Teaching and learning procedure:
Step 1 Leading in and introduction (Opening Page)
Activity 1 Leading-in
Lead in the topic of this unit by talking about the theme of this unit—poems, using the following questions.
1. What does the photo on opening page show?
The photo shows a path through a peaceful-looking wood. The path branches two ways as it comes towards the viewer, reflecting the Robert Frost quote.
2. Do you understand the poem lines in the photo? Why did the poet take the road less travelled by? What difference do you think it had made to the poet? What emotion or feeling do you think the poet wanted to convey? Can you use your own words to explain them?
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference. — Robert Frost (罗伯特•弗罗斯特)
Suggested answer: I think the words in the photo do not mean an actual road in a wood, but mean a choice in the poet’s life. He made a choice that most people don’t, and he felt that it was the right decision.
Chinese meaning: 两条路在树林里分叉,我——我走了一条人迹罕至的路,这使得一切变得不同。
3. When you think of the words “poem” or “poetry”, what comes to your mind?
Theme/meaning/image: nature, love, friendship, …
Feelings/ Emotions: happiness, sorrow, anger, regret, …
Poetic devices: rhyme, simile, …
Possible answer: When I think of “poem” or “poetry”, I think of books and calligraphy. I also think about love poems and poems about nature, and I think about funny poems and serious poems.
Activity 2 Introduction
1. Introduce the learning objectives of this unit at the bottom of the opening page and make the students have a general idea of what they are going to learn in this unit. (Get the students to read the comprehensive learning objectives at the bottom of the page.)
2. Introduce the learning objectives of this period.
Step 2 Pre-reading
Activity 3 Pre-reading
Discuss the questions and share answers before reading.
1. Compared with other forms of literature such as the novel, drama, and the short story, what are the characteristics of poetry?
Suggested answer: Compared to other forms of literature, poetry tends to be shorter although a poem can be very long. Words are used differently, not in sentences and paragraphs like in novels, but lines and stanzas. Often grammar and punctuation are ignored or used differently. Poetry is more emotional, and the possibilities are much more open than in prose.
2. Why do you think people write poems?
Suggested answer: I think people write poetry to express deep thoughts and emotions in a concise way that can be more directly communicated with another person, the reader.
Step 3 While-reading
Activity 4 Reading comprehension of the main content
1. Skim the text to get the main idea and key information to answer the following questions.
1) What does the passage mainly discuss?
The text is mainly about the characteristics of five forms of English poems and examples of these poems.
2) How many parts can it be divided into?
Three parts.
Part1 (Paragraph 1) Brief introduction—Reasons for people composing poetry.
Part2 (Paragraphs 2-6) Five forms of poems and their characteristics (and examples of these poems).
Part 3 (Paragraph 7) Conclusion—to encourage readers to write their own poems.
3) How many types of English poems are mentioned? What are they?
A. Nursery rhymes B. List poem C. Cinquain D. Tang poetry E. Haiku
2. Learn about how to comprehend poetry.
Poetry comprehension: Poems paint pictures with words through the use of figures of speech and metaphors, so to understand a poem fully, you have to imagine in your mind the picture the poem is painting. Further, the sounds, rhythm, and rhymes in a poem give it a musical quality. Poems often have to be read aloud, and with feeling, to be really understood and enjoyed.
3. Read the text again and complete the following reading comprehension tasks.
1) Read Paragraph 1 carefully and answer the two questions.
(1) What are the two important points mentioned in Paragraph 1?
The reasons why people compose poetry and the characteristics of poetry.
(2) According to the text, what are the characteristics of poetry?
The characteristics of poetry often include economical use of words, descriptive and vivid language, integrated imagery, literary devices such as simile, metaphor; arrangement of words and lines, rhymes, and rhythm.
2) Read Paragraphs 2-6 to complete the form.
