Every morning my father buys a newspaper on his way to work. Every evening my mother looks through magazines at home. And every night, I look at the posters with photos of David Beckham and Yao Ming on my bedroom wall before I go to sleep. Can we imagine life without paper or print?
Paper was first created about 2, 000 years ago, and has been made from silk, cotton, bamboo, and since the 19th century, from wood. People learned to write words on paper to make a book. But in those days, books could only be produced one at a time by hand. As a result, they were expensive and rare. And because there weren’t many books, few people learned to read.
Then printing was invented in China. When printing was developed greatly at the beginning of the 11th century, books could be produced more quickly and cheaply. As a result, more people learned to read. After that, knowledge and ideas spread quickly.
Today information can be received online, downloaded from the Internet rather than found in books, and information can be kept on CDROMs or machines such as MP3 players.
Computers are already used in classrooms, and newspapers and magazines can already be read online. So will books be replaced by computers one day? No, I don’t think the poster of Yao Ming on my bedroom wall will ever be replaced by a computer two meters high!
1. What does the writer do before he goes to sleep?
A. He reads books.
B. He reads newspapers.

3. Why were books expensive and rare before the invention of printing?
A. Because people could not read.
B. Because people could not write words on paper.
C. Because people could not find silk, cotton or bamboo.
D. Because people could only produce books one at a time by hand.
4. What happened after books became cheaper?
A. People didn’t want to buy books.
B. Printing was invented in China.
C. Knowledge and ideas spread quickly.
D. The Internet was introduced to people soon.
5. What is the writer’s opinion about books and computers?
A. People won’t need books any more.

Marion Sheppard’s world became darker in her 40s. As a lifelong dance lover, she found herself seeing less clearly day after day. Anxious about how others would think about her, she seldom left her apartment and wondered all the time, “What if people look at me and treat me differently?”
After months of struggle, Sheppard made a brave decision: she would not stop moving. Pushing herself out of the comfort zone, she attended a social event for people with eye problems, only to be shocked to know that everyone could not dance and they even hardly moved.
“Oh no! That is not the way I want to live!” She bought a walking stick (棍子), lovingly naming it Tyreek—the name she saved for a son if she could ever have one. Although her eyes became worse in her 50s, forcing her to leave her job at The New York Times, Sheppard still held her love for dance. A turning point came in 2008 at a summer camp for the blind, where the 61-year-old taught her first line dancing class.
Encouraged by this experience, she went to a Manhattan community center, hoping to teach. Refused at first for worries of safety, Sheppard didn’t give up and finally succeeded in volunteering. Her classes quickly became popular, and she was hired by a company in 2012.
Besides teaching dance steps to dozens of students, Sheppard gave something far deeper: a sense of dignity (尊严) and independence. Through her encouragement, she created a space where her students could truly be themselves, changing not just their movements, but their lives.
11. Why did Marion Sheppard hardly leave her apartment at first?
A. She lost her job and had no money.
B. She feared being treated differently.
C. There were no social events for her.
D. She wanted to teach dancing at home.
12. How did Sheppard feel about what she knew in the social event?

13. Which of the following is the correct order of the events?

A. They accepted it at once.

【13题详解】

Making small spaces look bigger (更大的) is not always easy, but it is possible to do it on your own. If your living room feels uncomfortably small, you can follow some tips to make it seem bigger.
Clean up the mess. Do not use more than three pieces of any decoration, for example, no more than three flower vases (花瓶). Cut down the number of things on the floor, such as house plants. Place as many of them as possible on the shelves (架子).
Choose a small dining table. Small tables are not heavy—you can move them with no difficulty, and put them away in other rooms when they are not needed, and this can help to make the living room seem bigger. There is also a new kind of dining table. It takes up very little space and looks nice.
Use a large wall mirror (镜子). If you have a wall to decorate, try finding a large wall mirror. You can add it to your living room, and it really makes the room look bigger!
Choose bright colours or light ones instead of dark colours when painting the walls. Don’t use dark coloured wallpaper, because it can make the room seem small. If you want to make a room look bigger, try painting it blue. It seems to push the walls back.

D. They thought it was too dangerous.
15. What does the story mainly want to tell us?
A. Marion Sheppard: A Brave Dancer.
