What do you think of space exploration? Is it worth spending so much time and money? Or is it a waste of time and money?
Yes
No
Arguments FOR Space Exploration
Scientific Advancement
Answering fundamental questions about our universe, the origins of life, and our own planet.
Technological Innovation
Spinoffs like GPS, medical imaging, prosthetics, and water purification systems improve life on Earth.
Economic Growth
The global space economy is worth over $574 billion, creating millions of high-skilled jobs.
Yes
1.7.2013
Let's start with the arguments in favor of space exploration. First, it's a powerhouse for scientific discovery. Missions like the James Webb Telescope are rewriting astronomy books. Second, the technology we develop for space often comes back to help us here on Earth. Think about GPS in your phone or medical imaging that saves lives—many of these started as space projects. Third, it's a huge economic driver, creating jobs and fueling innovation. Fourth, looking far ahead, becoming a multi-planetary species could be crucial for our survival. And finally, it's inspiring! It makes us dream big and encourages young people to study science and engineering.

Arguments AGAINST Space Exploration
Prohibitive Cost
A single Mars mission costs $10-30B, while the ISS exceeded $150B. These are astronomical sums that could be allocated elsewhere.
Opportunity Cost: Earth Priorities
Funds could address urgent issues like global poverty (est. $175B/year), healthcare access, and climate change mitigation.
Risks & Ethical Concerns
• Human risk to astronauts & orbital debris threats.
• Planetary protection & ethical debates over resource exploitation rights.
No
1.7.2013
Now, let's consider the other side of the debate. The most obvious argument is the cost. We're talking about billions and billions of dollars. Critics ask: couldn't this money be better spent? For example, the cost of one Mars mission could make a huge difference in the fight against global poverty. This is called the 'opportunity cost'—what are we giving up by choosing space? Additionally, space exploration is risky for the astronauts involved and creates problems like space junk. There are also ethical questions: should we be contaminating other planets, and who gets to own the resources we find out there? These are all valid concerns that we must take seriously.

THE KEY QUESTION
Can we afford
NOT to explore space?
Let's discuss.
1.7.2013
So, after hearing both sides, where do you stand? It's clear that space exploration is not a simple waste of time and money, but it's also not without its significant costs and ethical challenges. The debate forces us to think about our priorities as a society. The key question might not be "can we afford to explore space?" but rather, "can we afford *not* to?" Abandoning space could mean giving up on future technologies, scientific breakthroughs, and the long-term security of our species. Now, I'd like to open the floor for discussion. What do you think? Is the pursuit of the stars worth the investment, or should we focus our efforts closer to home?

IS EXPLORING SPACE A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY?
Reading
Read the argumentative essay about space exploration.
Countries around the globe are spending billions of dollars and lots of time on various space missions, whether to Mars or other planets much further away. Some people argue that we should stop wasting time and money exploring space. Instead, we should feed the world’s poor and find immediate solutions to other problems, such as pollution and fatal diseases. However, others feel this is a shallow view which fails to realise how exploring space helps us.
Spend time/money doing sth
waste time/money doing sth
vt. & vi.
Solution to…
adj.
adj.
Why are some people against space exploration?
Because they think it is a waste of time and money, and that we should feed the world’s poor and find immediate solutions to other problems, such as pollution and fatal diseases, instead.
Firstly, exploring space has already made a difference in the fight against world hunger. It has directly resulted in the many satellites that now orbit Earth. A number of the satellites record data on land and weather patterns. Then the data is transmitted to scientists on Earth. After careful analysis, the scientists can provide useful recommendations and advice for farmers. As a result, space-based science has helped farming in its efforts to grow enough food to feed Earth’s increasing population.

To do 不定式作定语修饰food

A. Narration(记叙文)
B. Exposition(说明文)
C. Argumentation(议论文)
2. Can you divide it into three parts?
What has space exploration done for food production?

Secondly, space exploration has already promoted technological improvements that benefit us all. High-end products around the world are made to a higher standard now because of advanced technology which was first created to meet the requirements for space exploration. For example, space technologies have helped the research and development of different types of new material. They have also helped companies make better heart monitors and other machines that doctors regularly use. Today, space technologies are widely used in all kinds of industries, and everyday products, such as memory foam pillows and smartphone cameras, are changing our lives.

Finally, sending astronauts into space has helped people to think about the world’s problems and even to find ways to solve them. Seeing pictures of our planet as an island in a black sea made people realise that our planet’s resources are limited. In order to provide for such a rapidly increasing population, scientists are trying to find other planets that could one day be our new home. The greatest attention at present is on Mars because it is closer to Earth. In the future, humans may live on both planets.
