I was born into a very close family. It was just my parents and me.Over the years
I've noticed how well my parents manage to look after their health and how healthy they
are.I had never bothered to follow their example or been that curious about the secret of
their good health.I never realized what a great resource they could be.
I would look at them both,so slim, strong and healthy-much more so than me-
and think, how will I ever get to be like them?I'm constantly impressed by their
toughness. They have never taken any sick days from work, unless they really need to.
They don't need to visit the doctor much.Their habits are deep-rooted and it works for
them.
Part of their success is how efficiently they control what they eat.Their diet is
extremely healthy and they stick to it.For breakfast,it's porridge;lunch is salad or a
wholemeal sandwich with butter, garlic, raw onion and black pepper.Dinner is boiled
vegetables,or beans. Both of them grew up eating fresh, unprocessed food.
My dad is a bus driver, and my mum works part-time as a sales assistant. My dad
started skipping at the age of six.He is now a mini celebrity and is admired by people
worldwide with thousands of followers on social media. And my mum has won fitness
competitions at the gym.
In this respect,I was the complete opposite.I hated fitness and was lazy and unfit.
Last week I had a health scare;I found a lump (on my neck. After an examination,
it turned out to be fatty tissue, which isn't harmful but it could get worse unless I lose
weight or I have surgery. My parents said to me,don't get surgery, let us train you and
you'll feel much better.I wanted to take the easy option and have it removed. But I also
thought, maybe this was an eye-opener and a wake-up call for me to start getting fit.

The day before yesterday,my class played a basketball game.As their chemistry
teacher and class advisor,I watched as our team, led by Tom,the captain, fought hard.
姓名
Tom's quick moves and precise passes inspired his teammates. They battled as one,
making every play count. The game was intense, with both teams neck and neck.In the
final seconds,Tom made a daring drive to the hoop ()but the opponent scored a

last-minute shot.We lost by just one point.
The next morning, the classroom was filled with a heavy atmosphere.Tom sat
quietly, his head down, still weighed down by the loss. The rest of the class mirrored his
mood-silent and withdrawn. It was clear that the defeat had dampened their spirits.I
knew I had to do something to lift their spirits and remind them to pay more attention to
the process.
The first class of the day was chemistry. As I looked at the lesson plan quickly,an
idea began to take shape.I quickly prepared the necessary laboratory equipment and
walked into the classroom.
"Alright, everyone,"I said, trying to get their attention."I'm going to conduct an
experiment, and I want you to observe it carefully. You'll need to describe what you see
afterward."The room grew a little quieter as curiosity began to catch on.They turned
their attention to me,and I could see a sign of interest in their eyes.
I picked up a piece of magnesium ribbon (and held it with a holder. When I
brought it close to the burner fire, the ribbon started to flash. The whole class watched
the experiment in amazement, their eyes wide open, focusing on my operation in awe.
The magnesium ribbon burned away, leaving behind a soft white powder.

In the small coastal town of Seabrook, there lived a young boy named Timmy who
had a determined love for the ocean.Every day after school,he would rush to the shore,
spending hours exploring wave pools, and collecting seashells. He was very studious and
seized every possible opportunity to learn about the ocean. He often went to the town
library to absorb knowledge about the ocean from books as well. The more he learned,
the more he became obsessed with the ocean. He was always dreaming of becoming a
marine(海洋的)biologist.
However, one unusual afternoon,a powerful and unexpected storm swept through
the town, leaving destruction in its wake. The once-dynamic coral reefs (off the
coast were now covered in debris ()and the local marine life was struggling to
survive.
Timmy was heartbroken. He felt a deep sense of responsibility to help restore the
reefs and protect the ocean's inhabitants. With the support of his family and a few like-
minded friends,he organized a beach cleanup and started a fundraising campaign to raise
awareness about ocean conservation. But despite their best efforts, progress was slow,
and Timmy began to lose hope.
One sunny morning,as Timmy sat on the beach, staring out at the damaged reefs,
he noticed a group of divers approaching the shore.Among them was a famous marine
biologist who had heard about Timmy's story and was eager to help.
The marine biologist,Dr.Elena, approached Timmy with a warm smile."I've heard
so much about your contribution to ocean conservation,"she said."I'm here to offer my
help and expertise in restoring the coral reefs. This is my contact information. If you have
any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time."Timmy's eyes lit up with hope
as he listened to Dr.Elena's plan. She explained how they could work together to remove
the debris, plant new coral, and monitor the reef's recovery.Heartbroken no more,
Timmy felt a renewed sense of purpose and determination.

