In children’s eyes, mothers are perfect. In my mind, my mother is good at doing everything except (除了) cooking. I still remember what happened on my father’s birthday when I was young.
For the important day, I made a birthday card and prepared a beautiful song as my gift. And my mother made a special plan. She did some cleaning early in the morning. Then she began to cook a big meal. Three hours later, we were very hungry, but there were only two dishes on the table—a seafood salad and roast duck. We all wanted to have the roast duck as soon as possible because it was our favorite.
Unluckily, it looked terrible in color and tasted bad! I complained (抱怨) and only ate a little. However, my father didn’t complain at all. Instead (反而), he ate one more piece of the duck and smiled at my mother, “Good taste. I love it! Thank you, dear! It’s the best roast duck I have ever had!” My mother smiled happily and said, “Happy birthday, my dear!”
I couldn’t understand what my father said and did at that time. I thought he must have a taste problem. Ten years has passed and my father has become a 50-year-old man. He still loves the food my mother cooks, though she hasn’t become a good cook yet. As time went by, I came to know that no one is perfect, including my mother. Nothing is perfect, including my family. But love can make it different. If there is love, home will become the sweetest place in the world.

My daddy is my hero. He is in the army and keeps people in the world safe. Sometimes he needs to leave us for a long while and help people far away.
After Daddy left home, the house seemed really quiet and empty. Mommy and I both started to cry. I am proud of my daddy. I am glad he helps people. But I didn’t want him to go away.
“I’m going to miss Daddy a lot,” I said.
Mommy walked over to the closet, and pulled out a large basket.
“Remember Hannah,” she said, “every time we want to share something with Daddy, we will write it down, draw a picture, or even make something. Then we will put it in this basket, and at the end of the week we’ll send everything in a box to Daddy. That way, he will know what we’re doing here while he’s away.”
Over the next few days, I filled the basket with lots of things: a picture of me, a letter, a drawing I made. All of these things were important for me to share. But I still felt like there was something missing from the basket.
At bedtime, Mommy gave me a big hug good night. That’s when I knew what was missing.
“I wish I could send Daddy a good night hug,” I said.
The next morning when I woke up, I saw a big piece of paper on the kitchen floor. I saw markers and crayons. “I know how you can send a hug to Daddy,” Mommy said.
I lay down, and Mommy traced around me with a marker. I filled in all the white space to make it look like me. I folded it neatly and placed it in the box with the other items to send to Daddy.

Plants are not just beautiful decorations in our world, they are the foundation of life on Earth. Without plants, life as we know it would not exist. They are incredibly important for our survival and the health of our planet.
First of all, plants are our primary source of food. All the food we eat, whether it's fruits, vegetables, grains, or even the meat from animals, can be traced back to plants. Animals eat plants to grow, and then we eat the animals. So, plants are the base of the food chain. Secondly, plants produce the oxygen we breathe. Through the process of photosynthesis, they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the air, which is essential for all living things to survive.
There are millions of different kinds of plants in the world, each with its own unique characteristics. Some plants are very small and simple, like moss and grass that grow close to the ground. Others are incredibly large and ancient, like the redwood trees in California. Redwood trees are the tallest trees on Earth, capable of growing up to 115 meters tall, which is like a 35-story building! They can also live for more than 2,000 years.
Plants are also crucial for the environment. Their roots help to hold the soil in place, preventing erosion. They absorb rainwater, which helps to reduce flooding. They provide shelter and food for countless species of animals, birds, and insects, creating complex ecosystems. Many animals, like pandas, depend entirely on specific plants (like bamboo) for their survival.
Unfortunately, many plant species are now endangered due to human activities like deforestation, pollution, and climate change. We must take action to protect plants and their habitats. We should not cut down too many trees, and we should plant more trees to replace the ones we have lost. By protecting plants, we are protecting the future of our planet and all the life that depends on it.
1.What do plants give us?
A.Food. B.Oxygen. C.Many other things. D.All of the above.
2.What are the tallest trees in the world?
A.Redwood trees. B.Bamboo. C.Ginkgo trees. D.Pine trees.
3.How tall can redwood trees grow?
A.Up to 100 meters. B.Up to 115 meters. C.Up to 120 meters. D.Up to 125 meters.
4.Why are plants important for the environment?
A.They help to keep the air clean. B.They provide homes for many animals.
C.Both A and B. D.Neither A nor B.
5.What should we do to protect plants?
A.We should cut down more trees.
B.We should not protect plants.
C.We should protect plants and not cut down too many trees.
D.We should not plant more trees.
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.B 4.C 5.C

Most trees grow a lot in late spring and early summer. During this time, trees produce something called chlorophyll. It is like a magic “food-maker” that helps plants turn water, carbon dioxide and sunlight into carbohydrates. This way of making food is called photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is what makes leaves green. Tree leaves actually have other colors in them all the time, but the green chlorophyll is so strong that it hides the other colors.
In late spring and early summer, trees also grow new wood around their trunk (树干), branches, and roots. These layers (层) of wood are called growth rings. Each year, a new ring grows. A good, rainy year makes wide, light-colored rings while a tough year makes narrow, dark-colored ones.
In autumn, the tree starts to slow down its growth. The dark part of the growth ring forms. Many trees also drop their fruit at this time. The fruit has seeds (种子) inside, and each seed has an embryo (胚胎). Germination takes place when the seed coating is wetted and embryo cells (细胞) grow and break out.
But the most amazing thing that happens in autumn is the change in leaf colour. The tree stops making so much chlorophyll. When the chlorophyll disappears, the green color fades away (逐渐消失). Then, you can see the other colours that were hidden in the leaves all along! These other colours are called carotenes (yellow and orange) and anthocyanins (red, pink, and purple). The most important environmental factors controlling autumn leaf colouration are temperature, light, and water. Cold, sunny days with not too much water help the tree make more anthocyanins.
1.Which of the pictures shows “germination”?
A. B. C. D.
2.What do we know about growth rings?
A.They grow only on trunks. B.They mainly grow in late autumn.
C.Very dry years bring narrow rings. D.The new layer grows from the center.
3.What type of sentence structure is the underlined sentence?
A.S+V B.S+V+O
C.S+V+O+C D.S+V+O+O
4.What may the writer talk about next?
A.How trees change in winter.
B.Special trees around the world.
C.A story of planting trees in a year.
D.The importance of protecting trees.
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.C 4.A

