High School Study Abroad Scholarships
CIEE manages the largest study abroad scholarship fund for high school students in the U.S. We want to make study abroad opportunities more accessible to more students and amplify (增强) the positive impact of educational exchange on our world. Our selective scholarships and awards are a great honor that can help you stand out on your college applications, resumes for career opportunities, and other experiences to come.
What Types Of High School Scholarships Can You Apply To?
There are two types of CIEE high school study abroad scholarships available:
● Global Navigator Scholarship (GNS) covers between $500 to 100% of your tuition (学费) costs(this is the price listed at the top of every high school summer abroad program page). You have to submit your parent(s)’s financial information to apply for this scholarship.
● Academic Merit Award covers $500 from your tuition costs. You don’t need to submit your parent(s)’s financial information to apply for this award.
Additional Costs
● Scholarship money cannot be applied to your airfare to and from the country, your passport or visa fees (if required), or your personal spending money. Check out airfare prices before applying to a specific program. This will help you and your legal guardian make the best choices based on your budget. For example, a flight to Mexico or the Dominican Republic can be half the price of flying to Spain!
● You will be responsible for paying the cost of program tuition. It is not covered by your Global Navigator Scholarship or Academic Merit Award.
● For fundraising advice, see our fundraising section.

Watching the motorbike roll out of the hire shop in Thakhek, Laos, I wondered if I was making a terrible mistake. It was March 2017, and I had agreed to go on a road trip with Travis, an American I’d met just weeks earlier in an international programme in Thailand. I tended to be circumspect around people I didn’t know but Travis’s constant efforts to get to know me had worked, and we connected over a shared sense of humour. His suggestion to explore Laos together felt like the natural progression of our friendship.
Travis wanted to visit a hot climbing spot while I wanted to see the Laos that wasn’t on the typical tourist trail — and it seemed like the only way we could do both was to travel by motorbike, a means of transport I actively avoided for many years.
When I was a little boy, my dad would go to work on his motorbike every day and it seemed to me like a perfectly natural way to travel. That all changed in 2004. While backpacking in Sihanoukville, a motorbike crash landed me in a medical clinic with a serious leg injury. Though I promised to be safer in the future, back in London I found myself always trying to avoid motorbikes. The scars on my leg became a permanent reminder of the accident and I grew cautious about doing anything involving physical risk.
By 2017, it had been more than a decade since I had ridden on a motorbike. Travis assured me that he had a driver’s licence and would drive safely. I looked down at the scars on my leg, took a deep breath and swung my leg over the seat.
I needn’t have worried. The journey unfolded smoothly, carrying us to splendid temples, expansive lakes, hidden caves, and little cafes. We rode through winding mountain roads to reach scenic villages that we would never have otherwise encountered. It was a trip that healed my “scars” and supplied me with the confidence to connect more readily with strangers and to adventure more.
4. What does the underlined word “circumspect” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Friendly. B. Impatient. C. Cautious. D. Enthusiastic.
5. What led the author to agree to go on a trip with Travis?
A. Travis’s spirit of adventure. B. Their mutual interest in Laos.
C. Their shared purpose of traveling. D. Travis’s efforts to bond with him.
6. Why did the author hesitate to travel by motorbike at first?
A. He didn’t trust Travis’s driving skills. B. He was not familiar with the roads in Laos.
C. He preferred a faster means of transportation. D. He had an accident on a motorbike in the past.
7. Which of the following best describes the author’s journey in Laos?
A. Healing. B. Uneventful. C. Adventurous. D. Romantic.

