang's livestreaming whenever there is spare time. Now she can read Chinese characters if they are marked with Pinyin and knows how to write her name. She has also found a job.
Yang said she tried her best to figure out what ways the students can learn and remember better, and her biggest wish now is to see these students graduate from her classes.

If current global trends are correct, in 2025, around 41 million people will die from noncommunicable(非传染性的)diseases(NCDs), representing around 74 percent of all deaths globally. One of the main factors for the rise of NCDs is urbanization and research clearly shows that people who live in urban areas without access to green spaces have a higher risk of developing NCDs.
What is it about green spaces that provides resistance to NCDs? Greater opportunities to exercise, cleaner air, and less heat stress are all reasons that have been publicized—with evidence to support some roles of urban vegetation in these respects.
There is reliable scientific evidence that shows when we directly interact with nature, biochemical pathways are triggered in our bodies, which results in significant beneficial health impacts. This topic of research started with a group of Japanese scientists trying to determine the true benefits of forest bathing—shinrinyoku. The evidence that they found was so convincing that currently, in Japan, instead of medication, patients with certain NCDs are suggested spending time sitting in forests.
Another good news is that we can obtain similar health benefits in urban green spaces and with indoor plants.Clinical experiments show that something as simple as having a vase of roses on your desk, for instance, can significantly lower your blood pressure and bring about mental and physical calming. So too can having leafy plants in your home and office, particularly those with green and yellow leaves.
There are also significant health benefits to be obtained from hearing different sounds of naturetuneful bird songs in particular.Even viewing green scenery from a window has been shown to reduce stress and improve our cognitive performance.
This new body of clinical evidence means that, in 2025, clinicians will increasingly recommend interacting with nature instead of just taking drugs.Urban planners, on the other hand, will no longer consider green spaces as unworthy.Instead, nature will be seen as part of the critical facility of a healthy city.

(2025·湖南长沙三模·主题同源2025新课标Ⅰ卷D)
Microplastic pollution is severely damaging global food supplies by disrupting plants' ability to produce energy from sunlight, according to a recent study.Researchers estimate that 4% to 14% of main crops—wheat and rice—are already lost due to widespread microplastic pollution.Without urgent action, this crisis could push an additional 400 million people into hunger by 2043, worsening global food insecurity as the population is expected to reach 10 billion by 2058.
Microplastics, formed from brokendown plastic waste, have spread to ecosystems worldwide—from Mount Everest to deep oceans. They harm crops by blocking sunlight, polluting soil, and releasing poisonous chemicals. The study shows that land plants' energy production drops by 12%, while ocean algae—vital to marine food chains—declines by 7%.Asia suffers the largest crop losses(54-177 million tons yearly), making up half the global total.Europe's wheat and U.S.corn are also heavily affected, and annual seafood losses(1-24 million tons)threaten millions who rely on fish for protein.
Human health risks add urgency.Microplastics have been found in blood and brains, with possible links to heart disease.Professor Huan Zhong's team at Nanjing University warns,“Efforts to feed the growing population are now put at risk by plastic pollution.Reducing pollution is key to protecting food supplies.”The study, published in a major science journal, analyzed over 3,000 data points from 157 studies, though researchers stress the need for more data to improve predictions.
Global cooperation remains weak.Despite failed UN plastic treaty talks in 2022, scientists urge policymakers to focus on microplastics in new talks this August.Professor Richard Thompson at the University of Plymouth states, “While predictions may change, action cannot wait.A strong international agreement on microplastics is crucial for both food security and environmental health.”
As microplastics also threaten the ocean's ability to absorb CO2—through tiny ocean plants critical to fighting climate change—the study highlights a double crisis: failing food systems and ecological damage. With nations slow to act, time is running out to prevent irreparable harm to food supplies and the planet.

A.It may increase global hunger risks in the future.
B.It affects crops in Europe and the United States.
C.Its impact on plant growth is less severe than climate change.
D.It has already caused permanent damage to marine ecosystems.

A.How to reduce the plastic production levels.
B.How to ban plastic waste to support global efforts.
C.How to rapidly remove microplastics from marine ecosystems.
