The Beauty of Chinese Line Art
Hello, everyone! Today, I want to introduce a special kind of art that has a long history in China—Chinese line art (中国白描).
Chinese line art is one of the oldest and most famous art forms in China. It uses simple lines, like straight lines, curves, and circles, 16 the beauty of objects. You don’t need many colors, so black and white are enough to create amazing paintings.
Look at this lovely cat that is drawn with only lines. The artist uses thin lines for its hair and thick lines for its body. The lines are simple but they make the cat look 17 lively that everyone will fall in love with it at once. Chinese line art often shows nature, too—flowers, birds, mountains, and rivers. Many artists also draw traditional Chinese stories that are popular with children, like Ne Zha.
Why do people love Chinese line art? First, it’s easy to learn so that everyone can have a try. You can start with a few lines. Second, it’s 18 meaning. Every line tells a story. When you look at a line art painting, you 19 feel the artist’s heart.
Chinese line art is not just for artists. It’s for 20 . By learning to draw with simple lines, we can discover the beauty of composition and rhythm. It encourages us to observe the world with a keener eye, to see the hidden shapes and patterns in everyday objects. It is 21 a fun activity that you will really enjoy it.
Let’s appreciate the beauty of Chinese line art together!

Pablo Picasso was born on 25 October 1881 in Malaga, a city in southern Spain. His father was an artist who taught at the School of Crafts and enjoyed painting birds and animals. Under his father's 22 , Picasso started drawing before he could even speak. His first word was "lapiz", which means "pencil" in Spanish. At the age of nine, he completed his first oil painting, which showed a bullfight and a wide 23 in the background.
After the family moved to Barcelona, Picasso began studying at the School of Fine Arts. He completed the entrance exam within one week, when it 24 took students several months. By the time Pablo was 13, his father was beginning to think that Pablo might soon master more painting skills than he himself had. When Picasso was 16, his family sent him to Madrid to continue studying art, but he didn't enjoy the strict teaching style there. He preferred visiting art centres and museums 25 sitting in class. There, he became inspired to continue painting in his own style.

During his first solo art exhibition in Paris, Picasso 26 a young artist named Carles, who later became his best friend. And soon the two were sharing a small studio together. It was often so cold that Picasso was forced to burn his artwork to keep warm. When Carles died, Picasso felt deeply sad and began his Blue Period(1901-1904), painting only in blue tones to 27 his feelings. Later, he started using warmer colours, such as pink and orange, during his Rose Period(1904-1906).
In 1909, Picasso and Georges Braque developed a new art style called Cubism which painted objects from different 28 and angles. Picasso also became one of the first artists to use collage(拼贴图) in his work, which showed how 29 and open-minded he was in exploring new forms of art.
Throughout his long life, Picasso kept exploring new ideas. He produced paintings, sculptures, prints and ceramics until his death in 1973. Today, his art is celebrated around the world.

The New Year
One pleasant New Year morning, Edward woke up and washed and dressed himself. He was in a hurry as he wanted to be the first to wish people a happy New Year.
He ran into the street repeating them to everyone he met.
When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. He smiled as he took them. He had wanted for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
As he ran down the street, he saw a poor family. The father, mother and three children were shivering(颤抖) with cold.
“I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, as he happily passed by. The man shook his head and smiled sadly.
He said, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in trouble. He took out his two dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife.
How their eyes shone with happiness! They said, “We thank you a thousand times, and will remember you in our prayers(祈祷).”
When Edward came home, his father asked what books he had bought.
Edward hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up.
“I have bought no books,” said he. “I gave my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry and in trouble. I think I can wait for my books till next New Year.”
His father was pleased. He said, “My dear boy, here is a whole bundle of books. I give them to you, more as a reward(回报) for your goodness of heart than as a New Year gift. Always be ready to help the poor, and those in trouble. That way every year of your life will be a happy New Year to you.”

The most important job
My parents got Federico's Family Laundromat(洗衣店)from my grandfather. It was a true family business. My father worked the washing machines while my mother sat at the sewing machine. My Aunt Gloria was responsible for the cash desk. Even my retired grandfather offered to (41) _________by doing some cleaning now and then.
My father used to say that the most important machine in the laundromat wasn’t the washing machine, the cash desk, or the sewing machine. It was the coffee pot that sat by the entrance. The coffee was free, and almost every customer would have a cup and chat with my family while waiting for their clean clothes. In the hours after school or on weekends, it was my job to keep the coffee pot filled. At least ten times per day, I would clean up the wet coffee grounds(咖啡渣), weigh 40g of beans, fill the pot with water, and turn on the coffee machine. It was such a(n) (42) _________ job that I could have done it in my sleep.
I remember complaining to my father one busy day. “Why do we have to give away coffee? We’re a laundromat, not a coffee shop!” I said (43) _________. My father was surprised at my attitude and immediately stopped what he was doing to talk to me. He took a seat across from me, and with a patient but serious look on his face, he spoke:
“Son, people can wash their clothes at any laundromat in town. They come to ours because we serve them like friends. We offer them a cup of coffee. We chat with them, laugh with them and connect with them. People don’t just need a place to clean their clothes. They need friendship. That is why your job is the most important job in the laundromat.”
My father’s words had the expected effect. From then on, I even weighed the coffee beans more carefully, making sure that the coffee would turn out just right. (44) _________, I had the most valuable job in the laundromat, and that was worth taking seriously.

Tied to our art
Do you wear clothes with colourful patterns? Nowadays, most of these patterns are dyed (染) by machines. But how did ancient people dye their clothes?
Ancient people used tie-dye (扎染). Tie-dye is a very old way of dyeing clothes in China—it’s about 1,500 years old! It is popular among the Bai ethnic group(白族)in Yunnan. The Bai people usually make blue dye from plants. During the Tang and Song dynasties, people gave tie-dyed clothes to the emperor as gifts.
To tie-dye, you first need to use threads to tie your cloth together. Then you put the cloth into the dye. As the cloth is folded and dyed, some parts become dark blue, while other parts have a lighter colour. When you open out the cloth, you’ll see beautiful patterns.
The tie-dye technique became China’s national intangible cultural heritage(中国国家级非物质文化遗产)in 2006.
Yang Cheng, over 50, learned tie-dye from his mother in the 1980s. Now he is still doing the job and has passed the skill down to his daughter. At the same time, he studied tie-dye in other countries, such as Japan, India and France. It once took Yang two years to make two tie-dyed wedding dresses! He used many skills of tie-dye. Some patterns on the dress are traditional, while some are modern. He used images of Dianchi Lake and eight popular flowers in Yunnan. “For beauty and culture sharing,” Yang said.
Yang now teaches tie-dye in schools, communities and companies. More than 60,000 people have learned from him. Some worry that tie-dye machines are faster and cheaper. But Yang said, “__________________________________________________________.”