①Bamboo is one of the most useful plants in the world. It grows in many parts of Asia, Africa and South America.
②Some kinds of bamboo are really special. For example, Moso bamboo—it can grow very fast. In just one day, it can grow up to one meter. That means it can get really tall in a short time. It’s like magic of nature (大自然的魔力). Bamboo has a long and straight stalk (茎). It can be several meters long.
③In everyday life, bamboo is widely used for making “house things”. People make chairs, tables, and beds out of bamboo because it is both strong and light. Many traditional houses in some Asian countries also use bamboo to build houses. It can make the houses cool in summer and warm in winter.
④Also, bamboo is an important part of the food for some animals. Pandas, for example, mainly eat bamboo. Without bamboo, pandas would face serious food problems.
⑤What’s more, bamboo affects (影响) the environment a lot. It helps to make the air clean and stop the soil (土壤) from being washed away.
⑥However, bamboo is facing some dangers now. People cut down too much bamboo for different uses without thinking about its growth. Also, some areas where bamboo grows are being polluted.

The weather is getting cold. We have a warm home to keep us comfortable. But what about stray (流浪的) animals? They are poor and alone. All they can do is to walk along the streets and hope to find food here and there.
There are around 500 million stray dogs in the world and a similar number of stray cats. Why are there so many stray animals? Abandonment (遗弃) may be the main reason. The owners who only care about their own needs easily give up their pets, especially when the animal is ill or born with some problems. They should answer for that.
Today, the whole world is calling for better care of stray animals. And many countries have taken good ways. In the UK and the US, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (防止虐待动物协会) has a 24-hour hotline. Anyone can call if he or she finds someone is hurting an animal. In Germany, there are many laws for animal protection. The government encourages people to adopt (领养) pets from animal shelters (收容所) and give them new homes.
You can also do something to help. Once you find a stray animal, don’t try to catch it by yourself. It’s dangerous. You can ask adults (成年人) around you for help. If it is safe enough to catch a stray animal, you’d better send it to an animal shelter. Most people there volunteer to take care of stray animals.
There is one thing you need to keep in mind. When you decide to have a pet, treat it carefully and gently. Never give it up, or it will become a poor stray animal.

D.When you find a stray animal, catch it and send it to the animal shelter at once.
3.The writer’s main purpose of writing the passage is to ________.
A.solve the problem of stray animals

Scientists put a mother in one place. They put her two-year-old child in another place. There was a telephone line between them. Soon, the mother and child were talking to each other. The mother and child were dolphins.
In this experiment (实验), one of the two dolphins would make a sound. Then the other dolphin would make the same sound. Also, the scientists believed that the two animals knew who they were talking to.
Scientists have known for a long time that animals can “talk” with each other. But dolphins have some special ways of talking. They are very smart. When they are in a group, they “talk” to each other. They do this through using different sounds. Dolphins not only use sounds to talk, but also use body language. They “tell” something to another dolphin by moving their body in an interesting way. They also do it by opening and closing their mouths quickly.
Scientists have listened to the dolphins’ sounds, and they have watched the dolphins’ behaviour. It’s a pity that they don’t know what the dolphins are saying.
However, scientists have a strong hope of understanding dolphins’ language…

Slow travel is a different way of seeing the world. It is not just about visiting famous places. It is about living a little like the local people and really feeling their culture. The longer you stay, the more you can understand.
I tried slow travel in India in 2012. I lived with a local family. Every day, I heard a loud, regular chant (吟唱). On the first day, I asked about it and people told me that it was a call to prayer (祷告). I believed that, but I was wrong. On the fourth day, I found out it was actually the doorbell! If I had had a fast trip and left earlier, I would have kept the wrong idea in my mind.
Slow travel also lets you have unexpected experiences. Once, during a three-week stay in Italy, I went to a cinema. There, I met some friendly people. After the movie, they invited me to a local restaurant. It was a special place. There was no menu. The waiter just talked with us and then decided what we would eat. It was a real local experience that most tourists never get.
If you want to try slow travel, here are some tips:
☞ ▲ to avoid crowds. Some tourist spots might be closed, but you can see more real local life.
☞ Stay where the locals live. This helps you learn about authentic life quickly.

C.By comparing travel costs between fast and slow travel.
D.By listing famous tourist attractions in different countries.
5.What is the writer’s opinion on “slow travel”?

South China tigers are one of the most endangered animals in China. They mainly live in the forests of southern China. But now, there are only about 100 South China tigers left in the world, most of which live in zoos or wildlife centers.
Why are they in danger? First, people cut down many trees, so their living places are getting smaller. Second, some people hunt them illegally for their bones and fur. Also, the number of their prey (猎物) is decreasing because of pollution and habitat loss.
To save South China tigers, people have built more nature reserves for them. Laws have been made to stop illegal hunting. Scientists are also trying to help them reproduce (繁殖) more babies. We can also help by not buying products made from tiger parts and telling more people about their situation.