Once an ignored industrial waterfront lined with abandoned storehouses and polluted soil, the newly opened Harmony Park is greatly transforming the city’s landscape and the lives of its residents. More than just a green space, this 50-hectare (公顷) urban ecological park represents a bold step towards sustainable (可持续的) city living, demonstrating how nature can be perfectly and productively woven back into the concrete jungle of a metropolis (大都市).
Designed with advanced ecological engineering principles, the park functions as a fully integrated ecosystem. Over 20,000 native trees and bushes, including drought-resistant oaks, lindens, and expansive pollinator-friendly wildflower meadows, form a multi-layered habitat for diverse local species. Bird monitoring has already documented the return of kingfishers, while sensor-equipped “hedgehog highways” under pathways safeguard small animal movement. The park’s centerpiece is a 3-hectare constructed wetland, fed entirely by an advanced rainwater harvesting system that collects water from the park’s pathways and seven green roofs on site structures. This natural filtration (过滤) system processes an estimated 15,000 cubic meters of water annually, removing over 80% of pollutants before clean water slowly recharges the nearby river, where native fish populations are rebounding (回升).
For citizens, the park delivers measurable, multi-layered benefits. Its 5 kilometers of accessible trails, outdoor classrooms with real-time environmental data displays, and over thirty community garden plots promote health, education, and social unity. Crucially, it serves as a vital “cooling island.” A municipal sensor network shows the park’s core temperature can be up to 5-7 degrees Celsius lower than the surrounding asphalt-heavy districts on a summer afternoon, with the cooling effect perceptible up to 500 meters downwind. The trees act as a natural air filter, estimated to trap 2-3 tons of PM annually, while vegetation belts reduce traffic noise by a significant 10 decibels, creating a zone of tranquility.
Harmony Park plays, therefore, far more than its recreational (娱乐的) role; it is critical municipal green infrastructure (基础设施). It is an ideal example of urban planning, where environmental repair, climate recovery, and community health are fundamentally interconnected. As global cities grow more crowded and face rising climate pressures, such carefully and systematically designed, multi-functional ecological spaces are not a luxury, but an essential investment (投资) in a sustainable and truly livable urban future.
8. What can we learn about the park from paragraph 2?
A. Its integrated ecosystem. B. Its recreational function.
C. Its philosophical principles. D. Its abstract design concept.
9. How does the park benefit citizens?
A. It monitors their leisure. B. It removes social conflicts.
C. It ensures their well-being. D. It provides coolness and quiet.
10. Which word best describes the planning of the park?
A. Money-consuming. B. Conventional. C. Forward-looking. D. Contradictory.
11. What is the passage generally about?
A. Why vast city parks will gain popularity in modern cities.
B. How Harmony Park Breathes New Life into Metropolis.
C. What distinguishes Harmony Park from others of its kind.
D. Where the value of investment in ecological spaces lies.

In January 2025, an announcement from a little-known Chinese AI startup sent shock waves through the global tech industry. DeepSeek, founded by former finance investor Liang Wenfeng released its R1 reasoning model, a system that matched the performance of leading closed-source AI tools (such as OpenAI’s GPT-4) but at a small portion of the cost. For Nature’s 2025 “Nature’s 10” list, we recognize Liang as a tech disruptor whose work has written the rules of the global AI race.
Liang, 40, began his career in quantitative finance, where he developed algorithms for stock market prediction. He turned to AI in 2023, founding DeepSeek to “popularize access to advanced reasoning systems”, after growing frustrated by the high cost of cutting-edge AI tools. His team, a group of 35 researchers, built R1 with a total development budget of $6 million — less than 10% of the cost of competitors like Meta’s Llama 3.
The model’s performance was a stunning success. In independent tests, R1 scored 89.2 on the MMLU reasoning standard (matching GPT-4’s 89.7), and outperformed it on coding tasks. What made the breakthrough ground-breaking, however, was Liang’s decision to open-source R1’s weights — a first for a system of this level. Within weeks, the model was downloaded 1.2 million times, with researchers adapting it to fields from drug discovery to climate modeling.
“DeepSeek’s open model has been a boon for small teams and academics who could never afford to build such tools themselves,” says Benjamin Lee, a former researcher at Hugging Face. The move also forced Western rivals to shift strategy: within three months, Google and Anthropic released their own partially open models, accelerating global AI collaboration.
For Liang, the goal remains simple: “AI should be a tool for everyone, not just the wealthy few.” As Nature’s 2025 “Nature’s 10” profile concludes: “Liang’s work has not just built a better AI model, it has proven that flexibility, collaboration, and a commitment to openness can outpace even the deepest pockets.”
12. What can we infer from the first paragraph about DeepSeek’s R1 model?
A. It has surpassed GPT-4 as the leading AI tool globally.
B. It has altered the competitive pattern of the global AI industry.
C. It was developed with a much higher cost than closed-source AI tools.
D. It was the AI model to be included in Nature’s 2025 “Nature’s 10” list.
13. Why did Liang Wenfeng switch from quantitative finance to AI research?
A. He failed to achieve success in the financial field.
B. He wanted to make advanced AI accessible to more people.
C. He was invited by a group of AI researchers to found DeepSeek.
D. He found stock market prediction algorithms less challenging.
14. The underlined word “disruptor” in Paragraph 1 most probably means ______.
A. someone who preserves traditional rules
B. someone who interrupts and changes an industry
C. someone who invests heavily in a new business field
D. someone who supports new technological development
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Liang Wenfeng’s experience in quantitative finance helps his AI research.
B. DeepSeek’s R1 model has been widely applied in various scientific fields.
C. Liang Wenfeng’s open-source AI model reshapes the global AI landscape.
D. The development of AI has led to fierce competition among global tech companies.

