3. appreciate the author’s useful writing depicting people’s actions and feelings during the volcanic eruption;

学情分析
本堂课授课对象为高一学生,他们在本单元已经有了关于自然灾害话题的认知和积累,具备一定的阅读能力和语言输出能力,但是对于庞贝古城所经历的火山爆发认知较少,本堂课希望学生能够在有效分析文本内容的基础上,感悟作者塑造灾难之惨烈的写作手法,并能将庞贝昔日的繁盛和如今灾难过后的萧条形成对比,深刻感悟自然面前人类的渺小,要敬畏自然。

I.Lead-in
School book sharing activity about natural disasters.
[设计意图:以本校最近的两则活动创设情景:高中部即将举行以自然灾害为主题的读书分享会,让学生产生对《庞贝末日》一书产生兴趣,同时为最后的输出环节作铺垫。]
II.Prediction
1.Guess from the title and pictures:
·What might happen in the ancient Roman city Pompeii?
It might have been completely destroyed due to the terrible natural disaster—— the volcanic eruption.
[设计意图:通过标题中所出现的关键词和教材相关图片来对课文内容进行预测,重点
抓住“last days”一词中的复数形式,说明文章会按照时间顺序来叙述庞贝的故事。]
2.Guess from the introduction:
·Why does it use “last days” here instead of “last day”?
It might imagine the days before , during and after the eruption. So the article is organized in time (time/place/logic) order.
[设计意图:结合上一轮预测以及介绍部分,能够对文章结构有个猜测并进行验证,提升学生对文本内容的预测能力,减轻阅读负担。]
III.Before the eruption Read para.1 and answer:
What things are presented in the city of Pompeii?
shops, palaces, forum, wine bars, theatre, trading ships, glassy water, Mount Vesuvius …
Pompeii was a typical Roman port city. Trading ships, golden pleasure boats and busy_ fishing boats showed a rich_/prosperous city.

IV.During the eruption Group work:
Read paras.2-4 and answer:

Use strong verbs instead of weak verbs to add effects.
Group 2 (para.3)

pushing.

V.After the eruption
Read para.5 and answer:

Sharing about the Last Days of Pompeii
The Last Days of Pompeii
Francs Bacon says, “reading makes a full man and history makes a wise man.” I believe all of us have already learned something from the history about Pompeii.
The Last Days of Pompeii is written in time order about Mount Vesuvius’s eruption . The author uses several writing skills such as strong verbs , to show how people feel fear and confused during this destructive volcanic eruption.
Having read this excerpt, it occurred to me that although human lives burn short and bright, we can still learn knowledge, have an awe of nature, stay calm and go together with the human unity to reduce the loss and make our civilization last.
Tip: What qualities will help survive during the “volcanic eruption”?

[设计意图:不仅是以总结的形式来分享读后感,而且要联系本单元所学深入思考,这样的灾难面前人类会否可能逃生?应该如何逃生。最后总结收束本单元:在自然灾害面前人类并非无能为力, 用四个重要品质“ learn knowledge--awe of nature--stay calm--together with the human community”让学生体会到虽然我们在自然面前微小脆弱,但是仍然可以通过努力来尽量减少灾难带来的损失,实现人类文明永续发展。]
