Free Mind Mapping Tools for Students
The following are the most popular free mind mapping tools which are easy to use, allow collaboration with other students, and have many features that make assignments, organization and planning much more efficient.
Xmind
This is an open source tool with some unique features. You can export any map in other formats — PDF, TXT, JPEG, etc. It has tree, logic and fishbone charts, for personal preference and depending upon your project. The basic account is free but, as you add features, the price can go up to $80.
Mindmeister
This tool is online, so that it can be accessed from anywhere and with any device. You can use it solo or collaborate with other students if you are involved in a group project. The live chat feature makes it even more attractive.
Bubbl.us
This is one of the simplest mind mapping tools to be found. Once you type your main idea or topic, the tree begins. You may then type in “sub-level” terms, and they are automatically placed. You can then move the bubbles around. There is also an auto-save feature and, because it is online, you can collaborate with others. The disadvantage of this app is that you cannot add images, links, or files unless you purchase the high-end version.
MindMap
This tool can be used locally or in the cloud and allows the printing and exporting of completed maps. The other great feature is that you can add text, images, links, etc. and customize (定制) color so that subtopics are easily recognizable.
1. What can we learn about Xmind?
A. It remembers users’ preferences.
B. It offers discounted memberships.
C. It is independent of users’ project.
D. It outputs completed maps in various forms.
2. What should you do if you want to use more functions of Bubbl.us?
A. Pay extra money. B. Get a basic account.

Farmers like Anthony and Juan Gabriel are celebrated examples of ordinary folk who believe you can do anything you set your mind on.
The two brothers are the fourth generation from a 130-year-old family farm in Andalusia, Spain. When they took over the farm in 2005, the challenge they faced was common for most olive (橄榄) growers: they couldn’t sell their olive oil at its true price.
As with wine, factors like organic or conventional, temperature and rainfall, regional differences, and the type of harvesting and extraction process, all have a huge effect on taste and aromas (香气). Olive oil producers, by contrast, can’t sell their story or try to differentiate like, for example, winemakers. It is a missed opportunity if you don’t learn how to communicate this to potential customers.
Anthony and Juan choose to differentiate, advocating that “great taste is a result of working together with nature”. They promote techniques that benefit biodiversity. They apply advanced techniques to restore the soil, which in return produces the perfect fruit.
Great taste is an easily made claim if you don’t have a certificate to prove it. So the brothers entered independent taste awards to back it up. In the last four years, they have been awarded by different international olive oil competitions, which have placed their product as one of the best organic olive oils in the world. Now, they are looking into Demeter and Bio Suisse, two leading organic farming certification standards, to make their oil stand out from the crowd in a more permanent way.
The brothers sell their olive oil to stores and directly to consumers through their website. With a good product and a unique story, 35% of their sales now come from repeat customers. This allows them to grow their business at a steady pace. Anthony’s passion is confirmed once again when he tells the story of a loyal customer who hides the olive oil from her husband and says, “It’s too good to share.”
4. What does the underlined word “story” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Why the olive oil is produced. B. Where the olive oil originates.
C. What makes the olive oil special. D. How customers like the olive oil.
5. Why do the Gabriel brothers use advanced techniques?
A. To keep costs down. B. To produce more oil.
C. To grow various olives. D. To practice sustainable farming.
6. How do the brothers make their olive oil’s quality convincing?
A. By defining olive oil standards. B. By having it officially confirmed.
C. By switching to organic farming. D. By expanding their business rapidly.
7. What does the last paragraph suggest about the brothers’ olive oil?
A. It finally recovers the costs.
B. It beats other olive oil brands.
C. Differentiation helps it make a name.
D. The consumer demand is hard to meet.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. B 7. C
【解析】

