Last summer,I volunteered at a small woodworking studio in the old part of our city.
It was there that I met Mr.Chen,a 58-year-old master craftsman whose hands told stories
of decades working with wood. While his workshop was filled with traditional tools, what
he created was anything but conventional wooden furniture that perfectly blended classic
craftsmanship with contemporary design. What struck me most was Mr.Chen's unique
perspective on what he called "new-era craftsmanship".Though he learned woodworking
from his father as a teenager,he never confined himself to old methods.Recognizing the
changing preferences of younger customers,he spent evenings teaching himself 3D
modeling software and weekends researching sustainable materials like bamboo composites
and water-based finishes.
I witnessed his innovative approach firsthand when a young couple asked for a custom
bookshelf for their small apartment. They needed something space-efficient,eco-friendly,
and easy to tear apart for potential moves.Mr.Chen embraced the challenge
enthusiastically.
Over the next week,he created multiple digital prototypes ()experimented
with three different types of wood, and reinvented traditional techniques to create
interlocking joints that required no metal fasteners.I often found him working late, his
experienced hands carefully testing each component. When I asked why he invested such
extraordinary effort into what seemed like a simple project,he paused from his work and
smiled."True craftsmanship isn't about blindly repeating what our ancestors did,he
explained."It's about understanding the essence of tradition while having the courage to
adapt it for today's world. To illustrate his point,he showed me two bookshelves-one
he made twenty years ago, beautiful in its solid construction, and the new prototype,
which used thirty percent less material while being equally steady and more functional for
modern living.
Through Mr.Chen's example,I came to understand that new-era craftsmanship

Batteries are getting smaller, lighter and more powerful all the time. This is good
news for industries and buyers of products ranging from electric cars to mobile phones. But
for some applications, the conventional shape and structure of a battery is simply too heavy
and awkward to use.For example, skin instruments that monitor health conditions,
require more close contact.
Since batteries can't bend like skin and tissue, they become unreliable and uncomfortable to
wear.A number of approaches are therefore being taken to produce flexible batteries.
Among the most promising, though, are water-based batteries inspired by the way an
electric eel(鳗鱼)stores its charge,.
A group at the University of Cambridge has used the eel's technique to come up with
"jelly batteries".These are made from materials consisting of water. This makes them both
soft and flexible.Whereas most batteries lose conductivity if the material is bent or
stretched,a jelly battery can be stretched up to one-and-a-half times its length with no
voltage (loss. This means it can be worn more comfortably against the skin and is
more reliable when transplanted into internal organs, like the lung, heart or brain.
The jelly battery works in much the same way that biological processes produce
electricity. They rely on the different concentrations of electrically charged particles
)This creates a difference in electrical potential, producing a tiny voltage.Electric eels
strengthen it by having thousands of muscle cells acting together to produce a voltage
powerful enough to hunt.
Besides wearable and transplantable devices, another potential market for stretchable
batteries is soft robotics. For one thing, stretchy components would be safer to operate
among people than traditional robots. They could also help power other devices, such as
gloves that allow stroke victims to move their hands. All this should provide plenty of ideas
for wearable innovations.

Paul Bloom,a psychologist at Yale University, defines empathy as the act of stepping
into someone's mind to experience their feelings and it's what he takes issue with.
"Experiencing someone else's pain will motivate us to care about and help that person,"he
writes,“However,it leads to some moral dilemmas(困境).”
Bloom tells the story of a 10-year-old girl called Sheri Summers, who has a deadly
disease.Doctors have placed Sheri on a waiting list for a treatment that will potentially
prolong her life.Sadly, this very bright, very brave girl learns she has weeks or months
before that happens. When participants in a study were presented with Sheri's story,
around three-quarters moved her up the list to get her treatment earlier.Yet,doing so
could mean every other child above her on the list would have to wait even longer, many of
whom might be more badly in need of a treatment.
People are much more likely to open their hearts-or wallets-when there is a visible
beneficiary (whose pain could be eased. The charity that campaigns with a single
story of a named, suffering child may win more donations compared with the charity that
only displays statistics describing 1 000 unknown children.
There's nothing wrong with using personal stories to raise awareness of a worthy
cause, but the identifiable victim effect does take billions of dollars away from where it
could do more good for a greater number of people.
The research suggests that we ought to start making a clearer distinction between
empathy and its apparent synonym(同义词):“sympathy'”.To be sympathetic,it is more
about the idea of extending kindness towards others.
Bloom uses the example of an adult comforting a child who is terrified of a small,
barking dog.The adult doesn't need to feel the child's fear to help."There can be sympathy
for the child,a desire to make his or her fear go away, without any shared experience or
empathetic discomfort,"he writes.
32.What does the underlined phrase "takes issue with"in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Disagrees with.
B.Commits to.
C.Takes into account.
D.Is in favor of.
33.Why does Bloom tell the story of Sheri?
A.To arouse the readers'sympathy.
B.To criticize the participants'choice.

The Last Living Monet
Every winter, the head gardener at Claude Monet's garden in the tiny French village
of Giverny sits down to a pile of seed lists for disappointment.Avisard knows he must
grow at least 520,000 plants to recreate these historic grounds. But each year at least 10
seed varieties he selected the previous season will disappear.36 When Monet moved to
Giverny in 1883,nurseries (were covered with Victorian flowers. Many of his
favored varieties have since gone extinct or been completely changed as people prefer both
harder(耐寒的)plants and flowers with ever-increasing blooms.
This season,Avisard is crazy about growing a taller pelargonium,a clumped-flower
cousin to the geranium that Monet famously planted in several red and pink beds in front of
his pink house.“37”Avisard says..“To bring them back would be a resurrection(起
死回生).”
Head gardener since 2016,Avisard now leads a dozen gardeners, twice as many as
Monet enlisted.38 Wetter winters followed by hot,dry summers lead to earlier
crowds of pests. In addition, the management of tourists poses a significant challenge.
39
“It's complicated.”says Avisard,“40”He and Giverny's gardeners seek to
please a man they've never met by creating a space so identifiable that it reminds strangers
of paintings they see hanging in museums the world over.
As seeds disappear, the task only gets harder."We want people to look out like
Monet and see what he saw.

Lucas had always prided himself on being the go-to guy for fixing things.Whether it
was a leaky faucet()or a broken toy,his friends knew he could tackle any problem
that came his way.But today was different-he faced a challenge that made his hands
sweat.
It was Saturday morning, and Lucas had promised his younger sister,Mia,that they
would spend the day working on her science project-a model of the solar system. The
night before, they had gone to the local store, excitedly picking out paints, foam (
balls, and a variety of materials.Mia could hardly contain her eagerness to present the
project at school on Monday, and Lucas was determined to help her make it impressive.
However, disasters struck as they began putting together the model.Lucas had
intended to use a thin piece of wood for the base, but he accidentally dropped it,and the
wood ended up in two pieces. At the sight of the broken base,Lucas felt as if his heart
missed a beat.Mia's face fell, and her enthusiasm faded like a distant star.
“Lucas! What are we going to do?”she exclaimed, her eyes wide with
disappointment."Okay,let's not panic,he replied,trying to keep his voice steady."We
can fix this.Let's just think it through.
Lucas surveyed the mess on the floor. The broken pieces lay scattered()next
to the colorful foam balls they had painted with care. They needed a stable base for the
model, but there was no extra wood on hand.Unfortunately, the store was closed for the
weekend, and there was no way he could ask their parents for help-Mom and Dad were
