Not many people knew that little Jack’s big brother was the famous reporter Ernie Jackson, who worked for the Calgary Times.
One Saturday, Ernie told Jack that he was investigating (调查) a very difficult case and that he was worried he couldn’t solve it. The case was about Modeline Mulrooney, the richest woman in Calgary. Her diamond ring was missing.
“She thinks her swimming coach took it,” Ernie said. “However, he says he hasn’t stolen anything. I’m not sure who to believe.”
“I’ll help you,” said Jack. “Let’s interview Mrs. Mulrooney together.”
The brothers went to Mrs. Mulrooney’s home. Mrs. Mulrooney explained what happened. She said that she always put her ring on the coffee table before she swam in her pool. “The water in the pool isn’t good for my ring, and it also dries my skin,” she said. “I always put on hand cream and wear cotton gloves to bed.”
“Where are the gloves now?” Jack asked.
“I throw them away each morning,” she said, pointing to a rubbish bin.
Jack rushed over to the bin. He searched through it and pulled out many gloves. Carefully, he felt each one, and then he smiled.
“Your ring is right here,” said Jack. “The cream was slippery, so your ring came off with this glove. You only noticed it after swimming.”
“You solved the case?” shouted Ernie.
“You’re my hero!” said Mrs. Mulrooney.
The next day, the headline of the Calgary Times read, “Young Reporter Discovers Missing Diamond!” Jack was excited and wondered if there were any more cases to solve.
5. Why did Mrs. Mulrooney take off her ring before swimming?
A. Because she was afraid to lose her ring.
B. Because her coach warned her not to wear it.
C. Because she planned to put it with her gloves.
D. Because the water might do harm to her ring.
6. What does the underlined word “slippery” mean in this story?
A. Dry and very hard to move. B. Heavy and thick, like the glue.
C. Smooth and easy to fall off. D. Shiny and bright, like a diamond.
7. What’s the CORRECT order of the story?
① The woman couldn’t find her ring.
② Jack asked the woman about her daily habit.
③ Jack learned about the case from his brother.
④ The woman told Ernie the case.
A. ①-④-②-③ B. ③-②-①-④ C. ①-④-③-② D. ③-②-④-①
8. What’s the best title for the story?
A. A Stolen Diamond Ring B. A Wise Case Solver
C. A Shameful Swimming Coach D. A Boy’s Lucky Discovery
【答案】5. D 6. C 7. C 8. B

【5题详解】
第五段指出:“The water in the pool isn’t good for my ring, and it also dries my skin.”,说明穆鲁尼女士游泳前摘下戒指是因为水会损害她的戒指。
【6题详解】

On January 4th, the China National Traditional Orchestra (中央民族乐团) played some well-known traditional music in their concert. Audiences (观众) enjoyed the beautiful sounds of guzheng, the powerful tones of suona, the tearful notes of erhu and so on. Each traditional Chinese musical instrument tells its own story.
“I’ve fallen in love with the sounds of traditional instruments, especially pipa, a four-stringed instrument with a history of more than 2,000 years. It can produce different sounds, such as the falling snow and raindrops. Every time I listen to a pipa tone, I have a strong feeling of peace,” said Yang Tian, one of the audiences of the concert.
However, a recent report suggests the number of traditional music listeners is dropping. To wake up people’s love for traditional music, something creative has been done.
In some traditional music concerts, VR (虚拟现实) technology is used to bring the starry sky or the beautiful sandy view of Dunhuang to the music hall. It makes the experience like watching a 3D movie.
Li Xiaobing, a music teacher from Beijing, mixes traditional folk singing and operas with Chinese instruments through technology. People are surprised at his works and they love them!
Some musicians try to add something new to traditional music. They bring modern music like pop and rap into traditional music. When the East meets the West, the new form of music wins the hearts of both the old and the young.
Traditional music shows the beauty of our culture, and with some creativity, great things happen.
9. How many traditional Chinese musical instruments are mentioned in the passage?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
10. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Pipa can produce the most sounds in nature.
B. Chinese music has a longer history than western music.
C. Fewer people show interest in traditional music recently.
D. Different musical instruments can tell the stories in the same way.
11. To wake up people’s love for traditional music, Li Xiaobing ________.
A. tells many tearful stories with Chinese instruments B. makes good 3D movies with VR technology
C. mixes traditional folk singing and operas with Chinese instruments D. brings modern music into traditional music
12. According to the passage, the writer believes ________.

