Listening and Speaking Ⅰ.阅读理解 A I will never forget the day when I won the bicycle race for the third time.It was special for me because I set a new record. But what made it more special was that I had to go through a tough time getting ready for the day. About three months before the final race something unfortunate happened when I fell off during practice and broke my left leg.All I could do was to wait for the injuries to heal. The worry was that the doctors suggested a bed rest for at least two months.A close friend of mine who had just recovered from his leg injury warned me that even if I were able to stand on my feet,I wouldn’t be able to ride a bicycle for a few more weeks. It was safe for me to give up because my leg was likely to be injured again during practice or the race. It was very difficult for me to just stop like this.My father felt bad too.He tried to keep my spirits up during my bed rest.My parents gave me nutritious(有营养的) food to keep me strong. They showed me lots of videos of cycling events to improve(提升) my riding skills. Thus, they were preparing me for the day when I returned to the track. The most important thing they taught me was that while there could be a chance of missing the race, never giving up in such a situation was an example of good sportsmanship. Two months passed quickly. The doctors were amazed at my complete recovery and supported my participation(参赛).Gradually,I was walking comfortably and exercising too.I practised as much as I could. Finally, the big day came.I was a little bit nervous but once I was on the race track, the fear had gone. The race began.I tried my best and finally I won the race. The whole stadium(体育场) was clapping for me.This became my most special day. 1.What was the friend’s attitude to the author’s participation in the race? A.He doubted it. B.He was against it. C.He was hopeful about it. D.He paid little attention to it. 2.What did the author’s parents do during the two months? A.They taught him how to take chances. B.They helped him prepare for next year’s race. C.They made it possible for him to enter the race. D.They let him realise the importance of healthy diets. 3.Which of the following can best describe the author? A.Honest. B.Creative. C.Warm-hearted. D.Strong-minded. 4.What can be the best title for the text? A.My most special day B.My unfortunate experience C.A long bed rest after an injury D.An exciting bicycle race in my school B As we age, even if we’re healthy, the heart just isn’t as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be.For most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s.And among people who don’t exercise, the changes can start even sooner. “Think of a rubber band.In the beginning,it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,” says Dr.Ben Levine,a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That’s what happens to the heart.Fortunately for those in midlife,Levine is finding that even if you haven’t been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart. Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy.Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a program of non-aerobic exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high-intensity aerobic (有氧的) exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health. “We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30- or 35-year-old hearts,” says Levine.“And the reason why they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump a lot more blood during exercise.” But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn’t change,he says. “The sweet spot in life to start exercising,if you haven’t already,is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,” Levine says.“We put healthy 70-year-olds through a year-long exercise training program, and nothing happened to them at all.” Dr.Nieca Goldberg,a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine’s findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference. 5.What does Levine want to explain by mentioning the rubber band? A.The right way of exercising. B.The aging process of the heart. C.The difficulty of keeping fit. D.The causes of a heart attack. 6.What does Levine’s research find? A.Middle-aged hearts get younger with aerobic exercise. B.High-intensity exercise is more suitable for the young. C.It is never too late for people to start taking exercise. D.The more exercise we do,the stronger our hearts get. 7.What does Dr.Nieca Goldberg suggest? A.Making use of the findings. B.Interviewing the study participants. C.Conducting further research. D.Clarifying the purpose of the study. Ⅱ.七选五 All parents know that young children are always energetic, eager to run, jump and play.Turning that natural energy into competitive sports can help keep kids active and healthy as they grow.Competitive sports such as soccer, track, basketball and swimming can also help kids learn important life lessons about teamwork and fair play. 1 .  Learning How to Compete Joining in sports teaches children and teenagers how to compete in the real world. As they grow older, they’ll face competition in school,in the workforce and other areas of life. But the competition doesn’t have to be negative or unhealthy. 2 .  Understanding the Value of Exercise 3 .In addition, many children who are active in sports are encouraged to eat healthier foods, such as fruit and vegetables.  Improving Self-respect Improved self-respect is another benefit of competitive youth sports. 4 .Even when he doesn’t win,he can learn a valuable lesson:that you can’t win every time.  Losing with his team can also increase self-esteem,as he learns to hold his head high and feel proud for trying his best. 5   Youth sports can help stop negative behavior, such as joining a gang, because competitive sports provide a way of expressing their energy, friendship and controlled attacking behavior.Teens who have positive influences and friends feel less of a need to join in risky behavior.
