Activity 5
Read the passage for detailed information.
The author starts the passage with three questions. What functions do they serve?
The questions get the readers engaged by arousing their curiosity.
Mentioning several typical artworks with questions can stimulate readers’ previous knowledge about the topic of art.
The third question naturally serves as a transition, leading to Para 2.
simile
Do artists master the usage of tools and technologies?
Why is Michelangelo labelled as an “artist” rather than a “technician”?
Yes! For instance, a painter needs to understand the chemistry of pigments; a sculptor should know the physics of stone...
Because Michelangelo produced his artworks with creativity, philosophy, and emotions while a technician only knows how to use tools and technologies.
3. Do you agree?
Today, however, technological advances have led to a combination of art and technology. As a result, the art world is changing greatly. Now art is more accessible to us than ever before. Take for example one of China’s most famous paintings from the Song Dynasty, Along the RiverDuring the Qingming Festival. As this artwork is rarely on display, people have sometimes queued up to six hours for a chance to see it. Once in front of the painting, they only have limited time to spend taking in its five metres of scenes along the Bian River in Bianjing. Thanks to technology however, millions more people have been able to experience a digital version of this painting. Three-dimensional (3D) animation means that viewers can see the characters move around and interact with their surroundings. They can also watch as the different scenes change from daylight into nighttime.
Compare the experiences visitors get from either version of Along the River During the Qingming Festival.

Think & Share
Activity 5
The relationship is no longer about "Art VS Technology." Instead, it is about "Cultural Soul + Technological Body." Technology provides the "modern fire" to activate traditional art, while traditional art provides the aesthetic depth and historical weight that prevents technology from being merely cold and functional.
Debate
Think deeper about the following materials and hold a debate about whether technology has had a positive effect on art.
Of course!
Not exactly!
Technology brings more inspiration and expression to new artistic creation;
Technology enables art display across time and space, creating richer art forms;
Technology has given more people access to art and art lovers more platforms.
…
Computer-generated designs are cold, rigid, lacking in human touch and vitality;
Blind pursuit of quick success and quantity may produce empty design;
People are overly obsessed with the convenience of technology, ignoring the theme and beauty within.