A Life-Saving Hero
My wife's job took her out of town a lot and I needed some company. So one day,I
went to the local animal--rescue center..The little cocker spaniel(可卡g猎犬)trembling in
a cage caught my eye right away. She had scared eyes and I could tell she longed to be
picked up and hugged.I gently petted her soft fur,and to my surprise, she stopped
shaking. That was that.I filled out the paperwork and took my new dog-Honey home.
I'd had her only a couple of weeks, but Honey and I quickly became close friends.
She followed me like a shadow from the very first day.She loved sitting on my lap.We
often went to the backyard, where I picked up a ball and threw it.I sat down to watch
Honey race after the ball.We had great fun together.
That October morning last year I decided to take Honey with me while I ran some
errands ()She jumped in and settled down on the passenger seat.I got behind the
wheel and started the car.We lived in a remote area up in the hills outside San Rafael,
surrounded by tall redwoods. We had to drive up the mountain at a low speed to get to
our driveway, which was barely wide enough for one car and ended at a steep cliff.
I turned around and backed up slowly.Just then,a flash of sunlight blinded me.I
put my hand up to protect my eyes.Suddenly, the car slipped on the soft soil and rolled
down the valley.I heard a horrible crash.A giant branch plunged (through the
roof and hit my leg.We landed upside down.I was stuck.I looked over to find Honey.
She was still in the passenger seat. She seemed scared but was not hurt.

When I was in my first year in high school,I landed an influential award for a science
project I completed. This honor earned me a spot in a study group organized by our
science teacher,Mr.Andy, while I was in Grade 10,where we were expected to tackle
challenging projects. My motivation was high,my groupmates enjoyed working with me,
and Mr.Andy often sought my input, which boosted my ego ()
One afternoon,Mr.Andy gathered our study group to introduce a new project. He
explained the project and the challenges we were expected to overcome. The room was
filled with excitement and anticipation as we dived into brainstorming ideas and dividing
tasks.I eagerly took the lead, assigning roles and setting deadlines, confident about my
ability to lead the group towards success.
I made it my ambition to be the best, most efficient member of my study group,an
ambitious goal since many of my groupmates were older and joined the group earlier than
me.Being the youngest member of my group,my immaturity was on display.I began to
question why the other members of my study group were not as enthusiastic as I was.I
often showed doubt about their ability. It seemed I was pretty full of myself.
That was when Mr.Andy called me into his office.I was prepared to be criticized.
Instead,Mr.Andy reached into his drawer and pulled out a sheet of paper that had a
poem written on it."Read this,"he said.Below is a part of that poem:
“Indispensable(不可或缺的)Man”:Sometime when you're feeling important/
Sometime when your ego's in bloom /.Just follow these simple instructions And see
how they humble your soul.
The poem described an exercise with a bucket of water, illustrating how our absence
may not leave as large a hole as we might think.

