B
It was half past seven on Monday morning. Jay Stone got out of bed. He did a couple of wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror and looked at himself.
“Not bad, Stone,” he said to himself with a happy smile. Maybe he wasn’t ready for Hollywood, but with his dark brown eyes, he had the looks that turned everyone’s heads. He moved closer to check his teeth. “Perfect,” he thought. “Good enough for a toothpaste (牙膏) ad.” As his eyes moved down to his strong arms, he smiled again. The hours he spent in the gym (健身房) and doing sit-ups had paid off. How proud he was!
But suddenly, the smile froze. His eyes moved to his legs. They were too short for his body. Sitting, he was as tall as almost anyone. Standing, he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls.
Why didn’t his legs grow with the rest of his body? Where did his legs come from? He certainly didn’t get them from his parents. They were both quite tall. Looking through old family photos, he found the answer. It was his grandfather on his mother’s side. Thanks a lot, Grandpa!
Of course, the kids at school all noticed Jay’s short legs and they had a nickname (外号) for him: Stubs! Almost no one called him by his real name, Jay Stone. They all called him ‘Stubs’. Jay didn’t like his nickname, but he had to accept it. Just think about the helpless situation!
But the legs could do a lot of things. They were quick and strong. He could run faster than anyone else in Brewer High football team. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his speed.
Jay shook his head. “Stubs, Stubs Stone, the kid with short legs. Yeah, that’s me,” he smiled again with satisfaction.
Suddenly, he heard his mother’s voice. “Jay! It’s breakfast time!”
6. What did Jay do after he got up?
A. Did some housework. B. Did morning exercises.
C. Brushed his teeth. D. Took a shower.
7. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Jay was satisfied with his looks.
B. Jay wanted to be a film actor.
C. Jay once played a role in an ad.
D. Jay found it useless to do sit-ups.
8. Why did Jay have to look up at many of his classmates?
A. Because he was younger than them.
B. Because he preferred sitting to standing.
C. Because he wanted to show his respect.
D. Because his legs were shorter than most.
9. How did Jay’s feelings change in the text?
A. Sad→Helpless→Cheerful B. Pleased→Peaceful→Satisfied
C. Pleased→Helpless→Satisfied D. Nervous→Peaceful→Cheerful
10. What can we learn from the text?
A. We should pay more attention to our looks.
B. It’s impolite to call others by their nicknames.
C. Doing exercise can make us successful in sports.
D. Our weak points may also become our advantages.
B 7. A 8. D 9. C 10. D
定位原文第一段“He did a couple of wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror and looked at himself.”
结合“he went over to his mirror and looked at himself…How proud he was!”以及“But the legs could do a lot of things. They were quick and strong. He could run faster than anyone else in Brewer High football team.”
定位原文第三段“But suddenly, the smile froze. His eyes moved to his legs. They were too short for his body…Standing, he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls.”
梳理情绪变化:一开始Jay欣赏自己的外貌“he said to himself with a happy smile”,觉得开心满意(Pleased)→ 发现腿短、被同学起外号,“but he had to accept it. Just think about the helpless situation!”他只能无奈接受(Helpless)→ 最后发现短腿也能让自己在运动中表现出色“He could run faster than anyone else in Brewer High football team.”,重新接纳自己,感到满足(Satisfied),对应C选项。
C
Potatoes can be made into many kinds of tasty foods. But have you ever thought about where potatoes come from? My guess is probably not, as I’ve also been too busy enjoying them to think about it.
However, scientists now have a new idea. They think potatoes actually developed from an early kind of tomato plant. It was already known that tomatoes and potatoes were similar in some way. They have similar genes, making them very close relatives in the plant world. But scientists didn’t fully understand how the potato itself first appeared.
After carefully studying the genes of both plants, as well as wild potatoes and farm potatoes, scientists found something interesting. They found that each potato species (物种) has a mix of genetics from tomatoes. This means that tomatoes played a key role in the creation of potatoes. They now believe that wild tomatoes, which grew in South America millions of years ago, mixed with another wild plant. A process happened in which their genetic material mixed to form a new type of plant. This new plant slowly became the potato we know today. Over time, people began to farm it, and it spread all over the world.
“Tomato is the mother and the other wild plant is the father,” said Sanwen Huang, a professor who led the research team. “But this wasn’t clear at first. We didn’t expect them to be so close.” The team hopes that by understanding the potato’s history better, it can help scientists find new ways to grow potatoes in the future. Understanding its genes can also help them protect potato plants better from illnesses. This research opens new doors for farming and food safety around the world.

结合“However, scientists now have a new idea. They think potatoes actually developed from an early kind of tomato plant.”
结合“The team hopes that by understanding the potato’s history better, it can help scientists find new ways to grow potatoes in the future. Understanding its genes can also help them protect potato plants better from illnesses.”

C. Jay once played a role in an ad.

A. Because he was younger than them.
B. Because he preferred sitting to standing.
C. Because he wanted to show his respect.
D. Because his legs were shorter than most.
9. How did Jay’s feelings change in the text?
A. Sad→Helpless→Cheerful B. Pleased→Peaceful→Satisfied
C. Pleased→Helpless→Satisfied D. Nervous→Peaceful→Cheerful
