Have you ever entered a room and suddenly forgotten why you went there? It is because the
brain often considers going through a door as entering a new place. This causes you to lose your
memory for a while and forget why you went there.
This is just one example about how our memory works in our brain.Forgetting really makes
people unhappy, but our brain can only work in this way-by staying in a balance of forgetting
something easily and remembering something clearly. Our memory shapes who we are and allows
us to form relationships. It is also a tool for keeping us alive.By learning what's dangerous and
remembering simple information like where to live comfortably or where to find food, humans
make better choices about what will be good for us and what to avoid.
When leaming new information, whether it's a challenging skill or a name of an object, the
brain forms new connections between neurons ()The busier the neural map is,the smarter
you will become. But just as a smart phone slows down when it stores too much information, your
brain also slows down when it has too much to deal with.It will actively forget some unused
information or unimportant feelings by making neurons less connected. This helps prevent too much
information and control terrible memories to keep people calm for daily life.
Forgetting also builds creativity.Long-term memories may make our thoughts and actions too
rigid()and prevent the brain forming new ideas. When you repeat doing things in the same
way, your brain will get used to rigid habits and thoughts.
Forgetting is sometimes considered a weakness, but it actually plays an important role.By
clearing out unnecessary information, the brain can better take notice of the important information
in order to help shape us and keep our mind healthy.
9.How does the writer start the article?
A.By giving an example.
B.By comparing numbers.
C.By offering suggestions.
D.By using famous sayings.
10.What does"It"in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.A smart phone.
B.The memory.
C.The brain.
D.The neuron.
11.According to Paragraph 4,forgetting can
A.keep people calm for daily life
B.encourage the growth of creating
C.clean up unnecessary information
D.help people get away from danger
12.What's the best title for this passage?
A.How can we have a better memory?
B.Why is forgetting not only a weakness?
C.Which is more important, forgetting or remembering?
D.When is the best time to learn the challenging information?

As we often use eyes to touch nature, most of us"lose"the ability to listen to the world.
Peter writes music. He likes sounds and uses natural sounds as part of his music. He often went
out to the wild with his microphone and recorded interesting sounds to put in movies or to use in his
own songs.Instead of trying to capture just the sound of one animal or bird,he recorded the sound
of everything all together-the animals, the trees, the wind and the earth. He called these recordings
"soundscapes"-the sound of a certain place.Every soundscape Peter recorded had a lot of
information.
Back in his workshop,Peter used a computer to make a picture of all the sounds going on in a
place. Each animal, bird and insect had its own place on the picture-its own notes in the music.
The busier the picture, the richer the life in that place."While a picture may be worth 1,000 words,a
soundscape is worth 1,000 pictures."Peter said."Our ears tell us the sound of every leaf and animal
and speak to the natural sources of our lives, which may hold the secrets of love for all things,
especially our own humanity(人类).”
But not everything is satisfying. When Peter began recording over forty years ago,he could
record for ten hours and get one hour of usable material good enough for a movie. Now,because of
human activities,it can take up to 1,000 hours or more to get the same thing. Some of the places he
has recorded over the years have slowly fallen silent. His sound pictures show that although nature
might look the same to humans,.it has lost part of its orchestra(管弦乐队).
So next time you are in the forests, try another way to look-shut your eyes, and listen.
13.Why did Peter record natural sounds?
A.To write songs for a music group.
B.To discover rich lives in the forest.
C.To use some of them in his music.
D.To make music about birds singing.
14.What does the underlined word "capture"in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Shut.
B.Catch.
C.Touch.
D.Check.
15.What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A.Recording sounds needs less material.
B.Sound pictures are the same as before.
C.Some beautiful sounds in nature are lost.
D.Human activities improve recording results.
16.What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
A.Nature is the source of our future.
B.Nature has wonders to be heard.
C.Making music enriches our lives
D.Making music needs information.

A Farewell Song
No dust is raised on the road wet with morning rain:
The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green.
I invite you to drink a cup ofwine again:
West of the Sunny Pass no more friends will be seen.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
Time flies, and you will soon graduate from junior high school. It might be a little sad to say
goodbye to your teachers and classmates. This same feeling was shared more than 1.000 years ago,
when the Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei(701-761)had to say goodbye to his friend Yuan Er.
The poem begins with a beautiful morning scene. After the rain, the road is clean and free of dust,
and the willows by the hotel are fresh and green. On that day's morning.Yuan Er is leaving for a
faraway place called Anxi (in today's Xinjiang).
The last two lines are the most well-known.The poet invites Yuan to drink wine because he
knows that life in Anxi will be tough. Most cities in China were prosperous during the Tang
dynasty (618-907),but the western areas were quite desolate )Wang thinks the journey to
the west will be full of hardship. So when Wang says"L invite you to drink a cup of wine again",he
is pouring both his care and good wishes into the cup. This sincere love for his friend made this poem
popular back then and it remains popular today.
41.Who wrote the poem"A Farewell Song"?
42.Which word in the poem rhymes with "green"?
43.What will the journey to the west be like according to Wang Wei?
44.What do you think of the poem?Write 30 words or more.