Many people believe that fresh produce is healthier than frozen produce. ___16___ Research shows it can be just as healthy as fresh produce, sometimes even better. Comparing fresh and frozen produce, researcher found that the vitamin content in frozen produce is often just as high as, or sometimes even higher than that in fresh produce.
Frozen fruit and vegetables are usually picked when they are fully grown and ready to be eaten. ___17___ This step helps lock in their nutrients. Fresh produce, on the other hand, is often picked before it’s full-grown so it can survive the journey to stores.
Despite the long travel time, fresh fruit and vegetables from supermarkets still contain plenty of nutrients. But when compared to fresh produce from local farmers’ markets, they often lose benefits. Since local produce is usually picked right before reaching the market, it’s often fresher and packed with more nutrients than store-bought fresh produce. ___18___
So the common view that fresh and “natural” foods are always healthier than frozen ones is not true. Experts say that freezing is actually a form of processing. Its harmful effects are very small. ___19___ Also, frozen produce is often less expensive and lasts longer in the freezer than fresh produce does in the fridge, which helps cut down on food waste.
___20___ Frozen produce is excellent for saving money and enjoying seasonal foods year-round. Fresh foods, especially locally grown ones, taste and feel better for many people. Since both fresh and frozen produce have their benefits, it’s good to include both in your diet.
A. In fact, there is no single best choice.
B. It can lead to nutrient loss on the way.
C. But frozen produce often gets unfairly judged.
D. This means frozen produce is still a healthy choice.
E. And they are frozen quickly within hours after being picked.
F. In the end, the key is to eat more fruit and vegetables in your diet.
G. The shorter travel time from farm to market helps preserve its food value.

Dear fellow students,
With the rapid development of tourism and economy, our precious cultural heritage sites are facing increasing threats. To raise awareness and take action, we are launching the campaign “Please Protect the Heritage Sites!”.
As members of the younger generation, we have a responsibility to protect these invaluable treasures that carry centuries of history and culture. We should always follow site regulations, refrain from touching artifacts or writing on walls, and dispose of waste properly. When we’re visiting these sites, choosing environmentally friendly transportation can significantly reduce our impact. Moreover, we should actively share the importance of preservation with those around us.
Let’s unite in this meaningful cause! Together, we can ensure these magnificent sites continue to inspire future generations.

第二节(满分20分)
【57题答案】
【答案】Realizing the severe situation, Hill ran out for help. She dashed to Mrs. Smith’s house, her small heart racing. “Mrs. Smith, come quick! Mommy’s not moving!” she cried, her voice trembling with fear. Mrs. Smith, ever the composed neighbor, followed Hill without delay, immediately recognizing the urgency of the situation. Upon entering Jennifer’s home, Mrs. Smith found her on the floor, seizing. “Call 911, Hill, and stay on the line,” she instructed, her voice steady as she began first aid. Hill, though scared, managed to relay the emergency to the operator, her mother’s lifeline.
Jennifer finally came to herself in the hospital. The sterile environment formed a stark contrast to the warmth of her kitchen. As she regained consciousness, she saw Hill’s tearful face and Mrs. Smith’s comforting presence. The relief was palpable; she knew her quick-thinking daughter and reliable neighbor had saved her life, reinforcing the bond of their little family and the community that supported them.
