The program was to help elderly people who live alone. I was a little nervous at first because I didn’t know what to do. However, the experience turned out to be wonderful. I visited Mrs. Li, an 80-year-old woman. She lived by herself and her children lived in another city. Every Saturday, I went to her house and helped her do housework. I swept the floor, folded her clothes, and sometimes cooked simple meals for her. We also talked a lot. She told me many interesting stories about her life. Through this experience, I learned that volunteering is not just about helping others. It’s also about learning from others. Mrs. Li taught me how to be patient and kind. That’s what the National Garden Scheme (NGS) (国家花园计划) has been doing. The organization opens over 3,500 private(私人的) gardens in England and Wales for people to visit, and raises money through tickets, tea and cakes. The NGS has a rich and interesting history. At a meeting in 1926, Miss Elsie Wagg came up with the idea of raising money for district (地区) nursing through the nation’s obsession (沉迷) with gardening. A year later the NGS began to work and garden owners were asked to open their gardens for “a shilling (先令) a head”. As a result, 609 gardens opened and a total of £8,191 was raised that year. During the past century, the number of gardens grew, so the NGS was able to help more charities with a larger amount of money. Thanks to the kindness of garden owners, volunteers and visitors, it has donated a total of £70 million to nursing and health charities so far. It made a donation of £3.5 million in 2024 and about 70 pence (便士) in every £1 (1 pound=100 pence) went straight to organizations like Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Institute of Community Nursing. Volunteering is a great way to help others and make your life more meaningful. Many teenagers want to take part in volunteer work, but they don’t know how to start. Here are some useful tips for you to start your volunteer work. Find your interest The first step to be a good volunteer is to find what you are interested in. If you love reading, you can volunteer to read to the blind children. If you are good at sports, you can help teach children to play basketball in the community. You can also ask your teachers or parents for advice, or go to the local volunteer center to get more information. Pick a right project When you decide what to do, you need to pick a right volunteer project. You can start with something easy and short. For example, you can take part in a one-day park clean-up activity or help hand out leaflets for a charity show. You don’t need to start with a long or difficult project. Start with small actions You don’t need to do big things to be a volunteer. Even small actions can make a big difference. You can help your neighbor’s child with his homework after school, or give your old books to the village school. You can collect bottles to raise money for poor children, or help the elderly cross the road. Keep trying Volunteering is not always easy. You may meet some difficulties at first. But don’t give up. Keep trying, and you will find the fun and meaning of volunteer work. 1.What is the passage mainly about? A.How to start volunteer work. B.Different kinds of volunteer projects. Vanessa, who is a researcher of human behavior once said that Tony the Tiger has some of the best body language we can learn from. The picture is Tony the Tiger’s typical pose on every cereal box across America. Researchers have found that the broader we stand, the more powerful we feel. So by examining Tony’s pose, we see that he is standing very broadly with his feet. If you look closer, you’ll see he is pointing upwards, as if he were saying, “I am going up” or “________”. If you look at Tony again, you can see his smile lines reach almost all the way up to his eyes. His smile is not only open, but it is hugely expressive. This smile design makes Tony look incredibly happy, excited and optimistic. Tony the Tiger always faces forward. When we are talking with people face to face, we are showing a sign of respect. So if you look at the cereal box, you may feel like Tony is paying attention to you and this is exactly what kids like to see. An interesting study found that 57 out of the 86 cereal boxes had characters looking down. Imagine a child is walking around in the supermarket, hand-in-hand with his or her mom. The small child is looking up at all the boxes and they see the cereal characters looking down at them. When the child looks up and makes eye contact with the box, this attracts the child’s attention to that character. Making eye contact is great because it can increase feelings of love and interest! Great body language during the speech draws the audience’s attention to your points, and helps you connect with your listeners and build up a good relationship. Next time you are going to speak in public, just think about Tony, the Tiger! 1.Which is the most suitable sentence to fill in the blank “________”? A.This is me. B.I’m No.1. C.Who are you? D.Why not? 2.What can we infer from Tony the Tiger’s smile and forward facing pose? A.He wants to show respect to adult consumers. B.His smile and pose are designed to look powerful and attractive. C.He is trying to make kids feel scared and uninterested in the cereal. D.His pose and smile have no connection with the product’s appeal to children. 