Wind, water, animals and even fire help spread plant seeds. Some plants, such as dandelions, have seeds that are small and light. One dandelion can produce up to a hundred seeds. As dandelion seeds are dispersed by the wind, it is likely that some seeds will land in areas in which new plants can grow. A milkweed pod is filled with hundreds of seeds that can waft(飘荡) in the breeze. Both milkweed and dandelion seeds have been known to travel hundreds of miles on a wind current. Some plants, such as peas and violets, use an explosion(爆破) to send their seeds away. As a pea pod dries, it will eventually burst and send seeds flying in every direction. Violets use explosive dispersal as well. When the seeds are ready, the pod will open with a pop, ejecting seeds with surprising force. Many plants that live near water, such as the coconut tree, have seeds that can float and be carried great distances by the water. If dispersed into an ocean, a coconut can even be transported to another continent. Animals help plants disperse seeds in several ways. Some plants, like the burdock, have barbs that can get caught in the fur of animals passing by. An animal may carry the seed to a new location before the seed gets shaken off its fur. Other plants produce seeds inside fruits, such as apples and berries, that get eaten by animals. The seeds pass through the animal’s body and are dropped in other locations. The animal gets a tasty treat, and the plant grows in new places as the seeds are dispersed. Squirrels bury seeds for later. They return to find many, but not all, of the seeds they have stored. It could be said that a squirrel is nature’s gardener, as these seeds often grow into new plants. This is how many oak trees have been planted, as the acorn is one of a squirrel’s favorite treats. Fire is a less common method of seed dispersal. A forest fire can destroy most plants in an area, creating an open space. Seeds designed to take advantage of this space live in cones held together by resin (树脂). The glue-like resin melts at the temperature of a forest fire, allowing the seeds to be released to begin regrowth of the forest. 1. Why do most plants disperse seeds? A. To keep the ocean clean. B. To help new plants grow. C. To satisfy human’s daily needs. D. To treat animals in the forest. 2. How does the writer introduce the ways of dispersing seeds? A. By showing the steps in order. B. By explaining cause and effect. C. By comparing and noticing what’s different. D. By providing the examples in detail. 3. What does “a squirrel is nature’s gardener” probably mean? A. Squirrels are born gardeners in nature. B. Squirrels can help people take care of gardens. C. Squirrels like planting acorns instead of eating them. D. Squirrels help disperse seeds because they forget where to find seeds. 4. Which of the following sentences from the passage is an opinion? A. Seed dispersal is an interesting topic of study. B. Fire is a less common method of seed dispersal. C. Wind, water, animals and even fire help scatter’ plant seeds. D. Some plants, such as dandelions, have seeds that are small and light. 【答案】1~4 BDDA Passage 2 Monkeys often help each other to raise their young babies. A new study has found that snub-nosed monkeys(金丝猴) actually choose babysitters based on who has the most parenting experience. This discovery was made by accident by a team of researchers at the Southwest Forestry University in China. While studying black-and-white snub-nosed monkeys during the baby season in Baimaxueshan National Nature Reserve(自然保护区), they noticed that the monkeys often passed around their newborns. They took turns to clean, carry, or even feed them. This behaviour reminded the researchers of how humans babysit for each other, so they decided to watch the monkeys more closely. They followed the group every day for six months. There were more than 400 moments where a female monkey spent time with a mother and newborn. These moments involved cleaning the baby or gently pulling them closer. Once the babies had grown up a bit, the mothers were more willing to let other females take care of them. They usually picked babysitters who had more experience with young monkeys. Younger females with less experience would still be allowed to look after the infants, but usually after a more experienced monkey had finished helping. Chun-Yan Cui, one of the researchers, told New Scientist magazine that this was a good chance for the younger females to learn how to take care of babies, so they would be ready to care for their own babies in the future. She also said that more research needs to be done to find out if mothers choose babysitters based on the social status of monkeys or family relationships. 1. What did the new study mainly discover about snub-nosed monkeys? A. They usually feed their babies alone. B. They choose babysitters with more experience. C. They take care of babies in human-like ways. D. They choose babysitters based on age. 2. How did the researchers learn about the babysitting behavior of the monkeys? A. Through a planned experiment in the lab. B. By training monkeys to care for babies. C. By chance during another field study. D. From notes in an old research report. 3. Which of the following images best matches what the researchers saw during the baby season? A. B. C. D. 4. What can be inferred about the role of younger female monkeys in the babysitting process? A. They help after experienced females and use the chance to learn. B. They only help when the mother monkey is not around. C. They are not allowed to help because they might harm the babies. D. They usually lead the babysitting while older monkeys rest. 5. What is the purpose of the last paragraph? A. To introduce the background of the research team. B. To explain the parenting habits of male monkeys. C. To point out areas for future research and learning. D. To compare monkeys with other animals. 【答案】1~5 BCBAC 三、还原型阅读 Passage 1 Many people say dolphins are smart. They seem to be able to think, understand, and learn things quickly. Now over 100 years old, like a huge umbrella, it has offered a place for people to relax. However, the tree faced a great challenge around two years ago. In January 2023, workers tried to move the camphor tree to clear space for a new project. Their carelessness cost the tree all its leaves and branches. Locals were shocked. Luckily, they knew where to turn for help. They found Zheng Shuhong, a deputy to the Fuzhou Municipal People’s Congress (福州市人大代表), who was responsible for environmental protection. To solve the problem, Zheng with two other deputies reported the problem to the local government and successfully stopped the project. In a follow-up study, the deputies found that the ancient tree was not protected by any law. So the deputies wrote their suggestions into a report and sent it to the Fuzhou Municipal People’s Congress. On March 15, 2025, China introduced its first national level rules to protect ancient trees. The new rules contribute a lot to the protection of ancient trees. They consider all trees over 100 years old as ancient. And they make them known to people around. Besides, after finding these trees, experts will go to check them and watch over each tree’s growth, with special signs placed nearby. What’s more, each tree will have a “tree keeper” to look after it every day. Now, about10, 000 ancient trees across Fuzhou are protected almost 10 times more than before. The camphor tree in Xujia village stands taller than ever, its branches once again stretching like a protective umbrella over the community. 1.