Britain’s unique take on humor may seem confusing at first. But fear not, we’ve put together a beginner’s guide to understanding it.
The key to understanding British humor is not to take it too seriously. Their humor is to highlight their own faults. They make light of their own failures so as to appear more humble, approachable and relatable. There is no room for egos (自尊) in British humor. Embarrassing moments are common self-deprecation (自嘲) material.
Self-deprecation mixed with sarcasm (讽刺) forms the key of British humor. Sarcasm and irony are rooted in their DNA. Their humor is produced with world-class timing and nearly always with an expressionless delivery that will leave you wondering whether it was indeed a joke. Sarcasm can be hard to spot in a new language and a new culture, and in Britain the usual clues of overstatement and an overemphasis on adjectives are stressed even less, making it harder to pick up. Luckily, sarcasm is used so often in day-to-day life that you will soon be a natural at detecting it.
Being polite by nature, Brits may playfully “offend” people they like with tongue-in-cheek comments. These are not mean, but a light verbal exchange with a smile, which can bridge differences and start conversations, though such comments need to suit the occasion.
Brits find humor in almost everything. Brits use humor to lighten even the most unfortunate, miserable moments. There are few subjects they don’t joke about. Brits turn to laughter as a form of medicine when life knocks them and those around them down. In most cultures, there is a time and place for humor. In Britain, this is not the case.
8. What do Brits tend to do according to paragraph 2?
A. Make fun of themselves. B. Laugh at others’ failures.
C. Pay attention to their egos. D. Avoid embarrassing experiences.
9. What do we learn about Brits’ sarcasm?
A. It’s regarded as impolite.
B. It’s shown with overstatement.
C. It’s delivered in noticeable ways.
D. It’s quite common among the Brits.
10. What can we learn about Brits from the last paragraph?
A. They often tell jokes improperly.
B. They have an optimistic attitude to life.
C. They like to argue with others humorously.
D. They show their sense of humor on specific occasions.
11. Which can be the suitable title for the text?
A. Where Do the Brits Find Humor? B. Why Are the Brits So Humorous?
C. How Do We Understand British Humor? D. What Makes British Humor So Puzzling?
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. B 11. C

Although picture quality has improved greatly with the development of flat-screen televisions, sound has taken a dive. The problem is that TVs with slimmed-down screens have insufficient room for good speakers to be fitted to them, either at the back or in the frame. Such televisions are therefore usually connected to an external sound system to improve their sound quality.
Early TV loudspeakers were as big as the screen, but engineers have got good at making speakers smaller and explored new sound-producing methods, like employing an actuator (致动器) to vibrate (振动) a flexible panel. That raises the question: Why not vibrate the TV screen itself? And this is just what a couple of television-makers are now doing.
Company A was the first to announce it had developed such a system, which is called Acoustic Surface. It is now fitting this to some of its luxurious televisions. Acoustic Surface employs a pair of actuators to vibrate a screen made with organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Unlike screens that employ regular inorganic LEDs as a backlight, OLEDs give off their light directly. This means OLED screens have few layers — and that, in turn, means they can be more flexible and are able to vibrate more easily. This vibration is invisible to the viewer and does not affect picture quality. One beneficial consequence is that a program’s soundtrack is broadcast directly to the viewer instead of from the side, as is the case with separate speakers.
The other version on offer is Cinematic Sound from Company B. This includes, as one of the screen’s layers, a 600-micron-thick film that works as an “exciter” to vibrate the display.
They are all very attractive and have caught most people’s attention. However, those who are enthusiastic about accurate sound reproduction still prefer separate sound systems.
12. What is a problem with flat-screen televisions?
A. They have poor sound quality.
B. They offer low picture quality.
C. They can’t meet viewers’ demands.
D. They can’t be connected to external sound systems.
13. What makes OLED screens suitable for Acoustic Surface?
A. Their large size. B. Their few layers.
C. Their flexible structure. D. Their direct light emission.
14. What do Acoustic Surface and Cinematic Sound have in common?
A. They use fewer actuators.
B. They employ thin films as exciters.
C. They produce sound by vibrating the TV screen.
D. They guarantee the soundtracks broadcast from the side.
15. What can we infer about people who pursue precise sound effect?
A. They like slim flat-screen TVs best.
B. They don’t care about TV picture quality.
C. They are satisfied with early TV loudspeakers.
D. They won’t choose screen-vibrating sound systems.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. D