3.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about? A.Making eye contact with people is helpful. B.Characters can attract children by looking up. C.The number is useful to the study on characters. D.Many cereal boxes have characters looking down. 4.What’s the main purpose of the passage? A.To introduce Tony the Tiger. B.To tell people how to make a speech. C.To talk about Vanessa’s interesting study. D.To help people have better body language. 5.What is the structure of the passage? A. B. C. D. When people communicate, they use body language more than words. People’s body language shows important information just like speech does. When someone lies with their words, their body language often tells the truth. The next time you wonder if someone is telling you the truth, try watching their hands. A person who is being honest will usually turn one or both of their palms towards the other person. If a person is beginning to “open up” or share important information, you may notice them turn their palms towards you. Like most body language, this unconscious (无意识的) gesture usually gives the other person the feeling that the speaker is speaking honestly. When people lie, they tend to hide their palms by putting their hands behind their back or holding them. Others will keep their hands in their pockets if they are lying or trying to hide information. Salespeople are sometimes trained to watch out for this specific example of body language when a person is saying that they can’t afford a product or service. Sometimes professional liars try to use open-palm gestures to fool others. But a careful listener may tell it is a lie through their body language such as lack of eye contact and touching the nose. Research has also suggested that if people normally turn their palms to face their listeners, they tend to be more honest themselves. If you want people’s honesty, talk to them and ask them questions while keeping your palms turned out. This will put pressure on the people you are talking to. Human body language, emotion, and communication are directly connected. By showing that you are honest, with your palms towards people, your body language pushes others to tell you the truth. 1.Turning one’s palms towards others is a symbol of ________. A.confidence B.politeness C.patience D.honesty 2.What does the underlined phrase “open up” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A.敞开心扉 B.开辟 C.产生 D.取得 3.Why does the writer talk about salespeople in Paragraph 3? A.To show salespeople are very clever. B.To give an example of using body language in real life. C.To tell us not to buy things from dishonest salespeople. D.To explain why liars are hard to find. 4.What can we learn from the passage? A.All people who show their palms are telling the truth. B.Body language and words always say the same thing. C.Showing your palms outward can make others more honest. D.Liars can never fool people with body language. 5.What is the best title for this passage? A.Body Language and Honesty B.How to Talk with Salespeople C.Ways to Catch Liars D.The Importance of Communication Do you know face changing? The amazing skill in Sichuan Opera is used to express the changing feelings of characters. There are over 300 kinds of local operas in China. Among them, Sichuan Opera is one of the oldest. As the most important and the most interesting opera form from Southwestern China, it is popular in Sichuan, Chongqing and some areas of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. A large number of Sichuan Opera performances are staged throughout Sichuan Province, both in the countryside and in the cities. The opera has three special skills: changing faces, spitting(吐)fire, and rolling lights. Face changing, or “bianlian” in Chinese, is the most famous one. It is an important intangible cultural heritage. Only a few artists have picked up this skill. They know how to change Sichuan cultural masks magically. As they wave their arms and turn their heads, their painted masks change again and again. Face changing got its start about 300 years ago. In the beginning, opera artists changed the colour of their faces during performances by blowing into a bowl of red, black or gold powder. The coloured powder would stick to their oiled skin quickly. In another way, actors would cover their faces with coloured paste hidden in their hands. By the 1920s, opera artists began using layers of masks made of oiled paper. They could peel them off one after another in the blink of an eye.At present, the artists use full-face painted silk which can be worn in layers. 1.Face changing in Sichuan Opera tells ________. A.how the story goes on B.how the characters feel C.that the characters are busy D.that the characters are getting old 2.Opera artists perform face changing while ________. A.spitting fire B.doing magic tricks C.moving parts of their body D.singing along with the music 3.The last paragraph is mainly about the ________ of face changing. A.development B.importance C.popularity D.future 4.What can we learn from the underlined sentence? A.The artists may hurt their eyes when performing face changing. B.The artists can perform face changing in different ways. C.The artists need oiled paper to perform face changing. D.The artists can perform face changing very quickly. 