“Knock,knock,knock”
One recent day at noon,I opened my eyes and found myself standing outside my apartment.

expecting my wife or daughters to answer.
"Coming!"a male voice replied. It sounded like mine, but much older.
The door opened suddenly, showing a robot-like figure.I looked around the flat before staring at
the metal person in great surprise.
"Come in,please!"the robot said."My human,Mr.Wu,
asked me to teleport you here."
“Teleport?"I was even more puzzled.“Where am I?Isn't
this my apartment?”
"It is,but it's Mareh 2054.You're in the future."
"Hi!Come in and have a seat!"An elderly man stepped out
of the living room.He must be me at 63.Luckily for me,he
looked very healthy.
"This is my personal humanoid,Wu BOT,"the man explained."Don't be surprised. These days,

"Wu BOT?!I just saw it performing high-energy kung fu alongside real masters on the CCTV
Spring Festival Gala(春节联欢晚会).”
"Mine is an updated model.I named it Wu Bot because my-and your-surname is Wu,"the
man said."But it performs kung fu quite well, and I practice Tai Chi with it every..."
A soft beep from outside the window interrupted(打鲚)him.A small drone(无人机)was flying in
the air.
"Just a second,"the man said."It's Tao BOT,delivering the birthday gift I ordered for my wife."
"Where is she?"I asked when he returned.
"She's traveling with her friends at Mount Lu,and she will be back tomorrow."

When Philip Sontag,a polar()researcher at Rutgers University,first visited Antarctica,he
brought back something unusual:a huge bag of penguin feathers().Now,his team have discovered
how to use these feathers to create a living map of mercury()pollution in the Southern Ocean.
Mercury, which comes mainily from gold mining(),builds up in the food chain and harms
animals'nervous systems. But only testing rocks, ice or soil can't tell how much it actually enters the
ecosystem.
Penguins can dispose of mercury through their feathers when they molt().So,Philip and his
teammates used those molted feathers to see where penguins took in mercury.Surprisingly, they found
out that mercury levels in the feathers are closely connected with carbon-13 levels, which differ
geographically and show where penguins feed.
The finding means that penguins can serve as living trackers()of environmental pollution.
By checking their feathers, the team could track how mercury moves through the ocean food chain over
time. For example, penguin species living near one another may have different mercury and carbon-13
levels because they migrate()and eat differently. This information could help build a map-like
database(数据库)for future protection and research.
Philip plans to collect newer feathers from more kinds of penguins and compare mercury levels in
their blood, food and feathers. He says the present mercury levels aren't high enough to harm penguins'
health.

As artificial intelligence (Al is more and more used to give people dally advice and guidance,a
new worry has come up:sycophancy. This means AI often agree with users too much, praise them,or
say they are right, even when they are not.Researchers warned that such behavior would commonly
appear in Al,even when users had ideas that are not right or proper, and that it would badly influence
people's bellefs and decisions.
To test their ideas, they tested 11 leading AI models to see how often this
happens. They found that Al agreed with users 49%more often than humans
would on average. This happened even when users talked about lying,
breaking the law,or doing other harmful things. In one famous online website
where people ask "Am I the wrong one?",humans almost never agreed with
the wrongdoer (0%).But the AI agreed with them 51%of the time-even
when the user admitted()to lying, cheating,or causing harm to others.
To understand the real effects of this sycophancy, scientists ran experiments with over 2,400 people.
In one part, test takers discussed a real past problem with an Al through live chat. The results were
surprising:after just one talk with a sycophantic Al,people became less willing to take responsibility
for their mistakes. They were also less likely to apologize or repair damaged relationships.Instead, they
became more certain that they were right all along.Worse still, even though the sycophantic AI made
them judge incorrectly, users still trusted it and preferred it over honest ones. This creates a dangerous
cycle:sycophancy causes harm, but because users like it,companies have little reason to stop it.
Why is this so worrying?According to the researchers, blind support-being told "you're right"
when you are not-can weaken our ability to correct ourselves.Social psychology tells us that
unnecessary praise can strengthen wrong, unhealthy ideas, stop people from taking responsibility for
their mistakes, and discourage them from fixing relationships after they do something wrong.Over
time,it may lead to more arguments with others and stop personal growth. For teenagers, who are still
learning how to handle disagreements and take responsibility, the risk is even greater.

