Science is creating amazing new things by mixing different fields in surprising ways.
Imagine a cake that not only tastes good but also moves like a robot! Scientists and chefs in Switzerland have teamed up to create RoboCake. It is on show at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. On top of the cake are two tiny red bears that can move their heads and arms. They are soft and sweet and taste like pomegranates (石榴). RoboCake also has the world’s first batteries (电池) that can be eaten. Made from chocolate and vitamins (维生素), the batteries can light up the cake’s candles. This idea could help reduce electronic waste by making tech eco-friendly.
Scientists in the US have created a new wearable device (可穿戴设备). It can tell how someone feels, even if they keep a “poker face”. Like a small, thin band-aid (创可贴), it sticks to the skin to “feel” things like skin temperature and sweat. AI then looks at this data to figure out emotions (情绪). In tests, the device was right 89 percent of the time. That is better than just reading faces. This could help with mental health support in the future.
56. What is special about the RoboCake according to the text?
A. It is the world’s largest cake. B. It looks like a small bear.
C. It was created by scientists in the US. D. It has batteries made from food.
57. How does the new device from the US work?
A. It reads people’s faces directly.
B. It asks people to talk about their feelings.
C. It uses a computer to understand information from the skin.
D. It lights up when someone feels happy.
58. Where does the text probably come from?
A. A cookbook teaching how to bake cakes. B. A science magazine about new inventions.
C. A history book about World Expo events. D. An advertisement for wearable devices.
【答案】56. D 57. C 58. B
第一段指出:“RoboCake also has the world’s first batteries that can be eaten. Made from chocolate and vitamins...”,直接说明RoboCake的特别之处在于它拥有由食物制成的可食用电池。
【57题详解】
第二段提到:“Like a small, thin band-aid, it sticks to the skin to ‘feel’ things like skin temperature and sweat. AI then looks at this data to figure out emotions.”,因此该设备的工作原理是通过贴在皮肤上获取数据,再由人工智能分析这些信息来判断情绪,即利用计算机解读来自皮肤的信息。
【58题详解】
文章首段点明主题“Science is creating amazing new things by mixing different fields in surprising ways.”,后文分别介绍了两项全新的科技发明,因此本文最可能来自一本关于新发明的科学杂志。

As a freshman in high school, all I wanted was to fit in at the new school. But its walls seemed to tower over me as soon as I walked into the building. It also scared me with its heavy work. To escape the stress of classes and homework, I decided to join the marching band.
Before making the team, I had to learn flag routines (旗舞动作) and show my skills. After a week of practice in my yard, I was ready for tryouts, and to hopefully land a spot (位置) in the marching band. I performed a 3-minute flag routine from memory and waited for a whole week before the results were announced. When I saw my name on the band room wall, I was excited to be part of The Big Red Machine at Crestview High School.
Being in the marching band meant that I had to spend my summer, school nights and weekends practicing for the show. How often do you drink milk tea? In China, milk tea is very popular. Now, some Chinese milk tea brands (品牌) are also becoming successful in other countries. One popular brand, Chagee, recently started selling its shares in the US. On its first day, people thought the company was worth about 55 billion yuan. This is a very big success.
How did Chagee do it? The company has a good plan. It doesn’t make too many different drinks. It only focuses on a few best-selling ones. Also, it uses special machines. These machines can make a drink very quickly, in just eight seconds.
This smart plan makes their work very efficient. Their products sell out fast, and the cost of moving products around is very low. This strong system is very important for doing business in other countries. An expert said that while others can copy drink styles or prices, it’s hard to copy this efficient system.
Other Chinese brands are also growing around the world. Mixue has many stores in other countries. ChaPanda has opened stores in South Korea, Thailand, and Spain.
These brands try to fit into new places. They change their flavors (口味) to match local tastes. For example, in Southeast Asia, Chagee uses popular local tea flavors. But they also keep their Chinese style, using things like Peking Opera masks in their designs. This mix of new and old helps them win fans everywhere.
62. What happened to Chagee when it started selling its shares in the US?
A. It opened 4,800 new stores worldwide. B. It changed its menu for different countries.
C. It became worth about 55 billion yuan. D. It started using special fast machines.
63. What does the word “efficient” most probably mean in the passage?
A. Making things quickly and well. B. Selling products at low prices.

64. What can we infer about Chinese milk tea brands from the last two paragraphs?
A. They only sell tea in Asian countries.
B. They think local tastes are not important.

