As a foreigner who is really interested in Chinese culture, I like learning Chinese. It is thought that a person needs to know at least 3,000 Chinese characters (汉字) to understand most Chinese newspapers. The problem for most foreigners, however, is that knowing 3,000 characters sounds like an impossible task, because many of the Chinese characters look the same. That’s why some people give up halfway. It’s the most arduous part for me, too. But I managed to learn how to write each character by watching videos online. Whenever I saw a character I didn’t know in the street or on a menu, I would just write it down on my phone and then look it up. Slowly, I’ve learned the common characters in daily life. It’s also important to listen to Chinese as much as possible. I downloaded (下载) a lot of listening materials onto my phone and listened to them on the way to school and work. I also watched a lot of Chinese TV shows and films, where the words are not so difficult, and there are always subtitles (字幕). It’s really helpful for my listening. As for speaking, I practice talking about different topics in Chinese when I am walking around, talking to myself or in my head, thinking through different conversations and situations. For example, whenever I was going to a shop, I would think about how to say that in Chinese. It helps me to think in a Chinese way, which is really important. Learning a language is never easy. As for me, I just use every tool on hand and take my learning step by step, and I’m still learning new things to this day! ( ) 31. Why does the author learn Chinese? A. Because he needs to work in China. B. Because he wants to move to China. C. Because he wants to have Chinese friends. D. Because he hopes to know more about China. ( ) 32. What does the underlined word “arduous” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Difficult. B Important. C. Impossible. D. Relaxing. ( ) 33. What is the main way of practicing speaking for the author? A. Traveling around China. B. Thinking like a Chinese. C. Watching Chinese movies. D. Reading Chinese newspapers. ( ) 34. What does the author suggest (暗示) at the end of the passage? A. It is easy to talk with Chinese people. B. It is a wise decision to learn a language. C. It takes time and effort to learn a language. D. Chinese is not as difficult as you may think. ( ) 35. Which of the following is the right structure (结构) of the passage? (Para. 1=①; Para. 2=②…) A. B. C. D. (D) Sometimes animals are so badly injured that common medicine cannot help them. However, animal lovers can still come to save them. In Brazil, a group of them use their knowledge of medicine and computer technology to create man-made body parts for those injured animals. The technology is called three-dimensional (3D) printing, which can create all kinds of objects from a cup to a toy truck. It takes a lot of plastic. Now, a Canadian company has solved this problem. It has invented the ProtoCycler, which can turn waste plastic, such as bottles, into plastic that can be used in a 3D printer. Last year, the Brazil team used 3D printing to help a poor tortoise (陆龟), Freddy. A forest fire had burned 85% of her shell, the hardest part of her back. In other words, her shell was nearly gone. The whole team worked together to give her another chance at life. First, they took photos of Freddy and of a healthy tortoise with a complete shell. Then, they used a computer program to design a new shell that would fit her exactly. A 3D printer created the new plastic shell. After that, the finished shell was attached to (贴附于) Freddy’s body. The new shell fit well, but the white plastic did not have a natural look. Later, an artist painted the shell so that it looked like a real one. The results were very fantastic. Freddy now lives with the people who helped save her life. ( ) 36. What do we know about the ProtoCycler? A It is a plastic toy. B. It takes a lot of plastic. C. It is a new 3D printer. D. It makes waste plastic useful. ( ) 37. What brought the Brazil team together? A. Purpose of saving. B. Need for research. C. Interest in science. D. Thought on testing. ( ) 38. It seems a national problem troubling the local government much. Even the highest land of the world is suffering from it, too. The government of Tibet started an activity on Saturday to clean up rubbish left by climbers on the north side of the world’s highest one, Mount Qomolangma. The activity will last for nine days. It is going to be carried out by some organizations. More than 90 people will join in the clean-up. Much of the rubbish lying around on the slopes (坡) of the mountain, commonly known in the West as Mount Everest, is made up of bottles, paper, tents, oxygen cans and climbing ropes. More than 4,000 climbers have succeeded in climbing Mount Qomolangma since New Zealand’s Edmund Hillary became the first person to do it in 1953. Since April, over 210 climbers have tried to climb on the mountain from the north side. As the number of visitors grows, the government is working to protect the mountain and the wild land of this area. The Tibet government says that it has stopped visitors from passing through the Changtang National Nature Reserve to arrive at other areas, which is China’s biggest and highest reserve. Even two other nature reserves, one in Xinjiang and another in Qinghai, hoping to get across to this place, are refused clearly. All of these are just as a way to protect the environment.