The study shows that AI's blind praise is not just a small mistake in design or a little problem. It Is
a real social danger that influences how people see themselves and their relationships with others.
Scientists ask us to make AI that give honest feedback(),not only yes answers,by making better
rules, tests and watches. At the same time,we users should remember:an AI that always says "yes"
may not be your real friend.Small design choices in AI can bring big trouble,so we must be careful and
think carefully when we take advice from Al,to keep ourselves safe in the long run.
41.What does "sycophancy"mean in the article?
A.Praising and agreeing too much.
B.Giving honest and fair advice.
C.Asking the user many questions.
D.Always disagreeing with the user.
42.How did AI behave differently from humans in the online website test?
A.AI never gave any advice.
B.AI disagreed with most users.
C.AI agreed with wrongdoers more often.
D.Humans agreed with wrongdoers more often.
43.What happened to test takers after they talked with a sycophantic AI?
A.They stopped trusting all AI systems.
B.They asked for more honest feedback.
C.They became more willing to apologize.
D.They were less willing to take responsibility.
44.Why is sycophancy hard to stop according to the article?
A.It is too expensive to fix.
B.Users prefer and trust sycophantic AI.
C.Scientists can't find any facts of it.
D.Only one AI model has this problem.
45.Which of the following is the best title for the article?
A.Al:A Helpful Tool for Daily Life
B.The Hidden Harm of AI Sycophancy
C.How to Use AI to Get Honest Advice
D.Teenagers Should Stay Away from AI

help each other to freedom?
People with "crab mentality"do not want you to win or escape a bad situation.Instead, they will
try to pull you back down.(49),For example,if you want to start a business, they'll say,
"That's far too risky. You should just keep your safe job."If you want to take part in a singing contest,
they'll say,"I heard the judges are really mean.Don't embarrass yourself."
【九年级英语试题共10页】第7页
Now that we know what a person with "erab mentality"is like,it's worth asking:could we
sometimes be the crab in someone else's bucket? And how can we fight"crab mentality"?The first step
is to learn to recognize it in yourself.Once you are aware of your problem, you can actively find ways to
overcome it.Next, make it a habit to show happiness for someone's success. When your friend gets a
good grade or wins a prize,always say "You've earned it!"or "Let's celebrate your success!".Your
words can change your feeling.(50)
A.Soon, you'll start to feel like their success is your success, too.
B.It means,"If I can't have something,then you can't have it either."
C.The idea of"crab mentality"comes from the natural behavior of crabs.
D.This kind of thinking can help people avoid making mistakes in their life.
E.Their advice always seems helpful, but it is actually designed to hold you back.
F.Even worse, they sometimes wait until it has almost escaped before pulling it down.

Later in the 1870s,a new design with a big front wheel and a small back wheel became popular. It

stopping(56).
Then,in the 1880s,John Kemp Starley had an invention:the wonderful "safety bike".It had two
wheels of the same size,a chain to move the back wheel, and a lower seat. The safety bike could balance
(57)-it never threw its rider forward like the old high-wheelers.This made it much easier and
safer to ride.After that,air-filled tires()were added,making rides much(58).
Over time, bikes got lighter and better,(59)they became a common way to travel, used for

In1957,Gu Fangzhou(质方舟),a31-year-old virologist(病毒学家),was tasked with developing
China's own polio vaccine. At the time, other countries mainly used two types of vaccines. The first used
inactivated()viruses.It was safer, but it was expensive and less effective. The second was made
from weakened live viruses. It offered stronger protection and cost only about one-thousandth as much.
However, its safety had not been fully proven.
In the 1950s,most Chinese families were poor.An expensive vaccine was simply out of reach.Gu
chose the second, riskier path. After years of hard work,he and his team finally produced a live polio
vaccine in 1960.Gu volunteered to test it on himself and it turned out to be safe. Then,to prove the
vaccine's safety for children,he let his one-year-old son get vaccinated.Gu said it would be unfair to
ask other families to take a risk he would not take himself.Thankfully, nothing serious happened.
By the end of that year, the vaccine had been rolled out in 11 Chinese cities. But a new problem
soon arose:The vaccine had to be kept cold to stay effective. As a result,it was difficult to send it to
remote()places.Besides,children disliked the vaccine because it tasted awful.
One day,Gu saw his son eagerly reaching for candy.A light bulb went off in his mind:74.
He acted on the idea immediately.A year later, live polio vaccines in the form of sugar pills
were born. They tasted better and, more importantly, could stay effective at room temperature for
about five days. This way, more places could benefit from the vaccine.
The "sugar pills"saved millions of lives. They finally helped China get rid of polio.Gu passed
away in 2019,but our respect for him-and sweet memories of his great invention-will live on
foreyer.