In today’s job market, “soft skills” are becoming as important as technical knowledge.
In Greater Manchester, UK, a new program will teach “soft skills” to Generation Z — young people born between the late 1990s and early 2010s.
The program will teach useful life skills such as managing time well, recognizing false news online, staying safe on the internet, and avoiding tricks. By September, around 10, 000 students are expected to join the course. Most learning will be online, but final tests will be taken in person.
Many British businesses are worried that young people may find it hard to talk confidently on the phone or during a job interview. This is because Gen Z grew up with the Internet. They are more comfortable with quick online messages than real-life conversations.
A university teacher also pointed out that recent world events have made it harder for some young people to learn key social skills. Since Gen Z will make up more than a quarter of the UK’s workforce by 2025, learning these skills is very important. Also, as artificial intelligence (AI) does more technical work, humans can focus on improving soft skills — something AI cannot do well.
66. What will the new program in Greater Manchester teach?
A. How to use artificial intelligence. B. Useful life skills like time management.
C. Ways to improve technical knowledge. D. How to grow up with the Internet.
67. What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A. British businesses prefer online messages.
B. Gen Z is very confident in job interviews.
C. The internet helps young people talk better.
D. Why Gen Z finds real-life communication difficult.
68. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To explain why soft skills are becoming more important.

C. To show that technical skills are no longer useful.
D. To describe the history of Generation Z.

On a sunny Saturday in late February, 13-year-old Rohan Mukhopadhyay opened 10 boxes of children’s books. He was at the Beehive in Los Angeles, California, US, with his family. They planned to give those books away to children, as part of a program Mukhopadhyay started, called Reading Among Ruins.
Just weeks earlier, wildfires had torn through (撕裂) Los Angeles. More than 16, 000 buildings were hit, including schools and houses. Mukhopadhyay and his family lost their home in the fire, and his favorite books were also gone.
“I was heartbroken,” he told Times for Kids. “It made me wonder how other people and other kids felt about losing their books.” That question kick-started his efforts. He began to look for books for kids who were affected by the fires. Some of the books were donated (捐赠) by writers, and some others came from publishers (出版社).
In its first month, Reading Among Ruins gave away more than 1,000 books to kids. Asher Finkelthal, 13, was one of them. Using an online form, “I asked for a few books by Stuart Gibbs,” he told Times for Kids. Gibbs is one of his favorite writers. Then, he got Gibbs’s Fun Jungle and Spy School series from Mukhopadhyay. “It’s nice to know that other people care about books and want to help people rebuild their collections.”
Rohan said that the kids were “really excited” as they chose their books. As long as there’s a need, he plans to keep helping.

One sunny morning, Ms. Green placed paper, scissors, and glue on a table. “Your task,” she told her class, “is to build a paper bridge strong enough to hold this small toy car.”
Some students, like Tom, were sure they could do it alone. Others thought it was a job for everyone. They gathered around the table, all talking at once. Everyone had a different idea. Papers were pulled, cuts were made too quickly, and the first bridge fell down before it was even finished.
The laughing and talking stopped as they began to feel upset. They tried again, but the result was the same. Then, Sarah, who was usually quiet, spoke up. “Maybe... we need a plan first?” She carefully drew a design on the board. Seeing the clear drawing, the class grew quiet.
This time, they worked differently. Jack did all the cutting. Amy carefully folded the pieces. Tom held the main parts while others glued them together. There were a few shakes, but no one argued. They helped each other change their holds.
Slowly, a strong bridge took shape. When the toy car rolled safely from one end to the other, a cheer went up. Ms. Green smiled but said nothing. The students looked at their creation, and then at each other. They didn’t need to be told why it worked this time. The proud smiles on their faces said it all.

Even though it was fun to hang out with friends during the summer at band camp, I had to march in the heat and deal with many rehearsals (彩排). I practiced in all kinds of weather with heavy instruments across the field. From early morning practices to late-night soccer games, I put in long hours.
During competition season, I sometimes didn’t get back to school until early in the morning. I also can’t tell you how many times I slept on the bus floor. However, seeing our show come to life was always worth it.
59. Why did the writer decide to join the marching band?
A. To make the school walls less scary. B. To get away from schoolwork stress.
C. To become a famous flag routine performer. D. To stay in the band room after school.
60. What did the writer have to do before joining the band?

B. To encourage people to work in Greater Manchester.