D. traditional music with creativity will be more popular

①Have you ever seen a wooden barrel (桶)? It is made of many wooden pieces held together by metal rings. The Wooden Barrel Effect, also called the “Cask Effect”, is a famous idea that comes from watching how a barrel works.
②Think about a barrel with wooden pieces of different lengths. Some pieces are long, but one piece is very short. When you fill this barrel with water, what will happen? The water will rise until it reaches the top of the shortest piece. Then it will begin to leak out (漏出). No matter how long the other pieces are, the barrel can never hold more water than the shortest piece allows.
③The effect teaches us something important. In a team, the weakest part often decides success. For example, in a basketball team, if one player keeps missing passes, the whole team may lose games. The team’s performance is limited by its weakest member.
④This also works for personal growth. Each of us has strengths and weaknesses. Our weaknesses are like the short piece. To make progress, we should find our “short pieces” and improve them. For example, a student who may do well in math but has difficulty with English needs to spend more time and energy improving his English skills.
⑤However, there is another way to think about it. Sometimes, instead of fixing the short piece, we can change how we use the barrel. We can tilt (倾斜) it so that water flows to the longer pieces. This means we can make good use of our strengths while managing our weaknesses.
⑥In short, the Wooden Barrel Effect reminds us that success needs balance. Whether in teamwork or personal development, we should focus on weaknesses while making the most of our strengths.
13. What decides how much water a barrel can hold in Paragraph 2?
A. The longest piece of the barrel. B. The total number of pieces.
C. The shortest piece of the barrel. D. The total length of all pieces.
14. How does the writer explain the Wooden Barrel Effect?
A. By giving examples. B. By telling stories. C. By asking questions. D. By listing reasons.
15. What can we infer from Paragraph 5 about dealing with weaknesses?
A. Fixing weaknesses is always the perfect choice.
B. Weaknesses will disappear if we don’t focus on them.
C. Strengths become weaker when we focus on weaknesses.
D. Success can be achieved by making full use of our strengths.
16. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. ①②③/④⑤/⑥ B. ①/②③/④⑤⑥
C. ①②/③/④⑤⑥ D. ①②/③④/⑤/⑥
【答案】13. C 14. A 15. D 16. D

四、阅读与表达(共4小题,41~43小题,每小题2分,44小题4分;满分10分)
阅读短文,然后根据内容回答问题。
Is it ever OK to lie to a child? My 10-year-old son plays soccer. He’s not very good at it, but he loves it. Yesterday he played very badly but happily. When he finished the game, he asked, “Did I play well?” I said, “Yes! You are a great soccer player!” Did I do the right thing?
——Marisa
Yes, you did the right thing. Sometimes you have to tell lies that are not harmful. It’s necessary to tell white lies in life. Your purpose was to make him feel good. Now he’s ready to play soccer again.
——Bay 212
I don’t think there is ever a good reason to lie to our children. Parents are children’s examples. We should be honest in order to teach honesty to our children. If you keep hiding the truth from them, they will not trust you or respect you. Honesty is the first step to build a good relationship between parents and children.
——Bernie
You lied to make your son feel better, but you missed a good chance to teach him a life lesson. People should work hard for what they want. Maybe next time you can say, “No! You didn’t play well today. Great soccer players practice a lot. Let’s go and practice.” The truth will make him strong and a good soccer player.
——Missy
Parents should be honest to their children, but they don’t have to tell the whole truth. Next time when your son asks, “Did I play well?” you can say, “What do you think?” Then your son can tell you what he thinks. That way, everything you say is true, and you avoid the truth that hurts him.
——Parviz
41. What topic are they talking about?
___________________________________
42. Why is it necessary to tell children white lies in life according to Bay 212?
___________________________________
43. What opinion do Bernie and Missy have in common?
___________________________________
44. Whose opinion do you agree with? Why? Write 30 words or more.
___________________________________
【答案】41. They are talking about whether it is OK to lie to children.
42. Because telling white lies can make children feel good and keep them positive, they will be ready to try again (like playing soccer again).
43. They both think that it is not good to lie to children.
44. I agree with Parviz. I think parents should be honest but don’t have to tell the whole truth. They can guide children to think for themselves, which protects children’s feelings and keeps honesty at the same time.
第一段引出了一位母亲的问题“Is it ever OK to lie to a child?”,下面都是围绕这个事情的对错来进行的讨论。所以他们讨论的话题就是母亲的问题“对孩子撒谎是否正确?”
【42题详解】
Bay 212告知了说善意的谎言的必要原因“Your purpose was to make him feel good. Now he’s ready to play soccer again”,原因可以引用原文。
【43题详解】
Bernie说“I don’t think there is ever a good reason to lie to our children”,Missy说“You lied to make your son … but you missed a good chance to teach him a life lesson”,两者的共同处都是认为谎言对孩子不好
【44题详解】
本题是开放性试题,答案不唯一,但观点需基于文中事实,结合文章内容和自己对“跟孩子撒谎”的看法、理由,合理作答即可。

【答案】
Dear Bill,
Thanks for your letter. And it’s a good chance for me to share my middle school life. In my eyes, it is “unforgettable”. I still remember clearly that once I failed a difficult math exam. I felt so upset that I even wanted to give up. However, my math teacher talked to me patiently and told me not to lose heart. My classmates also offered to help me review lessons after class. With their support and my hard work, I finally made great progress in math. This experience taught me that difficulties can always be overcome with kindness, support and effort. I will always cherish these warm memories.
Yours,
Li Hua

A. traditional music should only be played in concerts
B. the ways to play traditional music must be changed
C. traditional music must remain unchanged all the time
D. traditional music with creativity will be more popular

A. ①②③/④⑤/⑥ B. ①/②③/④⑤⑥
C. ①②/③/④⑤⑥ D. ①②/③④/⑤/⑥

——Parviz