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Acoustic Surface employs a pair of actuators to vibrate a screen made with organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Unlike screens that employ regular inorganic LEDs as a backlight, OLEDs give off their light directly. This means OLED screens have few layers — and that, in turn, means they can be more flexible and are able to vibrate more easily.(Acoustic Surface使用一对致动器来振动由有机发光二极管(OLED)制成的屏幕。与使用常规无机LED作为背光的屏幕不同,OLED直接发光。这意味着OLED屏幕的层数很少——反过来,这意味着它们可以更灵活,更容易振动。)”可知,OLED屏幕适合用于Acoustic Surface是因为它们的层数少。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Acoustic Surface employs a pair of actuators to vibrate a screen made with organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).(Acoustic Surface使用一对致动器来振动由有机发光二极管(OLED)制成的屏幕。)”和第四段“The other version on offer is Cinematic Sound from Company B. Understanding articles on cutting-edge technology, such as artificial intelligence or quantum (量子) computing, demands targeted strategies as follows that go far beyondgeneral reading comprehension skills.
● Preview to Identify Structure
Before focusing on a close reading, invest time in previewing the entire article. Note all section headings and their logical order. This initial mapping is not merely passive viewing; it actively prepares your mind to follow the author’s logical framework, whether it presents a cause-effect chain, or a problem-solution model. ____16____
● Question the Evidence and Data
Merely understanding the surface claim of a technological breakthrough is far from sufficient for true comprehension. ____17____ You must develop a habit of checking the data sources, sample sizes, and the presence of control groups. This critical method, questioning how conclusions are reached, is what separates an informed reader from one who simply accepts information at face value, especially when findings seem revolutionary.
● ____18____
Beyond the stated facts and figures, a deeper layer of understanding involves analyzing the author’s perspective and intention. ____19____ Is the language overstating, cautiously optimistic, or objective? Identifying these tiny differences, including the choice of persuasive adjectives or the structure of argumentation, reveals the intended influence on the reader and provides crucial context for evaluating the information’s objectivity and potential bias.
● Integrate and Seek Connections
Finally, to move from separate facts to integrated knowledge, actively connect this new information to your existing mental models. ____20____ Does this new discovery confirm, challenge, or entirely expand upon established principles? Engaging in this process, that is, asking how it fits into the broader scientific or technological landscape, transforms an individual data point into meaningful, long-lasting understanding and insight.
A. Analyze how the writer starts.
B. A doubting approach is essential.
C. Explore the writer’s hidden information.
D. This means relating it to known principles.
E. Grasping the core argument precisely is the first goal.
F. Telling fact reporting from persuading intention comes first.
G. Understanding this outline is fundamental for further reading.
【答案】16. G 17. B 18. C 19. F 20. D

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day in the early 1980s in Pennsylvania, a truck stopped in the parking lot with a load of old typewriters (打字机) from around the globe for sale. David stopped by and found a large metal disc (圆盘) very special. It weighed around 30 pounds and measured about 30 inches across, covered in thousands of precisely designed Chinese characters. It was nothing like anything he had ever seen before, yet David knew for sure it was part of a Chinese typewriter. He offered $17 — all the cash in his wallet — and rolled the disc to his car. Back home, he kept the beloved collection in a workshop among tools, car parts and poetry magazines.
Last summer, the local library was planning an exhibition of historic typewriters. David remembered his disc and took it to consult Kathryn Dillon, a technician at the library. Dillon thought it was so beautiful and so unusual but she knew little about it. She realized it needed to be figured out. So she sent photos of the disc to Tom Mullaney, a professor and historian in Stanford University.
It was a shocking moment for Mullaney when he saw the pictures, because he knew it was the key part of the first Chinese typewriter, MingKwai. Mullaney once wrote a book on the MingKwai so he knew the story of it quite well.
The MingKwai, meaning “clear and fast” in Chinese, was proof of a far more elegant possibility. Produced in 1947, it had only 72 keys. The typewriter’s inventor was the well-known Chinese writer, translator and linguist Lin Yutang. For some reasons, the MingKwai was never mass-produced. The MingKwai simply disappeared, but its significance lived on. It’s the great-great parent of the entire Chinese digital age, at least in terms of human-computer interaction. Now that the key part of the first Chinese typewriter was rediscovered, Mullaney wouldn’t let it disappear again. He responded at once.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Knowing the disc was on display in the library, Mullaney immediately went there.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After the exhibition, David decided to donate it to Stanford for further research.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Knowing the disc was on display in the library, Mullaney immediately went there. Mullaney, who had been eagerly anticipating this moment, examined the disc carefully and confirmed that it was indeed the missing part of the MingKwai typewriter. He was thrilled to see it in person and thanked David for preserving such a valuable piece of history. Mullaney explained the significance of the disc, saying that it was not just a relic but a key to understanding the early days of Chinese typing technology.
After the exhibition, David decided to donate it to Stanford for further research. He believed that the disc belonged in a place where it could be studied and appreciated by more people. Mullaney was grateful for David’s generosity and promised that the disc would be used to shed light on the history of Chinese typewriters. He said that what David did was really meaningful, for it would help more people learn about the history of Chinese typewriters. With David’s donation, the research on the MingKwai typewriter could continue, and its story could be shared with the world.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Knowing the disc was on display in the library, Mullaney immediately went there.
