My grandfather loved fishing. When I was a child, he often took me to fish at a small lake near our town. I remember one trip very well.
It was a bright and sunny morning when we set off. The lake was calm, and the water was very clear. We rowed our small boat to a quiet place where my grandfather said we could always catch fish. He put some bait (鱼饵) on my fishing line and showed me how to throw it.
We sat quietly for a long time, waiting for a fish. I was starting to get impatient when suddenly I felt a pull on my line. I was so excited and began to pull it in. It was hard work, but finally, I caught a small but beautiful fish. My grandfather praised me and took a picture of me with my fish.
After that, we had a small picnic on the boat. We ate sandwiches and drank lemonade while enjoying the quiet around us. Then we kept fishing. As the sun began to go down, we had caught several more fish.
On our way back, we met a small storm. The wind got stronger, and the waves shook our boat. I was a little scared, but my grandfather stayed calm. He rowed without stopping, and we got back to land safely.

A new study has found that horses can smell fear in humans’ sweat (汗水) and that it makes them have the same feelings.
People have believed for many years that horses can “smell fear,” and riders are often told to relax in order to keep their horse calm. Past studies have found that horses pick up human feelings from our facial expressions (面部表情) and voices. Recently, a team of researchers set out to see if horses can notice people’s feelings from smell alone.
In the study, 30 people were asked to watch videos of happy scenes while cotton pads (垫子) under their arms collected their sweat. Then, with new pads under their arms, they watched a scary film.
The researchers then divided 43 horses into three groups. The animals wore muzzles (口套) that fit over their nose and mouths. One group was given a muzzle with a pad of happy sweat in it, one group received a pad from the scared people, and the third group had a clean, untouched pad.
The team tested the horses to see how they behaved to unexpected events, such as an umbrella being opened near them or an unfamiliar object being placed in front of them. Horses that wore the “fear” muzzle acted more scared. Their hearts beat faster, they were more likely to be startled (受惊), and they showed little interest in the new object or going near humans.
“Horses become more afraid because they smell fear from people,” lead study author Plotine Jardat told CNN. “The important thing is that horses can smell how we feel, even if they can’t hear or see us.”
The researchers hope that understanding horses’ feelings better can help people get along better with the animals and improve horse health and happiness. Stressed or scared horses sometimes act in dangerous ways — for example, they might kick or run away. That’s why it’s important for people to stay calm. It helps keep everyone safer around horses.
31. How did the researchers collect sweat from the people?
A. By exercising. B. By watching videos.
C. By wearing muzzles. D. By using cotton pads under the arms.
32. Which group of horses was the most scared?
A. The group with clean pads. B. The group with scared sweat pads.
C. The group with happy sweat pads. D. The group that watched scary movies.
33. Why should riders stay calm around horses?
A. Because riders need to collect sweat.
B. Because horses will run away if riders are happy.
C. Because horses prefer calm riders for better performance.
D. Because horses can smell fear and may become scared and dangerous.
34. What is the best title for the text?
A. A New Way to Collect Sweat B. Horses Can Smell Fear in People
C. How to Stay Calm Around Horses D. Why Horses Kick and Run Away
35. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A storybook. B. A travel guide.
C. A science magazine. D. A pet hospital poster.

Want to take better care of your mental (心理的) and thinking health? Experts suggest starting with small changes. Here are four easy ways to feel calmer, more focused, and well-rested.
Tidy up one small space. If your home is a mess and your mind also feels cluttered, try “soft tidying”. Instead of cleaning everything at once, pick just one area — like a junk drawer — and spend a few minutes organizing it. This small action can help you feel more in control. As organizer Tara Bremer says, “If it’s just one junk drawer, be the boss of that drawer.”
Spend time in nature. If you’re losing focus, go outside for a walk in a park or forest. Studies show that being around trees, water, and rocks helps improve attention, creativity, and mood. Nature is gently interesting — it lets your brain rest without boring you. In one study, people who walked in a garden did better on memory tests than those who walked in a city. Their brains also rested more and worked better afterward. Researcher Amy McDonnell explains: “After time in nature, the brain comes back stronger and more focused.”
Get good sleep. All sleep helps your brain, but two kinds are especially important: deep sleep and REM sleep. During deep sleep, your brain cleans out waste. During REM sleep, it deals with emotions and new things you learned, saving them as long-term memories. Try to get enough sleep each night, and go to bed and wake up around the same time every day.
If you have trouble falling asleep, try “cognitive shuffling” instead of counting sheep. Pick a random (随机的) word like “Pluto.” Think of words that start with “P” — like “plane,” “poodle,” “play,” “peaches” — and picture each one for a second. When you run out, move to the next letter (“L”) and do the same. This easy game stops you from thinking about worries but does not make your brain too active — helping you fall asleep.
36. What can we learn about “soft tidying”?
A. Cleaning takes too much time every day.
B. Tidying should be done as quickly as possible.
C. A messy home always leads to an unhealthy mind.
D. Starting with a small area can bring a sense of control.
37. What does the word “cluttered” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Tired and sleepy. B. Worried and afraid.
C. Busy and not tidy. D. Quiet and peaceful.
38. What can people get from spending time in nature?
A. It makes people feel less tired during the day.
B. It helps people sleep better and wake up earlier.
C. It makes people forget about their worries completely.
D. It helps people to focus more easily and think more clearly.
39. What does the writer suggest about sleep?
A. REM sleep helps process memories.
B. People should sleep as much as possible.
C. Deep sleep matters more than REM sleep.
D. Going to bed at different times each night is fine.
40. How does the writer help readers understand “cognitive shuffling”?
A. By giving a step-by-step example.
B. By explaining its scientific background.
C. By comparing it with other sleep methods.
D. By listing opinions from different experts.

There are times when you need to give someone a pep talk (加油打气). Maybe your partner lost his job. ____41____ Sometimes, you yourself need encouragement. Here are some simple ways.
Be clear. Don’t just say “You can do this!” Take time to understand what they are really worried about. If your brother is nervous about giving a speech, tell him you understand his fear. ____42____ Then, offer to practice with him. This shows you care and gives him help that fits his needs.
____43____ We often cheer people on for big challenges, like running a marathon (马拉松). But we forget about everyday problems. Yet these small moments matter. If a friend feels stressed by homework or chores, send a simple message: “I believe in you.” Small acts like this can make a big difference.
Sometimes, just listen. ____44____ If a friend is sad because their pet died, see if they want solutions. If not, just show you care. Tell them you understand their pain. Let them know you are there for them. Just being there can make them feel better.
Keep it simple. Whether you’re cheering others or yourself, a pep talk doesn’t need to be long. Leave a short note saying “Don’t give up!” on a classmate’s desk. Send a message to a friend who failed an exam. Simple words like “I believe in you” can help a lot. You don’t need to be perfect. ____45____
A. Don’t wait for big events.
B. Ask what makes him most nervous.
C. You don’t always need to give advice.
D. Big events need bigger support from people.

I will always remember that fishing trip with my grandfather. I have learned a lot from it.

【答案】36. D 37. C 38. D 39. A 40. A

AI in Learning
AI tools are widely used in our studies. For example, my classmate Li Ming often uses an AI app to practice English speaking. It corrects his pronunciation immediately and gives useful suggestions.
I believe AI can make learning more efficient and interesting. It provides personalized help, which is very valuable. However, we should not depend on it completely.
To use AI properly, we need to remember two points. First, use it as a helper, not a replacement for thinking. Second, choose reliable tools and protect personal information. In this way, AI will truly benefit our studies.