It was a sunny Saturday morning, and Jake had just put on his sneakers when his
phone buzzed. It was a message from Ryan:"Meet at the park in 15 minutes?"Jake
smiled. It had been a long week of school, and he couldn't wait to play basketball with his
friends.Just as he was heading out,his mom called from the kitchen.
“Jake!Come back!I need your help with the storage room.”
"But Mom,I told Ryan I'd meet him at the park,Jake protested.
"We talked about this.Grandma is moving in this weekend,so we need to clean out
the storage room to make space for her.
"Grandma?"Jake thought, the word feeling almost foreign on his tongue. He didn't
even know her that well-it had been years since she last visited, and now she was
moving in?He couldn't believe he had to give up his Saturday for someone he barely
knew. With complaints and sighs,he kicked at the floor as he trudged down the hallway,
dragging his feet like they weighed a ton.
Stepping into the storage room, his nose wrinkled in disgust. The place was a
disaster.Spiderwebs drooped from every corner, and dust swirled in the sunlight like
dirty smoke.Boxes teetered in unstable stacks,a rolled-up carpet with worn edges lay
half-spilled across the floor, and forgotten junk crowded every inch.Jake let out a long,
dramatic sigh-this job was going to take forever.
Just as he was about to give up and sneak a text to Ryan,a faded blue album tucked
at the bottom of the suitcase caught his eye.Faint words were etched on its leather cover:
Stories with Jake (To Be Continued...).He pulled it out and flipped it open-the pages
were filled with moments of him and his grandmother. On the very first page was a
photo:his grandmother,much younger then,cradling a tiny baby wrapped in a soft
blanket. At the bottom of the photo he saw some words in careful handwriting:"Glad to
meet you,baby Jake..”

When I was 21,I moved to Sydney, working as a waiter at a small local restaurant.I
wasn't sure what I wanted to do,and this uncertainty left me feeling lost. This big city
was a soulless place and everyone was just out for themselves. The only thing that truly
gave me comfort was playing the flute(笛子).
My connection with the flute began when I was 16.Determined to buy one,I worked
at a supermarket earning just $2.35 an hour. When I finally bought it,it became my
most valued possession.Every day I would come home and play it.The tunes helped me
process my emotions.
One day I was working at the restaurant when someone asked me what I was doing
that night.I said,"I'm going to be playing the flute at.."and then I suddenly realised
that I hadn't picked up my flute when I got off the train that day.I immediately and
completely freaked out(六神无主).
I raced to the train station to ask if it had been handed in.It hadn't,but I gave them
my number anyway in case it turned up.I just thought, well,it's gone-stupidly,I
didn't even have my name written on the case.I spent the following week in total guilt,
feeling sorry for myself.
Then, one day,I got a call from someone at CityRail saying they had my flute.I
went into the lost property place at Central and there it was, among all the lost bags and
umbrellas. As I went to grab it,the guards there asked for my ID.I told them I had lost
my ID,and that it would take several weeks to get a new one.And they said, well,
sorry-you've got to have your ID to get your flute back.

On a sunny weekend,17-year-old Tom joined a school camping trip to a remote
island.Tom,an enthusiastic photographer, was also a bit of a loner who often preferred
exploring on his own.He had taken a basic survival skills course but had never truly faced
a real-life emergency.
As the group stepped into the thick underbrush, the air was heavy with the scent of
damp moss and wildflowers, and Tom couldn't contain his excitement.Mr.Wilson,a
seasoned outdoors teacher, paused every few minutes to warn everybody to stay close. He
took out a bundle of small red flags.Every 20 steps,he tied a flag to a low-hanging
branch or a sturdy fern ()saying,"The flags, along with the gurgling stream nearby,
are your lifelines. They'll boost your chance of survival."Most students watched
carefully, but Tom,half nodded absent-mindedly,half distracted by the calls of rumored
golden-winged parrots, gradually drifting away from the group.
A moment later,Tom was photographing the mouth-watering Acai berries (

there was no one around-he was all alone.Quickly Tom stuffed his camera into his bag
and tried to retrace his steps. But the sky darkened abruptly,a fierce wind tore through
the trees. The heavy rain came pouring into a muddy mess, washing away any signs of
the trail. His phone already low on battery died completely because he pressed it in a wild
manner to call for help.Tom stumbled(蹒跚而行)through the mud,his sneakers
stained with dirt and water dripping from his hair.
As night fell, the downpour stopped but the temperature dropped below freezing,
and the cold bit through his clothes.Through the bitter wind,he heard a chilling sound-
the distant howl of wolves.Heart pounding heavily,Tom was in a complete panic, with
