Dear fellow students,
Traditional Chinese festivals are an important part of Chinese culture. They not only pass down the values, beliefs and customs but also serve as a chance to bring people together in a spirit of unity. Therefore, it’s our duty to protect them.
First, the government can declare public holidays on traditional festivals and raise people’s interest by filming festival-themed programs. Additionally, schools can organize workshops where students can learn about and celebrate these festivals. And, we students can spread what we have experienced and our stories about these festivals on social media.
Only with our joint efforts will people pay more attention to traditional Chinese festivals and be prouder of Chinese culture. Together, let’s embark on this journey of cultural exploration and celebration!

Tan Lei: Mum, I just came back from the fireworks display on the bank of the River Thames. It was just amazing!
Mum: Good for you! Who did you go with?
Tan Lei: I went there with my friends. The show started right after the Big Ben struck twelve on New Year's Eve.
Mum: How long was the show?
Tan Lei: Not long actually. More than 10,000 fireworks lit up the sky in only 12 minutes. Can you imagine that?
Mum: Wow! That must be colourful.
Tan Lei: Indeed. The night was filled with a shining explosion and the sky was lit up in every colour. People's faces caught the light of fireworks as well.
Mum: Were there a lot of people?
Tan Lei: You bet! The news said there were over 100,000 people from more than 100 different countries. People were all cheering, waving, hugging and wishing each other a Happy New Year. And we all sang an old Scottish song called"Auld Lang Syne" in the end.
Mum: I'm glad you had such a good time. But it's late and you'd better get somesleep now. By the way ... Happy New Year, my dear.

Listening and speaking, A2
Radio host: Hello, and welcome to today's show! New Year's Eve is celebrated all over the world with fireworks, parties and good food. But different countries welcome the New Year in different ways. Generally, people want to forget the troubles of the past and have good luck in the coming year. Today, we're going to look at some of the most interesting New Year celebrations around the world.
If you are celebrating the New Year in Spain, you will see people reaching for grapes. Spanish people eat one grape each time the bell rings at midnight-that is, one grape for each month of the coming year.
If you can finish eating all the grapes before the bell stops ringing, it is believed that you will be lucky in the year to come. And don't be surprised if you find lots of broken plates on the doorsteps of Danish people. They believe that broken plates can bring good fortune. As a sign of friendship, people come out and throw plates on their friends' doors on New Year's Eve. The more broken plates you have on your doorstep, the more friends you have.
