Building Skills
A2 Linda is preparing for the five-kilometre race. She is now seeking some advice from her PE teacher, Mr Wu. Listen to their conversation and complete the notes below.
walk or jogging
running, walking and resting
Do some stretching
typical schedule
30 minutes
one day a week
Listening and speaking, A2
Mr Wu: Linda, you look a bit worried. Can I help you?
Linda: You know, Mr Wu, it’s my first time to compete in a long-distance
running event.
Mr Wu: Don’t worry about the distance. You still have four weeks to prepare
for the race.
Linda: OK, how should I prepare, Mr Wu?
Mr Wu: Well, there’re a few tips to follow. First of all, it’s important to build
your aerobic base. It helps you increase endurance. And building
your aerobic base is simple. Exercise like a 20-minute walk or jogging
would work.
Linda: So you mean I don’t have to run five kilometres as fast as I can, when I
start practising?
Mr Wu: No, you shouldn’t aim for five kilometres at first. You only need to
increase the running distance gradually and steadily.
Linda: That’s good to know.
Mr Wu: Yeah. You can start with a mix of running, walking and resting. This
combination helps reduce the risk of injury and stress.
Linda: That sounds less challenging. Is there a typical schedule?
Mr Wu: Yes. For instance, during the first week of your training, you can run
for 15 seconds and walk for 45 seconds.
Linda: And then repeat?
Mr Wu: Yes. Repeat the cycle for 30 minutes. And gradually increase the
amount of running and reduce that of walking. One day a week,
make it a rest day, so that your muscles will have time to recover.
Remember, you always need to do some stretching before and after
each training. I’ll send you a detailed schedule.
Linda: That’s great! Thank you, Mr Wu!
Mr Wu: You’re welcome. Good luck!
Reading
After his conversation with Dr Chen, Leo wrote an email to his friend Rachel. Read the email below and make a list of the reasons why Leo is unwilling to begin working out regularly.
Reasons for not taking up exercise:
He has no time for exercise!
He is concerned about money.
He will give up without a partner.
No time
No money
No partner
While-reading
Hi Rachel,
Hope you're doing well. I've been feeling a bit under the weather recently: generally tired and not myself. Today I went to see the doctor. She offered me some advice on my diet. She also said I needed to do more exercise.
I know that I'll have a better immune system and higher energy levels if I exercise. To be honest though, I don't know how to make exercise a regular part of my life. You know, it's really difficult to fit exercise into my busy schedule. I have so much schoolwork. Plus I take part in a lot of after-school activities. During the weekend, I often hang out with my friends. I simply have no time for exercise!
It isn't just about the time, though. I'm also concerned about money. I just can't afford to sign up for classes in the nearby gym. I do want to try swimming but the swimming classes are so expensive. So you see, I don't think I'd be able to work out in the gym.
Last but not least, I think it's hard for me to stick with an exercise routine. How boring it is to exercise alone! Imagine jogging along the same path every morning, repeating the same movement day after day and having no one to talk to! I'm pretty sure I would soon give up without a partner.
What would you do in my position? Look forward to hearing from you soon.

So you see, I don’t think I’d be able to work out in the gym.
I don’t think...是否定转移形式,表达的是“I’d not be able to work out in the gym.”。
eg: (1) I don’t believe he will come.
(2) I don’t expect he will go out tonight.
(3) I don’t imagine they will accept the offer.
(4) I don’t think you’ve met Daniel, have you?
(1) Do you think he will not be able to finish the work on time?
(2) Don’t you think he will be able to finish the work on time?
The teacher, I think, will not be angry with you.
I thought he would not return me the money, but I was wrong.
I _________ _________ you have seen this film before, __________ you?
I ______ ________ you can finish all the work on time on your own today.

Checking your writing
Sorry to hear you’re tired and struggling to fit exercise in. I definitely understand how you feel. But we can fix this!
To begin with, exercise can be fitted into your schedule. The key to exercising is sticking with it. It doesn’t have to last more than half an hour everyday; instead, ten-minute rope skipping daily is quite enough for you to improve heart and lung efficiency, muscle strength or flexibility. Furthermore, exercise does not necessarily require money. rope skipping requires nothing but a rope, which I believe you can totally afford. Last but not least, exercise can be done with your family or friends. Taking a walk after dinner with parents or playing ball games after school with friends would be a wise choice, which will make you feel loved and content.
I hope you will find these suggestions helpful. Take action and I’m sure you’ll have a happier and healthier life.
Dear Leo,
I’m sorry to hear that you haven’t been feeling well recently. But the doctor is right — you do need to exercise more. I have some suggestions that you might find helpful.
First, remember that you don’t have to exercise for 30 minutes or a whole hour non-stop. Instead, try to do small amounts of exercise whenever you can. For example, try taking the stairs up to your flat instead of the lift. When you study for a long time, remember to take regular breaks. Get out of your chair and move around a bit: take a walk or practise some dance moves.
Sample
Second, you don’t have to pay to exercise. Many forms of exercise can be done outside the gym. For instance, you can go running in your school playground, in the park or around your community. All you need is a pair of comfortable running shoes! Finally, I understand that exercising alone can be boring, but you could invite your family and friends to work out with you. Encourage them to take exercise too so that you can have fun exercising together. This way, you are more likely to stick with your exercise routine.
Hopefully, you’ll find these suggestions helpful. I’m sure you’ll soon be feeling happier and healthier.
All the best,
Rachel
Keep moving! Nothing is impossible to a willing heart!
Homework:
1.针对 Leo “没时间” 问题写 3 条建议,至少用 2 种提建议句式;
