up the next morning to find Dooner missing. He searched
everywhere but found no trace of his beloved pet.Days
later,as Dooner roamed the streets,he stumbled upon
Kim's father's wallet lying on the ground at the market.
Paragraph 2:
Although Dooner had left the house for several days,he
decided to pick up Kim's father's wallet on the ground of the
market and returned it.As he approached the house,he saw
Kim's father frantically searching for something.Under-
standing the situation,Dooner carefully placed the wallet at
Kim's father's feet and barked to get his attention.
Surprised and grateful,Kim's father picked up the wallet
and looked at Dooner with newfound respect. He realized
that the dog was more than just a pet;he was a loyal and
intelligent companion.From that day on,Kim's father's
attitude towards Dooner changed, and he welcomed him
back into their home with open arms.

56.existing 57.was built 58.against/from 59.
effectively 60.to protect 61.has started 62.
construction 63.It 64.that/which 65.a
Great
故填was bulit。
58.against/from【解析】考查固定搭配。“defend.
against/from.”
against/from.
effectively。
Akey
task of the station是主语,is为谓语动词,所以protect
故填to protect。.
6l.has started【
故填has started。
因为and遵
64.that/which【解析】考查定语从句。
that或which。故填that/which。
填a。

him another apologetic smile,I begged him for a delayed
payment."If I miss this last bus to Prague,I'll be late for
the conference which is so important that I can't afford to
miss it!"I explained."May I have your phone number?I
will call you and return the money I owe you.I promise I
will keep my word or you keep my watch!"I added,
handing him my watch as well as my business card.Gunter
accepted my business card but rejected my watch. He
wrote down his phone number and gave it to me."Just
keep your promise,Sir."A feeling of gratitude washed
over me as I heard his words.Giving him a firm
handshake,I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the
142
bus,and jumped onto it just before its departure
Paragraph 2:
Four days later, when I was back in Vienna,I called
Gunter as promised. He picked me up at the bus station
where he had dropped me off four days before.Beaming a
warm smile at him,I gave him a big hug the moment I saw
him.We chatted happily on the way to the airport.I told
him that thanks to his generosity and timely help,
everything had gone smoothly. When he stopped his taxi
outside the airport,I paid him for the "double car ride",
back and forth from the airport to the bus station, together
with a generous tip that he turned down.I also gave him an
attractive souvenir I had bought in Prague, which he
accepted with delight. We became good friends and kept in
touch with each other regularly.I felt blessed to have such
a warm-hearted friend like Gunter
