Born in 1874 in Clifton, she led a life full of both joy and sadness. When she was very young, her mother died because of illness. Her father couldn’t take care of her alone, so she went to live with her grandparents. Growing up, she often felt lonely without many friends of her age, but this helped her develop a strong imagination. At 6, she started school and began writing poems and keeping a diary. In 1893, Montgomery attended Prince of Wales College to get a teaching license. She finished the two-year course in just one year. After that, she worked as a teacher while also writing short stories. In 1897, her first short story was published, and over the next 10 years, she published around 100 more. The year 1908 was a turning point for Montgomery. She published Anne of Green Gables, a story about a girl without parents living in a small town. The book became very popular not only in Canada but also around the world. It made her a well-known writer. However, Montgomery’s personal life wasn’t always easy. Her husband was in low spirits, and she faced many hard times during and after World War I. She even went to court because her publisher didn’t give her the money she deserved. Although Montgomery faced so many challenges, she continued to write. She created many wonderful stories, including the Emily of New Moon series. She published 20 novels, over 500 short stories and more in her lifetime. Montgomery died in 1942, but her works are still loved by people all over the world. (B) My father was a successful businessman. I had two elder brothers. One of them worked in the army and was killed during the war. The other was missing one day, and we never knew what had happened to him. My father gave me a good education and wanted me to be a lawyer. However, I wanted to be a sailor and go to sea. My father was very angry with me. He didn’t understand why I wanted to leave our house, where I would have an easy and comfortable life. “Two kinds of people go to sea,” he said. “They are the very poor people and the very rich people. The poor have no other way to live. The rich own ships and can make money with them. You are neither too poor nor too rich. You are in the middle, so you should choose a middle way for your life. Stay at home with your mother and me. Your elder brother didn’t listen to me, and now he is dead. If you do not listen to me, you will have a difficult life.” I tried to do what he wanted me to do, but I couldn’t. I spoke to my mother. “Please ask my father if he will let me have one voyage(航海)by sea,” I asked her. “When I return, I will live the life he wants me to live.” My mother was angry. “Your father will not let you go. I don’t want you to go to sea either. It’s dangerous.” I argued with my parents for another year. Then, I went to Hull with a friend who was going to London by ship. He grew up in the forest, learning to hunt, fight, and survive the cruel snow and ice. The world he knew was hard—only the strong lived, and the weak died. He learned to snarl and bite to protect himself, to run fast to catch food, and to hide from bigger, fiercer animals. One day, White Fang met Gray Beaver, a Native American man. Gray Beaver caught him and took him to the human village. For the first time, White Fang lived with humans. He did not understand their ways, and he hated being tied up. The village dogs bullied him, and he had to fight them every day. He became a fierce fighter, winning every battle, and the dogs soon feared him. Gray Beaver was proud of his strength and kept him close. White Fang learned to obey humans, but his heart was still wild. He loved the forest, the wind, and the freedom of running alone. Yet he also learned to trust Gray Beaver, who was kind to him sometimes, giving him food and a warm place to sleep. Life in the village was different from the wild—there was food every day, but no freedom. White Fang was caught between two worlds: the wild where he was born, and the human world that now held him. As the months passed, White Fang grew bigger and stronger. His yellow eyes were sharp, and his teeth were like knives. All in the village knew him, and all feared him. But he was loyal to Gray Beaver, the first human who had ever shown him a little kindness. He would stand by Gray’s side, snarl at anyone who came near, and protect his master with his life. 32.Where was White Fang born? A.The wild cold North. B.Gray Beaver’s house. C.A southern human village. D.A warm forest with animals. 