5.What is the author’s attitude towards the face changing skill in Sichuan Opera? A.The author thinks it is an outdated and uninteresting skill. B.The author believes it is a significant and unique cultural heritage. C.The author considers it as a simple trick without much value. D.The author feels indifferent about this traditional art form. Have you ever been to a meeting where the person speaking is obviously not happy with what they’re saying? Maybe they’re telling you about a new product, but their body language tells you that they don’t believe in it. Or maybe they’re trying to make you believe something, but their body language makes them look unsure or even dishonest. Body language—the way we move, use our hands and face, and the expressions on our faces—is an important part of how we communicate with others. In fact, some experts say that it’s more important than the words we use. It can tell people what we really think, even if we’re not saying it out loud. So what does our body language say about us? Here are five things to look out for: Eye contact: In many countries, good eye contact shows that you’re interested and paying attention. But too much eye contact can be aggressive, while too little can make you seem bored or untrustworthy. Smiling: In most cultures, smiling shows that you’re friendly. But there are different kinds of smiles. A big smile with your eyes open wide shows happiness and friendliness. A small smile with your mouth closed shows politeness, but not necessarily happiness. Gestures: The way we use our hands can help explain what we’re saying. For example, if you’re talking about a tall building, you might use your hand to show how tall it is. But gestures can also be impolite, especially if you use them too much or too close to someone else’s face. Posture: The way we sit or stand can show how confident we are. For example, standing up straight with your shoulders back shows confidence, while crossing your arms can make you seem uninterested or defensive. Touch: Touching someone can show that you like or trust them, but it can also be a way of showing power. For example, if someone puts their hand on your shoulder, they’re showing that they’re in charge. Next time you’re in a meeting, try to notice what the other people are saying with their bodies. Are they telling you the same thing as their words? 1.The passage is mainly about ________. A.body language in foreign restaurants B.class discussion in Indian schools C.body language in communication D.English teaching in other countries 2.According to the text, why is body language considered important in communication? A.It shows our true thoughts and feelings. B.It helps us communicate without any words. C.It makes us appear more confident and trustworthy. D.It is the main way of communication in some cultures. 3.What does the underlined word “aggressive” in Paragraph 4 mean? A.Strange and funny. B.Unfriendly and rude. C.Confident and excellent. D.Cool and smart. 4.What does the text suggest about posture? A.Crossed arms can show someone is not interested. B.If you want to show your interest, you can raise your hands. C.Good posture can show others that you are nervous. D.Posture has no influence on communication. 5.According to the text, which of the following is NOT true? A.Smiling means friendliness and happiness in many countries. B.Touching someone shows that you trust and like him/her. C.Overusing gestures can make the listener uncomfortable. D.Eye contact is not useful in communication. 三、U3单元话题热点预测 Everyone has their favourite cartoon character. For me, my favourite one is Spider-Man. D.Because the garden owners in Britain were very rich. 3.How many pounds went straight to organizations like Macmillan Cancer Support in 2024? A.About £2 million. B.About £2.45 million. C.About £3.25 million. D.About £3.5 million. 4.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A.The National Garden Scheme started to work in 1926. A.Body Language and Honesty B.How to Talk with Salespeople C.Ways to Catch Liars D.The Importance of Communication 【答案】 1.原文第2段提到:“If a person is beginning to “open up” or share important information, you may notice them turn their palms towards you. D.The author feels indifferent about this traditional art form. 【答案】1.B 2.C 3.A 4.D 5.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了川剧的变脸绝技,包括变脸的作用、表演方式、发展历史,以及作者对这一非遗技艺的态度。 1.首段直接点明:“The amazing skill in Sichuan Opera is used to express the changing feelings of characters.”,说明川剧变脸用于展现角色的情绪变化,对应选项B“how the characters feel”,答案为原文直接信息。 2.第二段明确描述:“As they wave their arms and turn their heads, their painted masks change again and again.”,说明变脸是演员在挥动手臂、转头等肢体动作中完成的,对应选项C“moving parts of their body”,答案为原文直接信息。 3.最后一段按时间顺序,依次介绍了变脸从约 300 年前起源、20 世纪 20 年代用油纸面具,到如今使用多层真丝面具的演变过程,核心是讲述变脸技艺的发展历程,对应选项A“development”,答案为对段落内容的概括总结。 4.划线句“They could peel one after another in the blink of an eye.” 中,“in the blink of an eye”意为“眨眼之间”,直接体现出变脸动作的极快速度,对应选项D“The artists can perform face changing very quickly.”,答案为对原文语句的语义解读。 5.第二段明确提到“It is an important intangible cultural heritage.”,结合全文对变脸技艺的正面介绍,可推断作者认为变脸是重要且独特的文化遗产,对应选项B“The author believes it is a significant and unique cultural heritage.”,答案为对作者态度的概括总结。 Have you ever been to a meeting where the person speaking is obviously not happy with what they’re saying?
