On a Monday morning in Amsterdam, the work day began as usual for Jim. When finishing his coffee, Jim checked text messages on his phone. Then, he got his bag and went to the nearest railway station. He wasn’t there to take the train, though. Instead, Jim chose one of the public bicycles lined up outside the station. After unlocking a bike with a smart card, he set out for his job on the other side of the city. He joined other cyclists in the bike lanes (道), safely separated from car traffic.
Amsterdam wasn’t always bicycle friendly. In fact, cycling used to be dangerous, especially during the second half of the twentieth century. This was a time of rapid growth in Amsterdam. As people got richer, they were able to afford expensive goods such as cars. For the first time, driving became popular. Highways were built for cars. This meant there was less space for cyclists. Having had a long tradition of cycling, this was a big change for the city. As car traffic increased, so did the number of biking accidents. Many of the cyclists were children.
People in Amsterdam were angry. They organized protests (抗议) in the city streets. Government officers listened. Hoping to solve the problem quickly, they started to think of ways to make the city safe for cyclists again. Soon there were separate bike lanes, and some areas were closed to cars forever. The changes were so effective (有效的) that today Amsterdam is a model of biking safety for other cities around the world.

C. To see a friend. D. To ride a bike.
( )6. What does the passage tell about Amsterdam?
A. It has no highways for cars. B. It is always bicycle friendly.
C. It seldom sees changes. D. It is famous for biking safety.
( )7. What type of book is the passage probably taken from?
A. Science fiction. B. Romantic novel.
C. City culture. D. Detective story.
C
When I was young, my father took me outside to see the stars. Once we saw a comet (彗星)! It was the first comet I’d seen but wasn’t the last.
My name is Caroline Herschel. I was born in Hanover, Germany in 1750. When I was 22, I moved to England to stay with my older brother, William. He was a musician and he offered me singing lessons. I helped him with housework in return. I practiced hard and soon started singing at his concerts.
Life changed when William became interested in astronomy. He read about space late into the night. Breakfast often turned into a lesson about stars. I learned a lot from him. And we even started working together on a big project: building telescopes—the special tools for seeing faraway things.
To make the perfect mirrors for our telescopes, we heated metals and shaped them using special molds (模具). These molds were made from strange things, like dry horse waste. I had to break it into small bits. It was dirty work, but I didn’t mind. Someone had to do it.
Making the mirrors smooth was very difficult. William invented a machine to help, but he still had to work without stopping for hours once he began. He couldn’t even stop to eat, so I fed him and read stories to keep him happy and relaxed.
In 1781, William discovered something fantastic—a new planet! King George was so glad that he made William his astronomer. William made a telescope just for me. And I was able to search the sky along with him.
On August 1, 1786, I found something special too—a comet! I watched it carefully for one more night and discovered it was real. Now everyone is talking about my comet. They call it the Lady’s Comet.
This is the first comet I’ve ever discovered, but I don’t think it will be the last.
Historical Note: After Caroline discovered her first comet, King George paid her to be William’s assistant (助手). She was one of the first women astronomers to be paid for her work. She went on to find seven more comets herself between 1786 and 1797.
( )8. Why did Caroline move to England?

This is a tale of a lonely old woman. She lived in the white North. There, the night is long in winter and the day is long in summer.

One winter day, she walked out and saw a small white animal on the ice. It was a baby bear. The bear looked small and felt very cold. The old woman spoke softly to the bear, “Poor little thing. Come with me.” Then she carried him home.

Finally, she said to the bear, “It’s time for you to leave. Be safe. Be free.” She put her arms around his neck. Her tears ran into his fur. She was heartbroken.

In many countries of the world, people are saying, “We must do something about our rubbish. We don’t want our world to become a big landfill site (垃圾填埋场).”
In Ireland, the government was very worried about plastic bags so they decided to make people pay for them. Since 2002, Irish people have been paying for the bags they take home from the shops. Of course, they soon stopped buying new bags and started taking bags with them when shopping.
Some countries have made even bigger changes. In 2006, the people of Zanzibar decided to stop making plastic bags. They were worried the bags were killing fish and sea animals. They also said nobody could bring plastic bags into the country. Soon there were no plastic bags in the country.
One of the most exciting recycling ideas is Free cycle. It has grown around the world. People join a Free cycle group because they are looking for things or have things that they want to give to other people. Perhaps they have a chair they do not need any more, or they want a camera. They leave a message on the Internet to tell people what they want or what they are going to give. Nobody buys or sells anything — people give things to other people who want them. It helps with the environment because it recycles useful things.
Recycling is important and sometimes it is exciting too, but it is only one part of the answer. Using less and reusing are also important solutions to the problem of rubbish.

I’m Li Hua. I’m glad to be here to give a speech. My topic is “A Healthy Diet”.
As we all know, a healthy diet plays a vital role in our life. It can provide us with enough energy to study and play. Also, it helps build up our bodies and makes us stronger.
However, some bad eating habits are common among us. Many students love eating sweet food, which is bad for our teeth. And fried food is popular too, but it can make us fat easily.
So how can we have a healthy diet? First, we should eat regularly. Second, we are supposed to eat more fruits and vegetables, which are rich in vitamins. Third, drink more milk and water instead of sugary drinks. Last but not least, control the amount of food we eat and avoid overeating.
Let’s start from now on and form a good eating habit. Only in this way can we keep healthy and enjoy a happy life.
That’s all for my speech. Thank you for listening!