33.Why did village dogs fear White Fang? A.He was protected by Gray Beaver. B.He won all fights against them. C.He was the biggest dog in the village. D.He ran faster than all other animals. 34.Why was White Fang caught between two worlds? A.He hated Gray Beaver but couldn’t escape. B.He loved the wild but also trusted humans. C.He won all fights but was still afraid of dogs. D.He had food in the wild but freedom in the village. 35.What is the main idea of the passage? A.White Fang beat all village dogs. B.White Fang’s hard life in the wild North. C.Gray Beaver caught White Fang for strength. D.White Fang’s life from wild to human village. The man was called Agathon, which in Greek means “good and kind.” Agathon was a miller (磨坊主), and he worked hard at his mill every day. The boy was called Tebelis. Most boys liked to be active playing with their friends and even helping at home. Tebelis liked none of these things. Instead, he liked to sleep. He slept in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening. People said Tebelis was the laziest boy in all of Greece. In fact, his very name meant “lazy.” Summer turned to fall, and people began bringing their grain to Agathon’s mill. Agathon placed the grain on a large, flat stone. He placed another stone, called a millstone, on top. He then tied a cow to the millstone. As the cow turned the millstone, the grain turned into soft flour (面粉). Some said that Agathon’s flour was the finest in the land. One morning, Agathon took a trip to visit a friend. He left Tebelis in charge of the mill. “Take care, my son,” Agathon said before he left. “Watch the cow carefully. She can be lazy, just like you. Make sure she keeps working.” Tebelis watched the cow. At first, she turned the millstone quickly. Then she started moving slower, slower, slower. Finally, she stopped moving. The cow seemed tired and sick. “Well,” Tebelis smiled, “I suppose that’s enough work for one day.” He lay down on the ground and closed his eyes. Suddenly, Alexander, the King of Greece and his men came, they asked Tebelis to mill some grain. Unluckily, Tebelis’s cow was sick. But Alexander smiled. “I’m sure you will think of something. This afternoon, you will have grain, and you will have one week to mill it.” He bowed deeply as the king and his men hurried away. Then he sat on the ground, shaking, tears filling his eyes. All day, Tebelis replayed the scene over and over in his mind. “There must be an answer,” he said to himself, but he knew the situation was hopeless. Finally, Tebelis had an idea and he built a watermill. The watermill was a great success. In just a few days, they managed to mill each and every basket of Alexander’s grain. 61.Why did people think Tebelis was the laziest boy in all of Greece before? 62.How did Agathon make flour at first? 63.How did Tebelis feel when the king ordered him to mill all the grain in a week? His mother was half wolf, half dog, and his father was a full-blooded wolf. Why? 64.What did Tebelis do to solve the problem? 65.What do you think of Tebelis? 【答案】61.Because he liked sleeping all day. 62.By tying a cow to the millstone. 63.He felt hopeless because his cow was sick. 64.He built a watermill. 65.He’s lazy but smart. 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,文章主要讲述了希腊一个农场里,磨坊主Agathon的儿子Tebelis原本很懒,但在国王命令他一周内磨完谷物时,他最终想出办法建造水磨解决了问题。 61.根据“Tebelis liked none of these things. Instead, he liked to sleep. He slept in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening. People said Tebelis was the laziest boy in all of Greece.”可知,Tebelis喜欢睡觉,早上、下午、晚上都睡,所以人们认为他是全希腊最懒的男孩。故填Because he liked sleeping all day. 62.根据“He then tied a cow to the millstone. As the cow turned the millstone, the grain turned into soft flour.”可知,Agathon一开始通过把牛拴在磨石上来制作面粉。故填By tying a cow to the millstone. 63.根据“Then he sat on the ground, shaking, tears filling his eyes.”和“but he knew the situation was hopeless”以及“Unluckily, Tebelis’s cow was sick.”可知,当国王命令Tebelis在一周内磨完所有谷物时,他感到绝望和无助,因为他的牛生病了。故填He felt hopeless because his cow was sick. 64.根据“Finally, Tebelis had an idea and he built a watermill.”可知,Tebelis建造了一个水磨来解决这个问题。故填He built a watermill. 65.开放性作答,结合实际,言之有理即可。参考答案为He’s lazy but smart. 七、短文填空(10分) 根据短文内容和首字母提示,在下文空格处填入适当的词使短文完整,每空一词。 Aunt Polly told Tom to paint the fence and he felt unhappy.
