In the film Forrest Gump, there’s a famous saying: “Life is like a box of chocolates, and you never know what you’re going to get.” It’s the same with blind boxes.
Each of these small, sealed boxes has one of many toy figures (图形) in a series (系列). The buyer doesn’t know which figure they’ve gotten until they cut the packaging with scissors. The start of blind boxes can be dated back to lucky bags sold in Japan from the late 1860s. In recent years it becomes big business in China.
During the Double 11 shopping day, Pop Mart, a leading blind box company in China, sold 55,000 Labubu dolls on Tmall in just 9 seconds, according to a Tmall report.
One reason for their popularity is the fascinating appearance of the figures inside the boxes. They’re like mini cartoon characters. They can be placed anywhere in your home as a decoration (装饰). But another, perhaps more important reason people like them is the fun of being surprised.
“The most interesting thing about blind boxes is the difference between what you expect and what you get,” said Wen Xi, a blind box collector from Beijing. The excitement of getting the exact figure you want is like winning a lottery (彩票).
While the boxes are certainly making some people happy, others worry that children might spend too much money on these toys.
“The blind box business takes advantage of gambling psychology (赌博心理),” said Liu Chunsheng, a teacher at Central University of Finance and Economics. “Young people are likely to look for the excitement brought by uncertainty and higher risks, which leads to impulse buying (冲动消费).”
Last year, over 200,000 Chinese customers spent more than 20,000 yuan collecting blind boxes. Most of them were Generation Z, or those born after 1995, according to a report by Tmall.

① AI (artificial intelligence 人工智能) and machine learning refer to the ability of machines to learn and act intelligently. It means they can make decisions, finish tasks, and even tell the possible future results based on what they learn from data (数据).
② AI and machine learning already play a bigger role in everyday life than you might imagine. Health care, banking, video games, every search on the Internet you make…, all are driven by AI.
③ AI is going to change almost every field of modern life. Stephen Hawking said, “Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history.” And Hawking added at once, “Unluckily, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks.”
④ ▲ , especially when you consider some countries are racing to develop AI-enabled autonomous weapons It is also going to change and take the place of many human jobs. The same worries also come from the public. According to the survey result from Centre for the Governance of AI, 91% of the people (tend to and totally) agree that “AI is a technology that requires careful management” in Europe.
⑤ But rather than agreeing with an idea of a helpless future where all human jobs are given over to robots, some people believe AI will make our working lives better. It will improve the work of humans, and new jobs will appear to take the place of the old ones.
⑥ What’s more, machines become more intelligent and they are able to finish more human tasks. Things which only belong to humans like creativity and critical (批判性的) thinking, will become even more valuable in the future.
⑦ Like it or not, AI is here. Maybe changing ourselves and managing it well are the best way out. Just as Benjamin Franklin once said, “When you’re finished changing, you’re finished.”

B.Also, you can find AI serving our daily life in every possible field
C.Without doubt, AI is a fantastic technology to lead us into the future
D.Humans are surely more creative and better at many things than AI
23.What’s the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To warn us that AI will take humans’ place.
B.To show us that there are a lot of uses of AI.
C.To tell us that many people are worried about AI.
D.To suggest we prepare for the changes brought by AI.
24.Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?
A.①---②---③④---⑤---⑥⑦ B.①---②---③---④⑤---⑥⑦
C.①---②③---④⑤---⑥---⑦ D.①---②---③④---⑤⑥---⑦
25.What can we infer from Benjamin Franklin’s words in the last paragraph?
A.We should stop changing ourselves to face AI.
B.We need to keep changing and managing AI well.
C.We don’t need to change or worry about AI.
D.We are finished when we start to change.
In the 1890s, comic artists faced a funny problem: how to show characters were truly asleep instead of just lying down. 26 They needed visual (视觉的) forms for silent sleepers.
Early artists tried various solutions. Some used strange letter combinations like “zzggrrhh” or symbols like stars. 27 But none became widely accepted.
28 In Katzenjammer Kids, a comic by Rudolph Dirks, a snoring captain had “Zzz” floating above him. Readers immediately understood he was asleep while kids played tricks.
By the 1910s, nearly all comics used “Zzz.” 29 By 1918, language experts even added it to dictionaries as a symbol for snoring.
30 Today, people still use “Zzz” in text messages. For example, the English phrase “catch some Zs” means take a nap in English, which directly came from this comic tradition and later became a popular sleep-related phrase.
A.The challenge was showing a sleeping person without words.
B.Eventually, “Zzz” is regarded internationally as a symbol for sleep.
C.However, the idea of falling into deep sleep came from a classic comic.
D.Some artists even drew musical notes around sleepers.
E.One famous form entered the public view and changed everything in 1903.
F.Though Zzz is only a visual form, it has influenced language across the world.

34 Sam is worried about the Earth’s future, and wants to know how to start a club at school.

11.第二段提到“The start of blind boxes can be dated back to lucky bags sold in Japan from the late 1860s.”,这直接说明盲盒的起源可以追溯到19世纪60年代末在日本销售的幸运袋。
12.根据后文“The buyer doesn’t know which figure they’ve gotten until they cut the packaging with scissors.”
13.根据第七段中“The blind box business takes advantage of gambling psychology... which leads to impulse buying”和第八段中“Last year, over 200,000 Chinese customers spent more than 20,000 yuan collecting blind boxes. Most of them were Generation Z”可知,盲盒生意利用了人们的赌博心理,吸引了大量买家。

C

25.What can we infer from Benjamin Franklin’s words in the last paragraph?
A.We should stop changing ourselves to face AI.
B.We need to keep changing and managing AI well.
C.We don’t need to change or worry about AI.
D.We are finished when we start to change.
【答案】21.C 22.A 23.D 24.D 25.B
21.第④段指出:“According to the survey result…91% of the people…agree that ‘AI is a technology that requires careful management’ in Europe.”。
22.第④段空后提到:“…especially when you consider some countries are racing to develop AI-enabled autonomous weapons. It is also going to change and take the place of many human jobs.”。 A项“As we know, there are possible huge risks for society and human life.”
23.文章最后一段总结道:“Maybe changing ourselves and managing it well are the best way out.”。
25.最后一段引用本杰明·富兰克林的话:“When you’re finished changing, you’re finished.”。结合前句作者的提议“Maybe changing ourselves and managing it well are the best way out”,可以推断出作者借此名言强调人类必须保持自我变革的动力,并管理好AI技术。
【答案】26.A 27.D 28.E 29.B 30.F

27.根据“Early artists tried various solutions. Some used strange letter combinations…or symbols like stars.”
28.根据“In Katzenjammer Kids, a comic by Rudolph Dirks, a snoring captain had ‘Zzz’ floating above him.”
29.根据“By the 1910s, nearly all comics used ‘Zzz.’”和“By 1918, language experts even added it to dictionaries”可知,“Zzz”从漫画符号逐渐被语言体系接纳,选项B“最终,‘Zzz’被国际公认为睡眠的象征”总结段落,符合语境。故选B。
30.根据“Today, people still use ‘Zzz’ in text messages…became a popular sleep-related phrase.”

Dear Mike,
I’m glad to share with you some interesting facts about how AI helps us in learning.
First, AI can help me create a personalized study plan. It analyzes my strengths and weaknesses and gives me suggestions. Second, it helps me solve difficult problems. If I’m stuck on a math question, I can ask AI for help. Lastly, AI supports me in improving my language skills by checking my grammar and suggesting better ways to write sentences.
However, we should be careful. If we use AI too much, we might stop thinking for ourselves. We might also become less creative and depend too much on technology.
All in all, AI is a great tool, but we should use it wisely. Let’s use AI to help our learning, but not let it take the place of our own efforts.
Yours,
Li Hua
